Why do stucco finishes fail or separate? Is it usually a dusty wall to start off with.
Some stucco or plastering contractors, especially the younger fellas, don't realize the key to stucco finish longevity is clean walls with bonding agents applied to those clean walls.
Failing stucco finishes are more common than most folks realize.
The key to avoiding this is the proper prep work before the new stucco finishes or even painting.
Howdy Folks, we show a color coat separating from the stucco wall.
Why does this happen? Any particles, weather dust, moss, or paint must be pressure or power-washed before any bonding agent is applied to the wall surface. I like to call this process micro-scoring.
You use a pressure washer with at least 3,000 psi, plus a turbo tip for washing and scoring the existing paint.
This will ensure an excellent bond.
We removed the loose stucco, re-applied the original or the same texture, and blended it into the existing so no one could tell where the plaster had separated when painted.
I used a bonding agent called "Weld-Creat' by Larson's to adhere to the new heavy finish stucco called La HaHaBra, which was heavy sand called 16/20 to bend or feather in the new stucco finish into the existing one that failed.
The concrete or stucco bonding agent Quikrete also works at all HD and Lows stores.
• Make rough stucco smooth Make smooth heavy textures stucco.
• Stucco color finishing... Integrated cement stucco color finishes.
• Apply a stucco base co... Applying a skip trowel stucco with a cement base coat.

The first time I watched a video of Kirk was an interior ceiling plaster job. I've watched so many videos since that I've learned about the different materials, tools, finishes, sponge floating, and a lot more. I'm a painter by trade, and just a couple of days ago I was asked if I could repair a damaged section of the store front I was going to paint. I think I've watched 80% of your videos. the building I worked on had a bunch of peeling 1-2 sq feet sections.. 18 different sections to be exact. because of your video I was able to do it by myself. You're most welcome. Question: Ever "rub" green concrete walls like after the forms are stripped? I'm from PA and the cement finishers use just sand and cement I think along with a sponge float or a piece of rigid blue foam. It's an extremely thin coat or "un-fat" as you might put it. Just wondered whether this could be something you could put together at some point.

HI Alan, usually the cement wall have a much larger aggregate or rocks for strenth, stucco just needs sand as it usually only up to an inch thick, if the situation presents itself I will video it as I see all sorts of stuff folks do. Best wishes, Kirk Giordano

I'm a painting contractor and have been asked to repair some stucco for customers because they can't find any stucco guys willing to do small jobs right now. So I've given them the full disclosure that I'm not a stucco guy and I don't even know if a separate license is required for that in this state but I plan to do my best and they don't mind being the guinnie pig. It looks like they've got an acrylic stucco that's peeling off in sheets in places. Everywhere else we're going over the stucco with an elastomeric (very stretchy paint) to help fill in the cracks and freshen things up. Thanks for posting and wish me luck! I'll be watching more of your videos I'm sure.

I'm loving it, I have been repairing our stucco wall, and finding out how much there is to plastering, I'm quite enjoying it, and finding out how many people (including Home Depot) don't know much about stucco, I have been studying various videos but there is quite a lot of different videos and many different factors to consider I guess, I wasn't happy with the little overpriced pints of stucco repair they sell at the local hardware, so I went to Home Depot looking to buy a bag of mix thinking it would be more cost efficient, but I can see now the people there don't know much about the various stucco products, so I am looking at your videos:) Thanks sunaj

Hello sunaj, no most folks at the local hardware stores don't know much about stucco, it's a hard and dirty trade but I love it. If you do go to Home Depot, they do sell rapid set same day stucco all you do is add water, don't overmix. Mix, apply to the wall and match the finish. They also sell many other quality cement plastering products but most of these you have to add the sand separately. So Rapid set is the most user friendly. cheers. exactly what I was looking for! I started pressure washing latex paint off my stucco - was wondering how do i blend the parts where the paint DIDNT come off - looks like I gotta re-stucco and texture it.

