not as much loss as youd think with the economy of scale, thats why they ditched the hebrew franks and made their own. they now "make very little to none" (2018) off the hot dogs, they dont really take a loss, and it brings in the membership fees.
@bennyhampton25914 жыл бұрын
That probably isn't true. It is true the former co-founder and CEO had such a policy ,but the key word in all that is "former.". The current CEO has already talked about increasing the price of their hotdogs (as well as the rest of the food court items as well mind you / making other huge changes) in order to help make it more manageable (the loss that is). I work at a costco food court and that is why I know these talks are serious even though the former co-founder said he would "kill him if he lowered the prices of hotdogs" lol. Our manager / staff has already talked in length about this, and how our customers will freak whenever it happens (our customers are basically children at Costco). I don't plan to be working at Costco much longer (its been a good job though). That said, people don't realize those food court prices hurt the food court hourly staff more than anyone else (its the hourly food court staff that pay the price for those low costs). No joke, when they evaluate the departments the food court always comes in at a huge loss (especially when compared to the other departments that have huge profits), but point is, the food court staff is the staff that pays for these losses. I can't tell you how many times a boss / manager at Costco would point out that my department didn't make any money that day and as such, I need to close down the store faster in order to help cut the loss (never-mind I almost always closed alone even though its a two person job, but need to help mitigate the loss from the food court so they understaff what is needed for operations / closing almost every day with the exception of weekends). Pretty crazy imo, but I don't have a problem with Costco keeping their food court cost down , but they need to get their stuff together if they are just going to blame the hourly staff for things they have no control over. Just to be clear, I do enjoy working for Costco for the most part. It has its pros / cons like any other job, but I have never wanted to punch a manager as much as when my Costco managers give me talks (an hourly employee with no power / control mind you over anything other than making hotdogs / pizza lol) about how my department was the only one that not only didn't make money , but lost money and I need to figure out a way to close and get off the clock as fast as possible to help mitigate the loss of our department. They not only use that method of more positive / motivational, but they go negative too and they will say that if the department keeps losing money then they will have to cut hours or let people go. Its crazy to me that they would take this approach because it really is such a good company in so many ways. They just have really odd managers / people in power honestly, one of the most strange places I have worked for with regard to its management style. That said, it could very well just be my particular location (I work at a store that is almost always the most profitable Costco in the state I live in), so its very possible that my location is just different, who knows. Point is, low food cost hurt the food court staff most from my experiences with costco.

The sad thing is, Costco used to have excellent bratwurst for $1.50 with a drink, and they blew the hotdogs away.

Research it, Costco rings are basically the highest quality particularly for the price. I got a 7500$ ring there that was appraised next week for 22k. And insured 😂 Costco doesn’t make money on the goods they sell barely they make it on the membership fee. There’s a good doc on YT about it.
@cameronmayes36484 жыл бұрын
Accurate I'll gladly pay a high membership fee if it means everything else is cheap asf
@hollyh79244 жыл бұрын
@ShariSez1 Yes I have that card. I do use it at Costco but I always forget to buy gas there. Gas is pretty inexpensive in my area anyways so it probably is a much better deal for those in other parts of the US. But yeah it’s nice to get that gift card to spend, in fact I need to spend mine before December 👍
@hollyh79244 жыл бұрын
@@cameronmayes3648 It’s really not that high though IMO, like 50-60$? You can get Executive for 100? I may be a bit off but yeah the membership fee cost to the savings or even just the sizes of the products and quality, make it worth much more.
