Awesome video! Thanks Kirk! Man I had an amazing plastering experience last week! I used a thick tarp to roll-mix together 5 parts sand, 1 part clay and 1 part cement. I then applied it using a hawk and a brick-laying trowel (t'was all I had) and then I skipped the part where I'd normally darby it, and I just hard plastic floated it. I was surprised! It turned out great! :)

Haha about your exes lol. I bought some quickcrete base and brown coat, and it was very rough like pea gravel and wouldn't stick to the lath. I'll look for the Greencor, or thought Id just mix some portland cement with sand like 3:1...
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why it would be thick like pea gravel? Try Green Cor super high-yield stucco sold at HD. www.greencore-usa.com/products/super-high-yield-stucco.aspx/ It has much finer sand and tends to adhere excellently. To paper lath or blocks walls. 💃I

Kirk, at it's base elements stucco seems simple, portland, sand, lime, etc ... But when trying to buy it's so difficult because info is limited online. When you say knowledge is what comes over the years you are so right. Now my question: i have an ugly porch foundation where it is going to transition into a wood porch frame. I plan to use metal lath over the wood and transition seam. I have roughly 60sqft to cover. What will be the simplest and cheapest coating system? I plan to level it the best I can and possibly rubber float it.

I love watching your videos. Please keep them coming. question? Do you add lime to your mix and if so how much?
@StuccoPlastering9 жыл бұрын
Howdy Wayne Frazier, most of the cement plasters (Also called stucco in the U.S. and Render in the UK) these day have lime added anyways or what they call a plastic additive, similar for spreadability? Lime makes the cement plaster spread a bit better and add permeability, .bit is it necessary? I buy Lehigh's portland cement plaster as it has common for strength and plastic added spreadability. No lime is needed with plastic cement because it is complete as formulated. FYI, the hydraulic portland plasters that are same day, applications that are so popular in Home Depot and or Lowes even have sand, you just add water. Rapid set, Quikrete, sakrete, makes these same day back to back products. For the BMI, reinforced fiber mesh same day cement products you have to go to sikaflex web site, they sell this material in silos and bags that a fella can mix with their machine. Opps, too much info, got carried away. Best wishes, kirk giordano

it really depends on the consistency of ones mud.. If the mud is right. The work is easy
@StuccoPlastering5 жыл бұрын
Morning Ass Dude, as a rule, we like perfect mud. however rather than send it back whether it's soupy or stiff, an experienced plasterer knows where to apply it. For example, if soupy mud gets to me, I look for an area either in the sun or just paper and apply it in a particular way so that the paper can and will absorb the excess moister. If I'm up scaffold I clench my fist tight that jester indicates to the hod carrier to stiffen it up. Kirk Giordano

Hello Kirk. I enjoy your videos. Just have a question for you. What do you think of new lath technology like (spiderlath)? or fiber re enforced stucco?
@StuccoPlastering9 жыл бұрын
Evening Ernesto Peralta Jr, good question, I like thier thumbnail picture, (a cool looking blue spider spinning a yellow web,) but seriously I don't know enough about this system to be a judge and or jury. The dry-vit system which uses a fiberglass mesh netting I do know, but this is fiber mesh is applied over styrofoam which does not have to have an inch of stucco applied. so again sorry, not enough info to judge. I would need 20 years of use of so called trial and error, to see for myself, I may kick the bucket before then or who knows live an addition 40 years and say damn, I should have tried it :) On fiber reinforced cement plaster, I have been using such products since the late 70' and even now. The fiber reinforced cement plasters today are almost unnoticeable, where in the early 80, when we did two coat systems with a float finish the fibers stuck out everywhere. today they are super small and made so that if floated without a third coat they are usually invisible, They work really well in fact I'm doing a job in two weeks where the product I will be choosing is BMI 690 with fibers as it also has lime and I need a bit of flex mixed with strength as the house is cracked like an egg as it had lots of issues. best wishes, kirk Giordano

What type of mud for scratch coat do you recommend for a kiva lath framing around fireplace.? Thanks so much for your excellent video and for always sharing your knowledge & experience to all!!!
@StuccoPlastering5 жыл бұрын
Morning Ciro, any cement plaster will work, the key is to make it really sticky. This can be achieved by adding half the sand as one would normally. And or by adding some fiberglass mesh into the sticky cement plaster. Fiberglass mesh comes in bags buy one once to many pounds. They are sold at the Plastering Material Yards. I am not referring to rolls of fiberglass mesh! I'd call around first or go to Amazon and type in Fiberglass mesh to add in cement plastering. If your mixed cement plaster is too soupy, it will fall through the mesh wire. If it's too thick, it can smash the metal netting. Copy and paste the link below into your browser to show the mesh I'm referring to. Bringing peace, love, and harmony back into the world of plastering. What kind of staple gun (battery operated, not compressor) can I use to do that job?
@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Hello Kenia, there is no staple gun that shoots the one-inch crown staples invented yet. So my son and I made a video added to such companies such as "Milwaukee," asking them or any tool manufacturing company in the world to produce one. I mentioned not only would I purchase one, and my son and I would show and explain it in a video. I received hundreds of replies suggesting there was such a gun. All were wrong. The question still applies to all makers of battery-operated tools, invent a staple gun for lathing that runs off a battery. My son, Jason, and I will promote it in a video at no charge.🤔

hey Kirk Nathan in Canada, east coast. Love your videos and family business! I want to cover my interior fireplace which already has cement board. I'm considering doing a stucco 100% acrylic base and wondering if I should embed fiber matt for the whole thing, especially the joints? also can I do a foam pad finish on this base or do I need to do a finish coat? don't think the base has aggregate... cheers

Hello, Kirk, I have a pretty bad question for you today. :D Does it actually matter where we start plastering? I tend to start from the bottom and work my way up. I am asking out of idle curiosity.

Good morning on big walls we start from the top and work our way down, on simple or small stuff like this it does not matter, Cheers, kirkk giordano

Howdy Daniel, I recommend you google “Plastering contractors” in your area. This may help you decide. This search may also bring up “yelp” Theirs is a paid subscription, so their reviews may be more biased than Google; however, you can scroll and read through the Yelp reviews. Hopefully, with the help of both reviews apps, you will find the best fit for your needs. If you’re still not sure, ask to view their completed jobs and or repairs and, if possible, speak directly with their past clients. Best wishes, Kirk Giordano Plastering Inc.

Great video as always Kirk! One question- does anyone there use the expanded metal (i.e. Like Clark Dietrich 2.5 SF - looks like a diamond pattern), seems like everyone on the east coast is using that and no one uses the 17-18 ga rolled wire like you use (but everything you do still sticks to that and holds), maybe it's easier to use than the other and you're just more skilled and can use the 17 ga wire, or maybe more on the west coast do it that way? I swear I heard someone mention they only use the 27" sheets of diamond shaped lath for ceilings and rolled ('chicken wire' looking) wire for verticals. Anyways thanks so much for making so many great videos and giving such awesome tips and advice!!

Morning BMW dude, we also use Diamond 3.4 mesh wire or rib wire for ceilings. all the walls require 17 or 18 gauge wire in our state. Kirk Giordano

Howdy my friend, cement stucco or as it's know in some countries cement plaster is applied like interior plaster, the only difference is we don't need a scratcher for interior plastering.💃
