This how-to video explains plaster patching sand finishes.
If you use less water, less sand will come to the surface.
If you have or add more water to your sponge stucco float, the extra water will bring more sand to the surface, providing a sandier finish. Now you know.

As always free information that is worth paying for. I did foundation repairs around a house that is under contract. The inspector said there were structural cracks etc. Actually it was the masonry coat over the block about 6-8 inches from the ground that over time stopped adhering to the waterproofing tar so I removed it, prepped it and did my best Kirk impersonation and redid it all and primed and painted it. I also took pictures before, during and after and kept pieces of the skim coat to show it was a shallow failure and not what he freaked out the buyer by stating in his report. It looks exactly like it never happened now. THANK YOU for your generosity in sharing you talent and trade!

Good Evening Clint price, thank you, but you deserve the glory.🥂 I did do a video where I show troweling on 6 inches all the way around the entire house on top of a severely beaten up foundation. Type it how to plaster a foundation 6 inches thick to view it. I had to use Eisenwall as when cured even with just sand the PSI strength was 5,800. Concrete is 3,000 to 3,500 psi and it has rocks. Just like you say Kirk and Jason, the aggregate can be easily scraped when its dry to make it smoother. I prefer when I do patches for sign companies to make my patches a little extra rough then scrape them when they are showing dark because of heavy texture I can just scrape them down a bit and they match perfect.

I patched w 16/20 on a 16/20 wall. Hot day. I waited a bit. Final looked too smooth to me, not much aggregate. Did I wait too long or green sponge too light? Looked alright but I think you’d fire me :) Great videos. Best content on the internet by far 👍

Hey Kirk and Jason. I have a great idea for a video. I patch holes for sign companies. I use rapid set stucco for most of them but they only have one size texture. Could you show how to make a hot mix Diy with sand and cement that will dry in an hour or so with other textures. Just food for thought might be a great video to mix it up a little. Or say just mixes in general. like Lyme mix , sand, cement, calcium chloride. and bonding agent. Like different products you use to get it to dry fast for patchwork. Might get some great views. If you have some special formulations.

Good Evening Mike the Painter, yes, "Rapid Set Stucco," has 16/20 or coarse sand, However, It can be made smooth by steel troweling. A texture change can also be done depending on how soon you apply the texture than trowel it down. 😉 We do have videos that you say you would like to see, however with so many its difficult to tile all that with the keyword will come into play. I will write down your words then do a video on different textures than the most common using, "rapid Set Stucco." Howdy Nelson dude, absolutely you can do this, I did once, and will never make that mistake again, Toooooo time consuming to cover everything. Good Evening Joshua dude, I didn't choose either sand.🤔 I applied a two coat base with normal Felton or Olimpia plastering sand. What I was matching was also a two coat existing smooth stucco finish. I just made the sand that was used for the basecoat work as close as possible to match the existing finish. There are more ways to achieve the same thing, but I don't like to complicate repairs. I do a limited amount of sheet rock/texturing and am working on a 100 year old church interior that has a sand texture wall finish. There are larger grains intermixed with smaller, and the balance of the finish is just like a heavy paint, which it probably is. The larger grains of sand are fairly sparse, showing up here and there. There are trowel marks : fork-like impressions here and there. I don't see any circular trowel marks. Your video, although exterior, is about the closest I have come on KZbin in finding a texture that might match. Luckily, I don't really have to actually "nail it" that much. I am painting wall sections that I have completely skim coated to a smooth finish. So faking it will be good enough. The folks who hired me at the church would be fine with Homax. But I'd like to contribute to the lasting quality of the structure. Where do I find these sand materials? What type of place? I live in rural Iowa. And what "size" sand would you recommend? How much do you add to the mud? Or, at least where is a good starting point? And 20 minute mud? 30? 40? How much time do I need to work the mud where I want it to be, allowing for not getting what I am looking for and having to re-work it? Should I prime the raw smooth plaster before I do the sand finish? Or just prime between the sand finish and the topcoat? A lot to ask here, I know. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I'm humbled by your finesse, quality and knowledge. But at 69, I would not like to swing all that mud for a living.

Sounds like the sand pebbles you are seeing are in the paint over the interior plaster like the painters over the years have picked up sand and rocks on there roller . So to sum things up sounds like the painter should have gotten a new roller when it got dirty 100 years ago that flaw was ok now and day not so

How do I go about fixing the texture? Is there a sand roller I can use with acrylic flat paint to match it? Thanks buddy. Art

Howdy Rolexis dude yes, the wood trim should have been papered prior to the door being set in. Now take the paper or whatever Moister barrier your planning on using and go past the blocks by about 6 inches. to make certain the water doesn't get back onto the wood. Now attach the wire over the wood and allow the wire or stucco netting to go past your membrane about six inches and onto the cinder or cement blocks, now you're ready to plaster the whole wall. Still nor certain, type in how to plaster wood to cinder blocks, a video should appear to show how it's done.
