As an artist, when I want to depict evil that’s associated with violence, the color combination of black and red comes to mind first. The green and purple color motif is more representative of the greedy/conniving type of evil, and your explanation of bankers/royalty being associated with these two colors makes so much sense.

I dunno, when I think of black + red I tend to think of that as more of the 'edgy/cool' combination. I mean the first two that came to mind was Dracula and Batman Beyond. Death in Puss in Boots also has that color combo as well. Darth Vader also uses it, which again tends to fit into that general theme.

The lack of orange in villains is actually pretty simple. It was traditionally a very difficult color to get to stand out in color printing. Red and yellow inks were combined to make the browns that would often color buildings and other backdrops. It made it difficult to produce an orange that would stand out against those backdrops.

What I love about Jack Horner is his general vibe is “I’m bad and I love it”. Also another colour twist can be found in The Owl House: White and Gold are seen as holy colours and are often associated with the church, but Emperor Belos wears these colours for most of the series, and he is no holy man, I mean he has fratricide and attempted genocide on his rap sheet

And then when Emperor Belos is found out, he turned into a sickly green colour. Then near the end, when he envelops Papa Titan, the death mold he spreads is a lighter shade of green. Notice the extreme lack of purple due to him never being true royalty.

Meanwhile Darius is decked out in purple due to Coven Heads being treated as essentially royalty in this world. Willow's green hair fits will with her plant vibes, and Eda's red outfit maps to her wild and passionate nature. Lilith's dyed blue hair fits the calm, stable authority figure she tries to be, but the orange of the Clawthorne's natural hair color betrays her true energetic, adventurous nature underneath.

Mat-Pat wonders why orange isn't used more in villainous characters. Meanwhile, some versions of the Joker include an orange shirt or vest under his jacket. The Goblins from Spider-Man throw orange bombs, and the Hobgoblin especially wears an orange outfit compared to the Green Goblin's purple outfit. It's not nearly as often as purple and green, but orange does make an appearance.

If anyone reading doesn't know about it, it's definitely something they ought to look up. It's horrifying, but it's also something to remember when dealing with employers. The radium girls' employers knew the dangers, protected themselves, and yet told these women to use their tongues to "point" the brush tips for painting. And then denied everything when the women started dying and started asking questions. They even spread lies that it was a disease spread by alleged promiscuity among the women to try to discredit them as they were dying. And then, as it proceeded to court, they closed the company in Illinois where it was being litigated, moved to New York, and reopened it, and lied to a whole new batch of victims. They also made every effort to stall out the litigation INTENTIONALLY so that the victims would die before it was ruled on. And the reason this still matters is companies still do all these things today. I've experienced it multiple times myself and it is very hard as an employee to decide which battles for your health and safety to fight and which ones you just have to accept because we live in a country where worrying about health and safety is labeled "communism".

I think there’s another reason you missed. In old books and comic books the printing method made it so the primary colors look sharp and “stick out”. That’s why they colored most superheroes with those colors, and it stuck. With supervillains they wanted colors that caught the eye more than the brown and gray backgrounds, but less than the super heroes, so they chose secondary colors like purple and green

I actually knew about the royal purple thing from an article I read in a gaming magazine when I was a kid about why Nintendo made the GameCube purple. Apparently they chose purple because of its status with royalty and nobility. I think the article even went into detail about how purple dyes used to be hard to come by, thus giving purple its illustrious status.

One of the few Disney characters whose magical powers are based off a lime green but isn't evil is Bruno from Encanto. But, like the person talking about Luz and Belos down there, Bruno was seen as evil by the village, making his color scheme a sensible idea.

Fun fact: in film school I was assigned a filmmaking book called "If it's purple, someone's gonna die." It explained why we associate certain colors and even more so shades of those colors with certain feelings and emotions. Violet Purple and Lime are evil colors

The biggest reason of why orange isn't as prevalent in villain designs is probably due to the fact that there are quite a lot of natural orange things, the sunset, oranges, pumpkins, butterflies, many types of flowers, etc, so it's kinda not as unnatural as the other secondary colours.

To the orange in villains point, something I didn't see addressed in other comments is that it shows up in many of their weapons. Green Goblin and his pumpkin bombs. Joker's joy buzzer is usually either yellow or orange. It's brightness makes the weapon more noticeable against the cooler costume.

They might not have used orange often on villains because it's really close to heroic colors like red and yellow, so it didn't match the evil, dark feelings villains usually were supposed to give off. Plus, it's harder to make orange darker or lighter in tone, so it was harder to use in many different formats like evil fire, poison, and clothing in this case. I could be wrong though 🤷

That makes sense. Orange is much more similar to red and yellow than green is to blue and yellow or purple is to red and blue. (I'm sure the human eye's affinity to green is likely responsible for that disparity. 🤔)

Actually, I believe that another reason why so many comic book villains wore green was because green was the easiest color to print in large bulk. It's why Hulk became the not-so-jolly-green giant.

