I think the chickens would be a lot less stressed about their new quarters if they had a floor of sorts under their roosts instead of wire mesh. Firstly because chickens detest an up-draught when roosting, and also, watch how the two who did get down are carefully picking their way across a beam rather than set foot on the mesh. Dropping eggs from where they are sitting also points to stress or a reluctance to jump down onto the mesh to go find a nest
@susanhalling10748 ай бұрын
Hi there I was thinking about your concerns of the coop . A few suggestions . The birds are too heavy to jump onto that big open chain link wire floor . I suggest you go with a smaller wire weave so they can fly off the roost and land comfortably . For now lay some wood panels down on your wire floor . Some chicken breeders will make wooden slat floors . A 1”x2” slat set up . If you have any mink , weasel or martins in your woods they will climb in thru that open chain link too and kill your chickens . You Might try during this cold laying flat wood paneling for now so thier feet don’t get to cold

Here in the US, there are a lot of people who have children that have outgrown their trampoline. To make good use of it, they turn the trampoline upside down with netting around the sides and let the chickens “free range” underneath the trampoline. It moves easily across the yard and gives shelter from the rain and hot sun.

We had a large trampoline when I was growing up. Every day was spent doing back flips, forward flips, games and just passing the time on the trampoline while the weather was good. It was one of the best parts of our childhood and enhanced our athletic prowess across a number of disciplines.

I think having a mobile hen house is an excellent idea, but I do think you must look at this as a prototype, an idea that you can improve. Maybe you can find an old used trailer base for an affordable price? The wheels should be on the outside, not where the hens can get caught in the spokes. The possibilities to move it will be even greater if you have some sort of brakes on the wheels to deal with slopes. As some one else commented, the chickens do need a solid floor - which would probably make it easier for them to find the small trap door. The eggs are gold in your diet, so worth improving the chicken house. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us! Fun for us, hard work for you!

Pro tip: buy a battery powered light to put inside the chicken tractor. We use LED string lights that are powered by 3 rechargeable AA batteries. It has a timer and goes on the same time daily and then turns off after 3 hours.....have it turn on 1 hour before you want them to roost at night....the light will lure them inside the coop. Add a ramp up to the small door. I couldn't see what you have exactly. After a week, they will be used to going into the coop without the light on and you can remove it. We use this method when training 2-month-old chicks to use the new coop. Do you have many hawks there? We have too many to even use the mobile electric fencing....Hawk flew over twice today while I was outside with them....

Within a couple of days the chickens figure out the new house I’ve had only problems with the electric net keeping them in but not them getting used to their house.
