Amazing videos, enjoying watching this channel immensely. I am curious however why the case halves are not bolted together and bored and honed in an assembled configuration using the case and head hardware of choice. We have found large variences by assembling with dual torque plates for the boring, honing and line honing the mains. We have also found a large variance when setting up ring gap with/without torque plates. Another question, we also vapor hone our case halves and other engine parts and have a heck of a time getting a media out of blind bolt holes.....how do you do this in a time effect fashion. Cheers from Canada

22:38. You should build a jig to centerline the block on your decking / boring machine if it has enough Z. . Write a program to bore the crank main journals with a boring bar so you get both centerline of the block and correct dimension. There is no way you are keeping the centerline based on the inserts on the end caps like you have. If you are interested I can send you a link to a video where this is done.

Maybe a video in the future about what you need to do to safely achieve various power levels? Because of these videos I'm more interested in this engine but it's not so easy to find clear information of what kind of power can be achieved over 100k miles based on stock / piston + rods + closed deck + valve springs etc etc.
@jordanlatta5 жыл бұрын
Good question. There are lots of Subaru forum posts about how much power people have made "reliably" on certain OEM or aftermarket parts, but generally EJ engines are severely limited on boost if they have an open deck or factory pistons/rods. To make more than like 300 hp, it's best to have a closed deck or sleeves to prevent cylinder warping which causes head gasket failure. Also common is ringland failure due to small piston ring gaps that close up and destroy factory pistons, or bent rods from too much boost, of course.

Usually he line-hones them all at the same time to ensure they are aligned, but I guess they looked straight enough on this engine since they were almost all the perfect diameter 🤷♂️

Great vids, this machine fascinates me. Does it withdraw the cutting tool before it moves up out of the bore? ( so that it does not scratch a line on the way out). Do you worry much that it did not seem to be cutting near the top of the cylinder?

When you use the torque plate for the honing process do you re-use that specific head gasket when honing the next block? Along with that, do you use the same set of head bolts for every block you hone as well, or are those new every time?
@mattiasandersson34445 жыл бұрын
Piston to wall clearence depends on what material in the pistons it is 2618 or 4032 and how hard the engine gonna be driven. With 2618 you can have 0.1- 0.14 mm but only half of that with 4032 pistons. With Mahles pistons you can choose what material you want cause they do both.. I´m running 0.12 mm with my 2618 pistons in my 705 bhp / 800 nm cdb ej257 modified with oil squirters . I can see theres a lot of newbies who never been seen a enginebuilder Before and Thinks tou are a god. Matter a fact most of the serious enginebuilders works this way and not only you, but you are obviouly the first enginebuilder they seen in action..

This is a great video. I've heard that you're supposed to bore the cylinders with the case halves bolted together. Is this not true? Or does it only matter when honing?
@jaimecrist72234 жыл бұрын
I am not sure that is even possible, you would bore right through the structural bits. What you are probably thinking of or may have heard about is deck plates, he calls them torque plates in this video - 16:05. They are plates that can be bolted to the case halves, in the same way a cylinder head is, during the honing process. It simulates the "stretch" or the distortion caused by forces applied to the case when the cylinder heads are bolted to it. It does not matter if the cylinder is true when it is on its own, it is ruined if it is distorted when it is all assembled. Blow-by, oil consumption, shorter life, etc. Sunwest Automotive has a great 2 minute video that explains why they use deck plates when they re-manufacture short blocks. I almost bought one of their short blocks, but wanted something a little stronger so I went with IAG. I think the reason it does not matter so much during the boring process is because that is more of a broad stroke when compared to honing. The honing is where things get extremely precise.

'v' and 'w' are pronounced differently in german than english. also depends on the german dialect.
