This is such an important lesson to remember. It's all about balance. I've seen people profess respect for all and denounce bullies only to become the bully themselves when they come across someone who doesn't hold their exact believes. We all need to be careful not to become the monster ourselves.

I found the Cobra Kai philosophy helps balance me out as a natural Miyagi type of person. Helped me deal with an unpleasant neighbour, and the part of me that takes action when needed in heated situations. Without that it's like a fire inside me has been extinguished. So some of this energy is extremely helpful. But then when you look at Hawk and how he went from being boosted to bully....you see how it all comes back to balance of course. On the other hand being too passive is stagnation and even death. Like something rotting from water. Water rots as much as fire burns.

"Lesson Not Just Karate Only. Lesson For Whole Life! Whole Life Have A Balance" ~Mr. Miyagi I live by this quote. I naturally had a lot of Miyagi Do. When I was a kid back in the 80s I was a bit shy, passive, chill. And because of this, I let people take advantage of me and said yes when I really wanted to say no. My life didn't really get good until I put a little Cobra Kai in the mix. Now I can be chill if needed or I can be a total bad ass if needed ;) Great video. I enjoy your channel a lot.

Cobra Kai.....NEVER DIES!!!
@doloinc Жыл бұрын
The irony is that the whole reason Cobra Kai even came to fruition was based off the assessment that Daniel was and always has been the real bully. Going back to the previous 3 films and the series, you quickly see that Daniel has always been a very entitled, passive aggressive individual, even with the teachings of Miyagi. Daniel has never embodied the philosophy of his sensei and always resorts to his bullying behavior, as seen in season one when he tried to shut Cobra Kai down and block them from the tournament and continued in almost every episode of the series. Johnny deserved the redemption he received in the series and Daniel deserved to be exposed as the narcissistic bully he really is.

This show is one of my favorites! I love the themes it explores and the layers each character has in there personality. It does a real good job at examining life in general through both dojos. I love the video, but I disagree with you saying that striking hard only means been aggressive and that softness (a Miyagi-Do thing) overpowers it, as Kreese said in season 2, fighting hard also means fighting smart; meaning that striking hard does means giving all you got but what both Miguel and Johnny did (in asking sam on a date and Johnny on the committee) is not "softness" is fighting smart giving everything they got (which is part of the Cobra Kai philosophy).

Cobra Kai is also a video game as well. From watch Karate Kid films except one with Jackie Chan, I never could figure out Philly behind Cobra Kai as came across from as being aggressive. The video examples topic well, passive can equally bad as let life opportunity slip past. I quickly figured out life is unfair up to us to make it fair. Thinking all things could be doing if I didn't have social anxiety. I agree balance is important sometimes you have choose your battles but there is always Stoic notion of virtue of courage. From what I see, this is a bit of an Americanized way of thinking presented in the series. It is not “wrong”, but having been training full contact karate myself in Japan (still a weakling:), we often hear teachers saying that karate is reading your opponent move and then counterattacking. Of course, you want your counterattack to be be faster then your opponent’s and using this little moment (ma 間) performing a surprise technique (Ichigeki resulting with KO) that knockouts the other side is also the ideal. But, read the opponent carefully. I liked your interpretation of the series in the framework of Daoism, although it’s a Chinese concept, not Japanese as we know. But needless to say that you are very well aware of this:)

American pop culture conflates aggression with assertiveness ("you are either a wimp or an asshole") Aggression (physical, career or social), if it doesn't result in a jail cell, results in isolation or an entourage of toadies. Never a friend you can never drop your guard around, or be foolish, ashamed or show hurt. All your fun must come at the expense of another. I was surrounded by alphas (male and female)when I was coming of age, I felt ashamed for not being like them. In hindsight I realize they were ( and are) narcissists or high in narcissist traits, everything they do is out of fear and shame, everything is about power. Mercy, but don't let them get an "in". Yeah, and that balance isn't always 50-50. It really depends on the situation. I'd say even in a physical fight, you don't always have to strike first, and most certainly you don't have to strike hard because then you will be too slow therefore more vulnarable. Also this whole "tough guy" attitude assumes life fundamentally hates you therefore a victim mentality wich is not ideal. Be tough to show bullies that they're mindset is toxic... On the inside it's always good to keep an objective non judgmental view of the situation.

I think Cobra Kai gets shaded too darkly for the sake of telling a story. It’s a narrative on our culture today that being a confident, assertive person (particularly if ur a male) is a “bad” thing. Epinephrine & norepinephrine are designed to put us in action to move forward or away from something, not to remain stationary. I think the cobra Kai philosophy really embodies that. Our brain rewards this with dopamine with each time you take action rather than sit and wonder what should be done. While Miyagi-Do is autocast as the superior way - everybody is great & should be accepted. Life should be fair, but it’s not. If you go through it with that idea you will be weak and others who are willing to strike first strike hard and show no mercy will surpass you in so many ways. It only takes common sense to know the times when you should show mercy, or not strike at all but there is no time when you should not give it your all in whatever task that you are set to doing.
