I'm surprised nobody has ever showcased off the changes before. Despite its flaws, its a really good port and the new additions add a lot to the game.

@@CulganValya But your yapping is the best part! But you could always break them into shorts to drive more traffic you your channel. Not sure how the algorithm works, but your channel deserves more recognition.

A couple notes: The main menu layout in the Saturn is actually identical to the PS1. The Japanese version, anyway. The localizers reorganized the menus A LOT to get things to fit properly. There is a transparency setting in the Saturn version, it's just... really ugly. Either a hardware limitation, or developers just unsure how to work with the hardware, I guess. (Same could be said about most changes. Dang those spell effects are horrid!) Also, the portraits look like they have a lot less color compression, so you can actually make out that pattern background in them. Thanks for recording and sharing this!

Thanks for creating this video for those of us who never knew a Saturn version was ever released with new content. I dunno why they didn't include many of them. Now we won't have the definitive version anymore with the remasters so long as these extras aren't in them.

It truly is the superior, inferior version of the game as someone else in the comments put it. Adding a bunch of extra content, but while suffering from graphical and performance problems. All of the extra content that it added was quite enjoyable and really added some extra meat to the game. It's really disappointing that this content won't be included with the remaster.

@@CulganValya Surely the best solution at this point -- and one a greedy company should advocate -- is including the Saturn content as well as New Game Plus for S2, as DLC content?

I notice the portrait art looks a lot better, not too surprising, as the Saturn did 2d pixel art amazingly well.

There's a few other subtle differences too. The backgrounds on the portraits seem different from the PS1 portrait backgrounds. The game is slightly darker and less colourful compared to the PS1 version. You'll notice it at the HQ while the music is playing. The water, the land, the boat are all darker. The minimap is wider on the Saturn. The minimap icons are bigger on the Saturn, they're also blue, while they're white on the PS1. And the water on the map is coloured in blue as well. The fog in the castle when you're going to fight the zombie dragon has a greenish tint to it on the Saturn.

The "hit cat" option is likely not a real "hit" but just a typical "scold" option that many pet sims have.

Thank you so much for this!! I've been waiting for years for somebody to make this. Keep up the great content, it's always a pleasure when you post Suiko stuff :) A couple of thoughts: - I think the rune animations look even worse cause of the emulator you were using... - The reason for the difference in music is: (a bit simplified) those songs are being actually played as a sort of MIDI through the game's synths, not prerecorded like all the other songs

@@maldivirdragonwitch Thank you. I'll try to keep it up! I'm not sure what video I'll make next. I also own the Saturn version physically and have played it on original hardware before. Sadly it's not an emulation issue, the rune animations unfortunately just suck on the Saturn. Ahh, I see. Interesting note about the music. I think I still prefer the Saturn versions of those two songs over the PS1 versions.

I did make a video of a full run of the arena that had translated captions for everything said a while back but there's two possible prizes for every round. 1. Crimson Cape or Celadon Urn 2. Power Gloves or Rage Rune 3. Prosperity Rune or Master Robe 4. Double-beat Rune or Horned Helmet 5. Fortune Rune or Windspun Armor 6. Darkness Rune or Silver Armor Which also means the Saturn version has infinite Double-beat runes compared to the Playstation versions single one and fixes the availability of Celadon Urns which are cut off as soon as you leave Gregminster on PS1. And did you mention that some of the stars have new dialogue in the castle reacting to events?

I had no idea Double-beat Runes could drop. I've run the arena several times and have only gotten the Horned Helmet drop. I'll have to run it a few more times to try and get it. That rune will be a godsend for certain characters. Thanks for letting me know!

Most changes seems to be made for accommodate the console limitations, but I would love to have the arena, extra runes and Gremio scene.

Now the world knows! The Saturn had some fun additions, the extra minigames (except the tamagotchi thing) and the extra events are great. As unlikely as it may be, maybe if we keep pressing them about the Saturn content they might consider it as dlc.

I was actually just in Japan, and managed to snag the Sega Saturn version of Suikoden from Super Potato in Osaka! I'm so excited to finally play this all firsthand! Hopefully, though, there will be mods for the PC version of the Remastered versions that work all of these in for everyone to enjoy.

That's awesome! Hope you enjoyed your trip. Did you pick up anything else while you were there? I've had my Saturn copy for about 20 years. The additional content is a lot of fun, but the loading times really bogs down the experience.

I think I read somewhere that saturn development was more difficult so I think optimization resulted in these differences and they probably added in content to boost sales numbers that may have been poor on ps1...

I'm not certain, but I think the Gensopedia might've had some of them, but it seems to be locked the last few days. Aside from that, I don't recall seeing them anywhere.

Huh, so we didn't actually missed too much. I felt like those added contents are just distraction to how badly optimized the game was in Sega Saturn. I mean, 7s loading time every area change is absurd. The pirate kidnapping event is kinda iffy anyway, you might think it made recruiting them more telegraphed or that you no longer need to bring Tai Ho and Yamkoo to fight them but for me it felt like an unecessary event. Not to mention Valeria and Lorelai being one of the girl that can get kidnapped? Really? 😂

The arena for sure would've been a fantastic addition to the remake. The extra events would've been nice too. The minigame would've made a great inclusion if each npc had the option of playing the PS1 minigames or the Saturn minigames.

@@CulganValya man you gotta play sotn its one of the best games of all time ! But yeah the Saturn version got a few more levels to explore and a new playable character but its performance on the console was bad konami sure liked the Saturn back in the day tho !

@@CulganValya, if you're not a fan of the Metroidvania genre, I suggest listening to the SotN soundtrack first if you never had. It will hook you just enough to want to check the game out. That's how it happened for me and now I'm a huge fan. :D

extra stages [ 2?] . not like its big loss . that extra content feeled more like in beta state and extra boss had cheap animation , unfinished and rushed . i rember seeing video back in day

Her sprite and weapon are the same. The Saturn portraits, sprites and weapons are just a little less jagged. You see slightly more detail.

As far as I know, only the Sindar Ruins in Sajah Village, and I also saw a Solitude rune, which works as the opposite of the Friendship rune. I don't know if there is more.

There is. I have a video uploaded about it. Suikoden 2 had a secret endgame dungeon and NG+ mode that were unfinished and cut from the final release. There was also a a bath set item and Solitude Rune that you could equip to your weapon that massively increased your attack for every character less in your party. There was also a Chimera enemy in Tenzan Pass that would've dropped Cyclone Runes. All were cut from the final release, but are still in the games files.

It does. The Saturn soundtrack as a whole has a much better sound to it. There's pros and cons to both versions. The PS1 version has better graphical quality, better animations and better performance, but the Saturn version has more content and a higher quality soundtrack.