Wait, when were you at my house filming that? lol, your video exactly describes the problem I'm dealing with on my 1920 house. I';m repainting the entire house and the paint often peels off in large sheets like the one you displayed, and other paint flakes off as easily as shown on the chimney. The underlying problem of lack of paint prep probably occurred in the 1950s based on colors I've revealed. The paint peels are dense with layers of paint and what's underneath is very chalky, and sometimes mildew residue comes off too. A mess. The good news is that when I started the project, I thought my stucco was separating from the lath due to cracks and "looseness" of the top layer. Nope, just a thick layer of paint ready to fall off on its own. Based on evidence that sheets have peeled off before, painters before me probably knew there was a underlying problem but just added another layer of paint instead. Along the way, I do have to make stucco repairs, and especially repairing ill-advised repairs committed by long ago contractors. Like when they restucco'd OVER a galvanized downspout, or used joint compound to fill a hole. This is just one house; I cannot imagine what sins you have uncovered. The project is almost finished and I've learned a lot along the way, and want to provide a huge THANK YOU for all the lessons I've learned by watching your videos. The improved appearance of the house reflects the techniques and knowledge you have shared.

Hi Kirk, love the videos because they are so informative. I have a home with 25 year stucco thats peeling everywhere besides all the cracks. I can sand blast if i wanted but wanted to know if i should sand blast or water blast? and then should i fiberglass wrap after?

Greetings Nerces, in my area it's illegal to sandblast these days. I'd recommend pressure washing with just water anyway, no dust, and if your pressure washer is gas and powerful, that will do the job. I have only wrapped a couple of homes in my time, both were in horrible condition, so, it not recommended. Cheers, Sound Plastering tips from your favorite stucco geeks

Hi Kirk. I enjoyed your video on plastering over existing painted stucco walls with acrylic finish. I have a home that has a standard three coat cement stucco over polystyrene ICF's. Over the years, hairline cracking has appeared at almost every block joint (15" x 48"). Despite several extensive crack repairs and repainting, they always reappear. I'd like to go with an acrylic (Sto) finish over the existing to stop the cracking. Can we use the acrylic directly over the existing with a thorough cleaning and a bonding agent or do we need to first use a base coat (e.g. Primus by Dryvit)? If so, will the Primus adhere as well as the acrylic? Thanks.

Good afternoon Richard, of course, you can. Dry-Vit wrote the book on acrylic stuccos. as they were from Europe about 70 years ago and have been copied by many stucco companies for good reason, they are pure quality with decades of research to back their claims and or products up. This was called La Habra heavy sand finish, you can buy this from plastering yards.

Very helpful video. I have a very similar problem on my house. My questions is what is the best bonding agent? Do I need to let the bonding agent dry before spreading the color coat finish? And same for the final soupy mix you threw on, did you wait for the color coat to dry before applying it?

Greetings Clif, I like Weld Crete by Larson's myself, Its sold at all the professional plastering yards for well over 30 years for a good reason. Thanks, Kirk. I did a 20 sqft stucco patch on the side of the house over by the trash cans. Perfect spot for a rookie. It's a good job, not super-pro, but much better thanks to your videos. When can I paint it? Particulars are: 1/8" of La Habra 16/20, sponge float, over 60 year-old scratch & brown, warm California weather.

Morning Glen, about a week you can paint. For a complete home or wall which is usually about an inch thick I tell folks wait 28 days to paint as this gives the entire home a chance to cure, even the walls that may be in the shade. You're the best Kirk. I feel a lot more capable of recognizing when I'm screwing up after watching your terrific how to videos. I have a couple of areas on one wall of stables where the paint buckled and sagged where irrigation over sprays. I seem to think there was a problem with the mix or more likely-oops, forgot to seal it or let it cure 28 days. The material underneath is powdery to a depth of maybe 1/4"-3/8" so planning on the pressure washer, Weld Crete, and...what, a scratch coat for the deeper areas and the texture coat all around? What say ye? Thanks for the excellent tutorials.
