I'd lost my verve for painting when BLAM your site appeared like a tidal wave, destroying all the perfectionism, detailed strokes, fatigue and depression that had kept me from just plain enjoying myself. I'm a new woman today because of you! I should be painting rather than binge watching your electrifying vlogs but I can't stop! They fill me with joy + hope. One thousand thank yous for giving so much of yourself, your valuable time and sharing what you know. Pls know it's appreciated and in my case, life-altering. Waving from Toronto, Nina

I second this message! I have up painting and art altogether for several years because I wanted REALISM and I was not content with my finished result and had no idea the process was important. I am now experimenting and actually enjoying the process whether it be realism or not. THANK YOU SANDI !! Also waving from Toronto, Kayla :)

Dear Sandy - you are so refreshing and honest! Wonderful! It is most helpful how you talk about you dreams and fears as you approach a new canvas. It is a difficult process made up of all your efforts, learnings, sufferings and life experience. You have great facial expressions! I still freeze before the blank canvas still and I'm sixty seven! When I was a kid I did a really wonderful painting of a sunset. I showed my father and he said, 'You will never see clouds in real life in those colors. It's not very good!' On the way to school (I was going to nshow my art teacher) I looked at it, had a moment of great doubt, and threw it down a drain! I still hear my father's voice before every piece of art I begin. I am trying to start adult coloring with pencils. I have all the equiptment, but can't start! As you say, art is hard. You give so much encouragement with talking through your process. Thank you! Blessings to you. Kevin - Australia.

Kevin, I’m so sorry you had that terrible experience as a kid- such a bummer. Just remember though - not everyone understands art. My husband is the most supportive person of my art in the world but when I started painting he’d say “well, there’s not a tree there or _____ isn’t there” stuff like that - he didn’t realize that art is more that coping a subject- we are story tellers and we get to “say” whatever we want. So be careful in handing onto aREAL negative vibe with your dad - he may not have meant it in a harsh way - he may just not have understood art. Even if he did mean it in a mean way - throw those feelings tied to that day down the drain and get back to enjoying art - be a storyteller and make kid art that you didn’t get to make as a kid. Life is to short to fill in blanks of what others have said. Get to playing Kevin!!!! 🤗

Another awesome video Sandi!! There is always something that inspires me and some day, when I grow up, I’m going to paint with such abandon too!! #lifegoals #iwanttopaintlikesandi #doozydoggypaintingfun I use 2 oz plastic cups with air tight lids. Amazon has them but they’re super pricey. Jerry’s has great prices on them so I order them from there. I started doing that a couple years ago while I was working on large acrylic painting. I needed custom mixes to use on the big 5’ x 6’ canvas. I knew the painting was going to take months to complete and I needed a very specific palette with consistent colors throughout. The little cups worked like a dream and the paint lasts for months. My acrylic paint mixes are the consistency of heavy cream so I’m not sure how stiffer acrylic mixes would hold up. Oh and...I just placed a big Blick order for Flashe paint!! I’m so excited!! I totally relate too to how you were talking about how your body gives out from painting before your mind does. I do struggle with that myself. I used to paint for long hours a day, barely stopping for food. I now contend with MS and Lupus. My mind is willing...my flesh has a fine sense of humor!! I make plans and sometimes my body just says “no way Jose’ not today” lol. Blessings to ya from Texas. Thanks again sweet girl for sharing yourself with us.

@@sandihester yayyy!! I went back to my orders. The cups I use are Plaid Cubby Ware cups. I misspoke. I found them on the Mr. Art website but there are many other kinds you can choose from on different sites. These are the ones I like. They seal very nicely and hold 2 oz of paint.

Sandi! What a treat to watch you work though this. It’s SO interesting how a painting - once it’s done - can seem like it was “easy” to make, but I don’t think people realize how much thought goes into nearly every decision! Composition! Color! Value! Scale! All at once. I sincerely admire your guts to go for it and paint over or add to the canvas. I’m learning so much. The trick for me now is to put it into my own practice... so much easier said than done. XO, Stacie

"You should have done that, Missy" had me laughing so hard. What I've started doing is if a painting is close to being finished, but it's also getting close to the end of the day, I just put my paintbrush down and come back to it the next day. I do this even if I think it will only take another half hour to finish it. I go home with how I want to tackle the final bit in my head, so I know exactly where I want to begin the next day. When I come back to it, I reevaluate my plan for the final run. Sometimes it changes, sometimes not. We all want to "get a painting finished and move onto the next one", but just taking a breath before the final run always helps my painting, and my, ultimately, my mental health (because fewer stuffed up paintings, y'all!).

