Subaru Outback gets a makeover; New Subaru Outback 2023 Review & Road Test

The Subaru Outback is a great alternative to a traditional estate car. It comes with some rugged protective bumpers, a roomy interior and the famous Subaru four-wheel drive system as standard.
On the outside, it looks like a cross between an SUV and an estate, with a higher driving position and larger windows to help you see out.
The latest model is bigger and has higher-tech than those before it. With the combination of a raised ride, excellent boxer engine and all-wheel drive, the Outback has achieved six generations and close to 30 years on the road. With the new Outback, Subaru has simplified the button-heavy steering wheel, added USB-C charging, and improved the infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and smarter voice controls. It’s a subtle evolution, but a welcome one.
The Subaru Outback comes with some very supportive seats that have plenty of adjustment and there’s bags of space for taller drivers to get comfortable. Things are just as comfortable in the back, where the Subaru Outback’s wide cabin and raised roof mean there’s enough space for three adults. The boot is more spacious than an Audi A4 Allroad and the Volvo V60 Cross Country, but it’s not quite as roomy as the load-bay in a VW Tiguan. Flip the back seats down using some handy levers in the boot and the Subaru Outback becomes one of the most spacious cars of its size.
The 2023 Subaru Outback comes fully loaded with kit that makes it easy to live with, is absolutely massive inside, and undercuts cars like the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe comfortably on price. If you don’t need seven seats, the Outback is absolutely a worthy alternative.

I have one of these. Fortunately, here in NZ it’s available with the turbo engine out of the WRX which transforms the car and really helps overcome the cvt drawbacks.

Many people are complaining about the CVT. Got an Outback since 1,5 year now and I drove only manual shifting gearboxes until then. I would still prefer manual ones but the CVT is pretty ok. Also in comparison to my wifes Peugeot 5008 with 8-gear- automatic. So far: perfect Car for multiple purposes from shopping with family to hunting under offroad conditions 👍

The Legacy was the AWD estate, the Outback was the same car but with greater ground clearance. This configuration stayed the same for years until the Legacy was dropped for the 4th or maybe 5th generation.

Also if you happen to lock your keys in the car you can open car with a code keypad and open it with your personal number code. And I can’t wait for the new crosstrek to arrive

I love the idea of a big 4 Cylinder, n/a engine with CVT..! Perfect for todays traffic reality, reliable and very long lasting….

you could have mentionned the reclining seat backs in the rear...and the front and side camera (unless you don't get these in britain?)

Front and side cameras are only on the top spec touring. The Field and Touring get the reclining rear seats that are also heated. Not sure about that on the basic model.

Fact check: Warranty is 3 years - not 5 yrs and 60,000 miles. Servicing intervals are 12,000 miles (or I yr whichever is sooner) NOT 9,000 miles. The CVT is something you get used to. You forgot to mention the ground clearance 213 mm. This is a great car but needs a turbo option like it has in other countries. Also, this is now the only car in UK Subaru range (new cars) that isn't a hybrid, which is great news as the Subaru hybrids are 'dog' IMO.
