In mid February 2021 an unprecedented Polar Vortex wreaked havoc on a large portion of the United States. Texas was hit exceptionally hard with snow and freezing temperatures that broke records causing state wide power outages. Texas also happened to be the state I was headed for on my return trip cross country to the Southwest from the Southeast. I needed to find a place to hunker down and stay safe to ride this winter event out. That place was Waveland, Mississippi. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by the storms.

Great travelogue. Not everywhere travelers seek shelter is going to be as spectacular as the Mountain West, but I’ve found that the good people of the South don’t think of that “Southern Hospitality” thing as a cliche. They mean it. I’ve almost never found people so welcoming and helpful to travelers. Stay safe and warm. Spring is right around the corner!!!

We're just glad to see you safe and protected from the elements. Whatever your content it's still enjoyable. We experienced a severe ice storm here in Virginia and the power outage lasted 34 hours. My camping equipment was a godsend providing us heat, hot meals and drinks and lights; the portable Jackery also kept our cells charged. Outside of our master bedroom at night the average temperature in the house was 40F but in our master bedroom it remained 60 to 65F as we used the lowest setting on the Mr. Buddy Heater to conserve fuel. I messaged a friend in Houston and his power is back on and the family are all safe. He is also an overland camper and used his gear to keep them safe and warm. We will pray you remain safe throughout your journey and we look forward to your videos. BTW that was a good call on not doing that hike; trusting your gut feeling is always a key in security.

Welcome to MS. I've lived in UT, CO, MT, WY and moved back to my home state for one reason...the people. (while the scenery is very under rated IF you know where to go.) God gave us the wheel to travel. I roll back West every chance I get. Safe travels and when you come back...make it in the Gulf South fall...mid-October to late November. I'm still looking out our window at lingering ice in the woods of central MS. Texas is short on supplies as are we. Stock up ahead.

You make the best of wherever you are! Back in the 90s as a corporate pilot, I flew for the architectural company that started the whole riverboat casino thing. Oddly enough we were flying to Gulfport from the main office in Rapid City SD. I usually stayed in Waveland or Bay St Louis for those trips. Mostly very nice folks but you were ok to be a bit wary. It started that, by law, the casino had to be a riverboat but then it just had to float. The company converted barges into casinos, you couldn’t even tell when you were on the barge or lobby as the whole side was open. Most of those casinos were destroyed by Katrina, some were tossed across that Beach boulevard.

We live just a few miles from where you stayed. You picked as good of a spot to camp as there is around here. My wife and I love to ride our bikes on the pathway just to the east of where you camped. Too bad the weather was so dreary and cold. In my 30+ years on the Mississippi Coast it has only gotten that cold a couple times. Walking the beach at low tide on a clear and mild day is glorious. I was living out west in 1985 when I first passed through Mississippi and thought it an odd place. Two years later I got a good job here, settled down, raised a family, and now have no inclination to move. Like all places there are good sections and bad sections and unfamiliarity breeds caution. Yet you were in a good place. Those lurking gators that gave you pause are surely less dangerous than a bear or a cougar. But if you are not used to the idea of them, it’s hard to feel safe. Still hoping you make it to Big Bend and Guadalupe. Big Bend warrants a long stay…Guadalupe a short stay.

As someone from the Midwest, winter weather just comes with the territory. We just spent the last few weeks with most days being around or below zero (actual temps) with wind chill in the -20 to -50 range. My friends up in Northern Minnesota were dealing with even colder temperatures. So for us seeing people in the south not being able to deal with this type of weather is hard to understand. Getting a foot of snow on the ground in one storm is nothing....sometimes happens multiple times in a week for us, and we roll with it and move on. We live with it for 5-6 months. Hopefully after this, people learn to beef up their homes, cities improve their infrastructure, and the utility companies improve the durability of their power grid to avoid incidents like this. Glad you were able to avoid the bulk of the storm.......the south pretty much took a storm that was really meant for us up here in the north.....it's too bad they really were not prepared for it.

I have only recently looked at how the Sprinter van is set up, 4x4, & diesel, and thinking about it a little, your rig is more privet, and efficient it seems. I use to have a vw 68 camper that was falling apart, and it was fun besides the falling part where I had to keep repairing constantly (I had to do a value tappet adjustment ever 500 miles and the rear axel came apart on the highway, and I had to walk around looking for the bent and damage bolts so I could stick it together and limp home) . One thing I liked was I did not have to go outside to access the interior of the camper. But now I think about that, your setup is a plus because people look in through the windshield at night, and they can’t see you in your rig. I had a guy try to break in one night, I grabbed my Huge Mag lite and Yelled “Get out of here”, scared that guy silly, he ran 40’ , turned apologized, and took off running again. It was pretty funny. Also the back seat storage you have probably beats out the storage of the Sprinter, and Price by a way far amount. I can’t afford a Sprinter anyway, but I was playing the Omaze Lottery game and just looking at what they were offering. Shower and Fridge is a great. I looked back at your Intro video of the rig, and you dressed the interior up vary nice. $ / $ I think you did indeed find the best deal combination for price. Have fun, Hope CA don’t fine you for being tardy on registration, CA DMV is vary mean :).
