Noelia. Secret. Daniela. Alaishri. Four baby girls, born in 2005 into precarious circumstances in four different continents. Secret was born right after the civil war in Liberia. Noelia was born to an impoverished indigenous family in Bolivia. Alaishri came to this world in the middle of a tribal conflict in India, and Daniela, the daughter of a Congolese undocumented immigrant, was born on the floor of a flat in Sweden.
We followed them over the first year of their lives and then returned to find them again ten years later. In telling their stories, we also tell the stories of their countries. What has changed? How much of our destinies are determined by birth?

Seeing that girl have to walk back home TWO HOURS after giving birth was heartbreaking. I couldn’t imagine having to do that after having my first baby; I could barely stand, let alone walk, the first few hours. She looked like she was in so much pain.

70 Euros for a year of school? I hope the production team gave Secret's family the money to send her back to school. She should get something out of this. I look at my own daughter and think, what if she'd been born in such difficult circumstances? What if it were my daughter missing out on education? It's breaks my heart.

No they don't that is the sick part of this.. they will pay tens of thousands to make this documentary with travel, staff pay, hotels, rentals, video equipment that is very expensive... they exploit the lives of these families to give people a view of their lives and they have the balls to talk about how easily preventable the death of the baby in the beginning, they have the balls to watch as a all A & a very Bs student is loosing a future over $70 a year the cost of 1 night in a crap motel in a western country and a tiny fraction of what they paid to watch their lives all these years 💔 it is WRONG

I really wish my parents would've had me watch a documentary like this when I was a child. I was sheltered and very much took for granted my education. I thought school was something that all of us kids were supposed to hate. But it's the key to getting a good job or helping to prepare you to start tour own business. It's a key to staying out of poverty. I would often zone out during class or laugh with classmates during lectures. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self how very valuable getting an education is and how it's important to pay attention.

The education system that we currently have was designed by our corporate overlords to create uniformity and mindless submission to the cult of authority. Those who have gone furthest in its ranks have proven themselves to be the most moldable to the form and the most willing to sacrifice their youth and vitality to this sticks and carrrots/ hamster wheel master's systems of rewards and punishments. Congratulations to the well-trained herds of Lemmings that have been put through this " System" and have become, as Pink Floyd so famously said, " Another brick in the Walll." I only hope that some day, you can ....and will, still be " allowed" the " privilege?" to " retire?".. Or top be " put out to pasture," and at that time, you are still able to live long enough to " enjoy" the " free time" the powers that should not be MAY STILL some day, " allow" you to have. Yes.. IF you were a good little " student\ minion" , then you may..if you live long enough, be granted a brief season with a semblance of "freedom" ... But only when your have paid enough taxes to their fiat fake monetary Ponzi schemes. When you are old enough, and tired enough, and broken down enough, to just quietly accept your fate, and when you are well past the the age to rebel, And when you are too exhausted and too broken spirited to challenge the status quo..... Then, and only then, .may your controllers ALLOW you to actually have enough free time to just sit quietly and deeply THINK about this broken system..and start to legitimately and wisely question your role, your place, in. it. .And only then, when you are no longer a threat to them.. Only THEN.when it is too late.. Will you be allowed d to regret.. But by then, of course, it will useless. But at least you can die with: " nice things".

If people living in poverty were to become naturally sterile after one child, they would value that one child more, would invest in that child more, educate that child, and would have a chance at escaping poverty. But people in poverty rarely stop after one child, so the poverty gets worse and worse for their kids, grandkids, etc.
@Madi-.-

@Panamenya you have to understand that many in poverty within these countries don't have access or even the knowledge of birth control. Plus laws are different there as well. So if a woman is married and her husband wants intimacy or even another child, the wife may have no choice. Its not always a simple situation and having a closed mind is pretty ignorant.

The family from Bolivia was a wonderful family! So hardworking. The father in the family must be intelligent, he manages to create something out of almost nothing. The contrast to the woman who is unable to support a child is great. She chooses to go through 5 births with five different men in 10 years! Unfortunately, poverty is maintained there. People must be able to afford to give their children a future before they give birth to a child.

Having been born & raised in this part of the world, many westerners don’t quite understand why many women in third world countries have many kids, child mortality is very high, for every 4 kids there’s a possibility of loosing 1,2 or all sometimes, so it’s sad for me to put it this way “LIFE IS A GUMBLE”

. Not call people are intelligent as yourself. There is a difference in IQ according to heredity and diet. It is hottly debated..many have tried to disprove it..the facts remain. It is just true.

@@skinnyzebra8626 Infant mortality has gone way down in the last 50 years. In fact, the overall death rates for even the most impoverished nations are very similar to first world countries (compare the death rates of the Philippines and Switzerland -- Switzerland is slightly higher, actually, /1000). There is simply no excuse for procreating so irresponsibly in these times with vaccines, antibiotics, hygiene, etc. Also, if parents are stretched too thin, they can't give each child the attention or care they deserve or need, which would actually put each kid in more danger of neglect, injury, or disease. Poverty deepens and worsens with each additional kid added to an already poverty-stricken family. The most humane solution for most of the world's problems is to prevent human pregnancies as much as possible, to reduce the number of human births in every country. There are way too many people, and even worse is that there are way too many people being born, too quickly. This needs to stop.

We don't know how privileged we're living abroad and having our babies in better heath care systems and our kids also get to have child tax credits added to their names and go to school for free without paying fees.

And here in the west people mourn about their pimples and tiny little things. Heads off to these women baring it all because they dont have options. 😢 I wish world becomes a better place just to breath freely. Broke me into pieces bring a mother myself especially the first brave woman loosing her daughter. I have a son he's a blessing but yes girls are the biggest blessing and nothing can replace their presence.

Just wait until something really bad happens.. Like war coming to your nation..or a total economic6 collapse like in Venezuela..you will be amazed at how powerful your rage and vigor to fight to survive will be..and how free from fear you will feel a you face it. .the problem is the anticipation.

Secrets mother....as much respect as I have for her, her blaming her having so many kids on their fathers is ridiculous! After the first 3 fathers left she could have tried to prevent pregnancy a little harder because Ultimately she's the one left to take care of the children and she's already learned it the hard way.💜

There is a common thread throughout this video and that is that poverty stricken people have children they cannot afford. The biased producers give two examples where everything worked out fine but this is far from the norm.

Where does it start, where does it end. Its a never ending cycle. Btw. Even if they go to school, statistically, they end up the same as their parents. Only a very miniscule number actually has an progression.

Even on out worst day. We still don't realise how good we have it, compared to these people. They really need to hand out birth control free. Secret is a beautiful young girl. I hope she can get an education. I pray someone from the production company paid for it. It was quite cheap. She deserves something out of this.