Correct. He was initially gray but the ink they used for him was becoming too expensive, and because he’s basically just two colors and frequently takes up most of every panel he’s in, they decided to print him in the cheapest colors they had.

I just realized I’m definitely a villain by color. I’ve always avoided primary colors, and stuck to secondary colors. I love green and purple/violet together, that’s my favorite colors, with some sort of blue-green color too, so a mix of the three of them. I wonder if that’s why I always like the villains most 😂 I mean, I already knew I loved “villain colors” but this made me realize it in a different way

In 'Yu-Gi-Oh', Atem (main character and protag) wears purple throughout his whole series (he also has purple eyes.). Something else to note, the (quote on quote) 'villain' of the series, Bakura, wears mostly primary colors (blue and white). However, by the end of the series, Atem wears a purple cape, signifying his evil past is behind him. Just a little thing I noticed.

Im so glad you brought up the HUlk. I love that twist of color on the Hulk. Because from the outside, looking in, Hulk is a monster. If you are just a random citizen and a see a 7 1/2 foot tall, 1,400 lb monster destroying your town, you would 100% think he was the bad guy.

Interesting point about the Hulk: when first conceived, not only was he not green skinned (grey but the printer turned him green), but his ripped pants were not purple (they were blue). The first Hulk in green-with-purple-pants was actually a robot built by the government to fight the real Hulk (still with blue pants), keeping with the "Purple = Evil" idea. At some point, Marvel switched him over to the purple pants and kept them to make the character's look consistent.

Purple is also used to delineate mystery and mysticism, so of course it ends up in the outfits of a bunch of mages. As mentioned by others, orange is a bright,and by definition warm, color, so largely ill suited to ominous usage, although sometimes you do see it as an accent color.

The mystery aspect is most likely due to the formula for creating tyrian purple being secret. It is like how to produce silk used to a top national secret of China.

To go along with the whole off putting colors, just look at Halloween- its most common color palette is LITERALLY orange, purple, and green. While Halloween is all about dressing up as monsters and unnatural beings. Just thought that was interesting 😊

The colour language is so interesting. Blue's "trusting" nature is the reason why so many banks and businesses have blue in their design. Cadbury has that gold and purple going on because Cadbury wants their chocolate to appear luxurious. Humanitarian aids like the red cross have red because its a symbol of health and blood. Its so fascinating how colours influence our emotions!

Approaching this from a design standpoint: purple is one of the darkest colors on the color wheel. It's often used as a "substitute" for black, a way to texture characters in a color that's seeable but still "dark"

As someone who absolutely loves designing characters I noticed something. My main character is an outcast with green skin and purple clothes, hidden behind a blue cloak, a calmimg color hiding the more flashy colors. But most of my villains wear or are black(not the race). A color of mystery and fear as well as sadness or dread. I often use red as a secondary color for my villains, a color of blood and danger, an alarming color. Death from puss in boots actually follows this design. His black cloak portrays an aura of mystery, while his piercing red eyes show his danger.

I'd like to point out another swap of color in the animation world. In the Owl House, the protagonist, Luz Noceda is usually associated with purple. She's depicted as a weirdo who never had friends in the human realm due to how strange she is. Meanwhile the antagonist, Emperor Belos, is associated with yellow/gold. To the Boiling Isles, Belos is a savior. A kind of God, if you will. Very few actually go against his word. He's seen as a wonderful man to everyone besides Luz and her friends/allies, even the sixteen year old that dug his own grave to avoid going back to the Emperor's Coven empty handed looks up to him.

The purple-themed characters in my stories tend to be of a very specific sort: very powerful, in one way or another, amoral, and always motivated by the same thing. They're always out to protect their families (or in one case, avenge them) at ANY cost. At ANY cost. They're not necessarily villains (depends what they need to do to protect their loved ones; they're not shy about becoming villains if they must), but they tend to scare the other characters.

It worked so well, probably because they knew exactly what they were doing and, as you said, leaned into it on purpose. And combine that with having another set of antagonists, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, who were more complex, nuanced, and ultimately not EVIL, just working against Puss. So it balanced out nicely and ended up being really fun to watch

Also in an RGB color wheel Purple and Green are complimentary colors. As an Artist I usually think of Complimentary colors as a way to create or show tension or drama in a way because they so opposing, similarly to Triangles in shape language I suppose. So It might be that too. Also I notice that if its not Purple and Green together its usually Purple and Teal.

While this is a very fun video essay, this is a very English-speaking-centric take on color. For example, purple is associated with mourning in Brazil and Thailand, not royalty. Colors aren't evenly perceived across languages. Take pink - which isn't a primary or secondary color, but rather light red. This is a color that the English speaking world has exported to other languages. The Japanese word for pink is pinku. Before taking the word from the English language, the closest color they had was peach- colored (momoiru). When linguists went around the wolrd eith paint chips to gather color names in all languages, there are some that only have two as few as color words- and even that is controversial if they actually exist at all. I would love to see if this color theory works for non English speaking films, or what villains wear in those movies and stories.

