A lot of what is called colonialism nowadays is... non-Western people like Western products and Western ideas, and would really quite like some Western business. This offends people who really just want to beat their wives. When you boil it down the decolonial movement is a bunch of academics getting misty eyed over an era where tribes routinely committed genocide against each other in order to stock up on slaves to sell, or sacrifice. These academics don't really care what those of us in "colonized" regions actually want, they just want to force us into their idea of what our societies should be based on a romanticized vision of societies that ultimately couldn't adequately compete against 18th century Europe. And we're all supposed to be suuuper grateful for them fighting against us having human rights, democracy, working agriculture and modern medicine. But you know, fight the power.

@@Thandi123 Years back when I was taking some anthropology courses, it was brought up about a tribe in Papua New Guinea that had a custom of young boys performing fellatio on the grown men under the belief that they needed to do this to become adults. When some anthropologists were there studying their culture and the tribe learned you didn't have to do this to become an adult, it understandably caused a stir in the tribe because a lot of the young ones didn't want to do this tradition but felt they had to. It actually caused some fierce debate in class over whether it was imposing Western values and 'damaging' the tribe's culture vs it's okay for some traditions to die. I still remember classmates defending the tradition because of cultural purity and I was sitting there thinking how they're fine with certain Western traditions dying off for being outdated, but somehow this needed to be preserved because somehow it being non-Western made it more valid.

It’s funny as hell to me. Should’ve slapped Gunn’s name on it, and very much stated it was in its own universe, and a very ridiculous one.
