I wouldn't say that. I must live near him, because I see him at my local grocery store sometimes when I'm there. I never said anything to him until about three months ago. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Like he said, he was actually pursuing a doctorate, but left the program to focus on KZbin. He has a bachelors degree in Chemistry, and according to his 'about me', "worked as a research assistant under Dr. Boyd Goodson studying giant lasers and mega magnets (aka techniques in hyperpolarization NMR spectroscopy.)" He also gave an interview where he revealed he was pursuing his doctorate. I'll just drop the link and the relevant section: Esco Optics: You recently were at the University of Rochester for your PhD. in Optics and decided to take some time off from school. Any insight on why you put the PhD on pause? You may not have known, but Ron Schulmerich (Esco’s Business Development Manager based in Rochester) was ready to take you under his wing and invite you to Thanksgiving dinner and offer you home cooked meals while you were away from Illinois. Drake: Well, I’m still in the system and I could go back, but at the time was doing so much at once. I have my undergrad degree in chemistry but I tacked on so many extra classes. It was a lot and I just took on too much and I wasn’t ready for the adjustment to academia. Rochester is an awesome place, the university is amazing and it’s a great school and I just dove in too quickly and I had some things of my own that I wanted to get to and take a break. Esco Optics: Have you thought about what your goals are for the future? Drake: Right now, I’m at a crossroads, I’m struggling with increasing frustrations with KZbin demonetizing and suspending some of my videos, so I’m not sure as a platform or a medium for me its going to continue. They really don’t like my chemistry videos. I’m going to keep posting videos, but also I have some new outlets that I’m cultivating from past inquires or I could get into the industry with a full time job or get back into academia. So, there are lots of options. I’m working through some decisions, but for now I’m just having fun and enjoying it all. Fun fact, at a messy 2.4 GHz, you could be interfering with the Transponders used in aviation. That is the piece of equipment that send your altitude and position to ATC for their radar, so depending on how close you are to an airport, you could actually completely block your nearest airport's secondary radar. This kind of relates to the FCC he was talking about, but you would also get involved with the FAA and maybe even ATSB if something go's wrong.

The electronics project that sketched me out the most was my massive capacitor bank. That thing was lethal. This was back when you could just go to the photo development section and just ask for their used disposable cameras and they would give them to you. If I remember correctly it was about 800 capacitors running at around 600 volts. When I realized our math was off by more than a factor of 10 was when I vaporized a piece of copper I was using as a fuse. The thing that still concerns me to this day is that it went missing in a move. I really hope no one tried to use this. Because this thing sketches me out as much or more than microwave transformers. Making giant capacitor banks is also very lethal idea that you probably shouldn't do.

They say that during a thunderstorm, a powerful laser can attract lightning (the laser ionizes the air in its path and forms a "way" through which electricity is easier to pass). Unless you're looking at a laser without put in the millions of Watts you're not going to be able to ionize air with it so realistically speaking it's not going to have any effect on lightning because you need conductive particles to direct lightning.
