3 years ago after watching Kirk’s videos I installed the three coat system on my sunroom walls and the results are excellent. Almost all residential and commercial stucco nowadays are two coat ,I believe , with synthetic finish coat. I used all Portland cement based materials on my project. Thanks Kirk your instructions were top notch.

Thank you so much for these videos. I searched your uploads briefly and was unable to find a video explaining the skip trowel technique with regards to various textures. Forgive me if I over looked it. Can you post the link here if you've already done it, please? Otherwise, living in California, everything is stucco. Perhaps you could show some different exterior textures on plywood board, and explain how the articulation of the trowel affects the finish texture, and ideas regarding matching existing skip trowel textures? I'm just a landscaper,, but a friend of mine is/was a stucco guy. He's off the radar. I remember about 15 years ago, I bought a house that looked like it had brick archways, with accent brick, but after I moved in my friend showed me it was stucco. I was so amazed. Now that I know what it is, I see it a lot in 70's CA architecture. My problem is, I'm doing my families home renovation(s), we all have different textures I'm trying to match. The joy's of retirement. ;) Your videos are awesome, thank you! Merry Christmas!

Hi Kirk. What is the mix ratio for the scratch coat ie: cement, sand and water? As I am putting on stone veneer with type s mortar. Then the veneer is going to be 1/2" apart. And the tape on your scratcher is it tuck tape?

I couldn't have done it without watching your videos and studying your techniques endlessly. I would love to share a few pictures of an old stucco repair done by a previous owner of my home and see if you have a suggestion on how I can make it blend more with the existing stucco wall. Where can I share this photo? Thanks, Marina! @@StuccoPlastering

I haven't found any thing on the internet and I don't know if you have done any tile work on old time shower stalls so I figured I would give it a shot and ask you. I need to know the proportions of a tile setting scratch coat. I am installing a shower pan in an old time shower stall. I have match the old installation method which has a maybe 1/2" thick scratch coat of what appears to be a very dark gray colored scratch coat Suggesting a lot of Portland cement.. The tiles appear to be buttered with 1" thick mortar that is whitish gray which seems like it has a lot of lime in it. Would a stucco scratch coat be similar to what would be used in a shower stall and if it is what would be the proportions of the Scratch coat mix?

@StuccoPlastering8 жыл бұрын
Howdy David, I'm in Beautiful California, in regards to this foolish so called code it's not required here, In many parts of the country, this thought process was designed to provide a bit of an expansion joint as the J trim has to be caulked to allow the stucco and the window to move without cracking the stucco. My opinion is somebody stayed up all night and thought of this, quite possibly the same fella who decided to put toxins in our drinking water. I have used thousand of pieces of Stucco J Trimes all for commercial purposes with a bit of a different but similar intention here in California, Sorry, I can't comment on your city and or states codes, many folks have commented in the last 6 years in regards to the well over 700 video's that we should have done this, they will say to use backer rod, (round foam to squeeze between the J Trim and the window) or use caulking, this process will add continuous maintenance to and stucco home. Expansion joints can and is used for commercial large building instead, the topic of this use is another story to detailed for this page. Best wishes with this goofy code. Kirk giordano

Hey friend, does cement have to have sand? Or can you use pure quikrete cement?
@StuccoPlastering5 ай бұрын
Stucco is a mix of Portland cement and sand, while concrete is a mix between Portland cement and rocks. Cement without sand will crack like an egg, it’s like a breakfast cereal without milk. 😉

okay fine but what if you have a 1.5" gap that you need to fill to match the existing siding depth. I can't find anywhere on the internet on how thick the scratch coat CAN be (not should be). Can it be 1" thick?
@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Of course, it can be, I have many videos where we applied 6 inches think. If you go thicker allow it to dry, not think enough, apply more when the first coat no matter how thick has a chance to dry. In fact, I'm doing this in this video, this scratch is an inch thick easily as they used the wrong depth of wood so we had to make up for the proper depth.🤔

Hi Rosa Sanchez, we cover the ground usually with our paper that we use to weather proof the walls, however if you have some cement plaster that has stained bricks or concrete, you can purchase muriatic acid which is also used for swimming pools. Dilute it well and wear gloves and a mask as the fumes are toxic. I would try scraping first. Best wishes, kirk Giordano plastering