The colors of purple and green also remind me of poison from some games, often saying something of DANGER in gaming at times (for instance, if in a game a room were to be filled with a poison gas, it would usually be shown with a subtle hue change in the air with a purple, green, or rarely a yellow color). I also see green and purple shown in pokemon games for poison types quite often. Something that does make me think of though is... why are stamina potions and the color of stamina in games also green then? is it cause it pops out easier? when and why was green chosen to be the color of stamina in games?

Interestingly enough, there is a brazilian indie comic about a half-human, half-unicorn superhero. His outfit is pink and purple. According to the comic's creator, not many superheroes wear pink, and purple is usually worn by villains. So he made his suit pink and purple to break stereotypes, since the comic is superhero deconstruction.

I think Mat forgets the fact that green is often contextualized as envy too. So of you combine the colors of purple and green with purple representing wealth you can see it as being envious of wealth or being greedy as they already have wealth but they want more.

I'm a designer and color theory is fantastic! Did you know when online shopping for clothes you should print the article of clothing you like? There is a different way our eyes read screens instead of paper. The screen is additive light and expands the color of what you see. Subtractive light works differently and can give you a more clear picture on how your outfit might look. That is if you have a printer with the right CMYK settings!

In "Scooby-Do and the Monster of Mexico", there is a scene where the gang meets Fred's pen pal, and he mentions to Fred that "It doesn't look like he could eat you out of house and home," to which Fred replies, "He has a high metabolism." So, at leat in that movie, Shaggy has a high metabolism. Though I don't know how high it needs to be for Shaggy to stay skin and bone skinny.

I actually learned about this color usage in my high school language class. My teacher made an entire unit about archetypes and colors used and we learned about purple being used for royalty, pride, etc due to its origins of being such a rare dye color.

I'm gonna have to debunk that "Joker's not in a purple suit because he's not the villain" idea, because the color palette for the suit they chose was actually based off of the Adam West Batman show from back in the 1960s, where the suit was much more magenta than purple, and it was actually Batman TAS that could be attributed to starting the more purple color scheme for the Joker rather than magenta. That being said I like everything else here, lol. Purple is my favorite color, and as an artist/character designer, it's fun playing with its different uses in heroes and villains alike. I didn't actually know about the history of green either, so that's a fun little fact.

Its interesting to apply this to a character like Rapunzel who wears purple at the beginning of the film despite being a very positive character from the start. You could interpret that as a symbol of the evil person that she was raised by and the power Mother Gothel has over her for the majority of the film.

I think that's more to fit with her status as the lost princess, purple being not only a royal color, but specifically a big color of the kingdom itself, including being the color of their flag, purple with a yellow sun.

The Hulk is an interesting case to bring up, because, if my memory serves me correctly, the Hulk was originally supposed to be grey. He ended up being green and purple not because of a design choice, but because of a printing error. And it just stuck. That said though, it still certainly works for the reasons MatPat brings up here.

I love this episode. Next month I am teaching my class about character design and how to dress and color the outfits their characters will wear. The class decided to watch Puss in Boots before spring break to get us started on the discussion on characters you like based on personality and one based solely on design. This is going to be a very powerful learning tool to help the students learn that color is not a new thing, how it links back in history, all the way to how we portray it as short hand in visual language. You should talk about the mantis shrimp with your class, hear me out! It’s a colorful, violent little psycho of the sea that can process 12 channels of color. Comparatively to humans who can only process THREE, which are the 3 primary colors. Imagine a color you can’t even imagine because, you physically can’t. Now do that 9 more times, and you’d be on the same level as this shrimp. Like asking a person whose color blind to know what red looks like, it’s impossible. This topic can delve into a deep conversation on the concept of color, the importance of shapes/lines, and how our perception of art is so humanly limited. Imagine how different art, and media in general would be if humans could perceive as many colors as the mantis shrimp? Or, how other creatures, maybe even aliens, would perceive art due to different color perception? It’s a fun topic to talk about amongst artists. 👍

my theory as an artist is that purple is commonly used as a colour to shade things as its a cool toned dark and is fairly uncommon in character design (or used to be ) and just in general its really nice colour to use in cell shading. so to give the idea of a dark character while still keeping them vibrant they used purple ps you did bring up some nice points too so over all 10/10 love your stuff :)

Oddly enough, when talking about colours to evil characters, one of the things that came to mind you didn't mention, was paw patrol. Mayor humdinger and the humdinger family famously wear purple, and as a mayor, he is rich. Similarly sweetie and claw both wear purple, sweetie is a royal pup and claw is a knight (kinda) both positions of power. Even in the new spin off rubble and crew, the antagonistic speedmister, wears purple.