PS - I also think it is so neat how you can change your mind and work over spots. I work in watercolor and pen & ink. So I think it is so neat to understand what went into the under layers and changes as the work was modified, like in those art documentaries. Oh and I love that big cat.

Sandi! I love watching your process because I absolutely understand every stage of it, the never wanting to stop, the doing things even though you have noidea if you should, etc. I actually felt a lump in my throat when you changed the greeny rug to blue hahaaa! It was a good change and the whole feel of the painting took a brightening turn (like the sun suddenly coming out from behind cloud). I can't wait to see where it all ends up, because I know you can do it and get there in the end and I know I for one will love it. Watched with my son again and he did his own version of the painting ❤️ See you next week!

You're so good. And you totally know what you're doing. My take thus far is that the rug is a little...contrived or pre-determined? Whereas the tabletop appears more "found" & has a lovely quiet to it. Are you familiar with Mary Feddon's work? You're so good at built up, abstract surfaces. Some expanses of those might be helpful. But it's really very good! & essentially great just as it is. You're so talented! I'm just thinking outloud...

Sandi, do you know the work of primitive painter, Maude Lewis? I get weepy retelling her story. Though she had rheumatoid arthritis, which made her tiny (she was buried in a child's coffin),she painted from the 1950s selling her painted cards door to door often caught in snowstorms. She lived in a one-room, unheated cottage with a brutal husband who wouldn't let her keep the radio on while she painted - due to the expense. But nothing stopped her: she walked 3 miles to the store for her house paint + brushes. In the 60s she was named a Canadian treasure and her tiny cottage was relocated inside the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. I'm so grateful that her art was loved, purchased and covetted. Your joyful art reminds me of her "joi de vivre". Oh oh maybe she's sitting in the corner, smoking her pipe, watching you work LOL....A movie about her life was made in 2017 with Ethan Hawke. No doubt you know all this but here's the trailer link if you don't: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJjUZ6aOe7KpjsU PS Are you planning a RENDR sketchbook review? I'd love that! I'm dying to try them but they're so expensive here in Canada. Thank you for all you do and share!

Yes, I’m very familiar with Maud and have mentioned her and her work several times in my videos. I’m a big fan of her work ❤️! Thank you for your kind words 🥰

To me it's the other way around. Painting from life is the hardest option. I prefer to take a picture, make a quick sketch or just stare at it for long enough to remember, so I can paint at my own pace at home.

WoW that’s a beautiful painting, I love all the details in there. It’s not a hot mess ;) I just love to see all your stages when painting. That big cat on the left is so cute. Totally love your enthousiasm when you like the painting :) have a nice weekend 💋 18:04 “My body can’t keep up with the amount of time I want to paint” Sadly I can totally ageer with you! My mind wants to paint for hours, but my body gives up after 30 min :(

I actually haven’t painted in oils in a while because I developed allergies to them. In this video I’m using Flashe paint (a vinyl paint) and I’ve also been using acrylics - found a new one I’m loving that I’ll be sharing SOON

Another great video and painting. I bought the Flashe paints a few weeks ago and have been trying them, really like them, but I think the way I apply them seem muted, muddy sometimes. Is it the gesso that helps on paper(I painted in sketch book and on various watercolor papers.) just curious how you keep yours so fresh and bright. Keep going, love the content.

Hmmmm, not exactly sure. I don’t gesso my pages very much. Did you go with colors I suggested? I have a video on picking colors for any medium so you won’t get muddied colors. The muted part might be from watering them down too much or not using enough paint - I use a lot of paint in any medium. I also do multiple layers. Hope some of this helps!

@@sandihester I bought the ones in the video yes, I think its a combo, water and I'll try layering more too. I also could be holding back on the paint. Thanks so much. I really do like them, thanks for suggestions, will get to trying that.

@@renajuanita8747 I know it’s hard to use more paint but it really is one of the top things I see people not doing - using enough paint.
