The Rev's passing hit the band really hard because they all grew up together too. So it wasn't just the band losing their drummer but it was them losing a childhood friend. Very heartbreaking.

The lyric “sleep tight, I’m not afraid” is made more heartwarming (and sad) with the fact that The Rev’s last song “Fiction” has the lyric “all this hurt can finally fade, promise me you’ll never feel afraid”. Btw don’t listen to “Fiction” unless you’re ready to burst into tears. Beautiful but heartbreaking song. The Rev recorded and wrote it 3 days before his death. Due to his heart condition, he knew he didn’t have long to live, and he overdosed to lessen the pain. The song’s lyrics are a goodbye message to the band, telling them to stay strong and keep going without him.

fun fact: the rev (the drummer) has an incurable heart condition (enlarged heart) and was told that he might live until 30. he actually wrote a song called "fiction" 3 days before he passed away, in the lyrics he wrote "promise me you'll never feel afraid" like a message for the rest of the band. and in this song "so far away", they said "sleep tight, i'm not afraid" in respond to the lyrics the rev wrote for them, their way of saying "its okay brother, rest in peace, we promise we're not going to feel afraid". 😭

RIP the Rev, this death hit me so hard back in the day when it happened, great great musician. These guys all grew up together since they were kids, the singer and the rev went to middle school together so you can imagine this death was extremely impactful for the band. One of the best tribute songs and videos out there. Nice reaction, definitely recommend checking out save me like someone else in the comments already mentioned, very special song.

The comments about who the song is about and some of the band's history seems to have been addressed already quite a bit. Regarding the difference in sound: Matt has gotten a few surgeries over the years on his voice (I believe the most recent was 2018). This was recorded and released in 2010. Prior to City of Evil, he decided to work with the late Ron Anderson (vocal coach) to add a more "raspy" sound to his voice which differed in comparison to their first two albums which are much more aggressive.

I have been listening to A7X since I was a teenager (early 2000s) 😳. They are so incredible, so talented and fearless. They write all their own lyrics and produce and write all the music and all the artwork. Their music is so versatile with many different sounds. Buried alive is my absolute favorite.

Its my favorite Band since im 14. I know the whole story, but you can read in the comments. Just best friends since childhood and he was the funniest in the band as well as the musical genius. Really lovely Person too. I cry anytime hardcore style when I see this video. Btw he overdosed on drugs and medicine, but its not clear whether it was purposely or not

The Rev was a God Made many songs for A7X and sadly passed during the making of the nightmare album. He wrote/co-wrote the songs welcome to the family, natural born killer, half of Save me and his song that he fully wrote for the band named Fiction (use to be called “death”) was his last song he did. M shadows changed the title to Fiction and adjusted lyrics because it was basically predicted his death in the song. Sadly you can’t find his version of the song but if you look at lyrics you can obviously tell what he wrote and what M shadows replaced.

It is from the album right after the one that So Far Away is from and described by the band as, "St. James is the light to So Far Away's dark." It's a celebration of Jimmy's life, rather than a song of mourning.

The band has changed their sound and evolved so much since their first album way back in 2001 (still cannot believe they have been around that long). They started off as a heavier Iron Maiden sound, mixed with a lot of harsh style vocals, but as they progressed they dropped those harsher vocals and then started dropping in slower tracks like Dear God on their 2007 self titled album, which was for all intents and purposes a country ballad. This song though was from their 2010 album Nightmare, and was a tribute to their drummer The Rev who died in 2009. The recent song Nobody is also a very different song to a lot of their catalogue, and will be interesting to hear what direction the new album takes as they have not released an album since 2016, and that album was probably one of their least well recieved. It wasn't a bad album, but certainly not on a par with most of their back catalogue.
