I've done some reading about baby sulcata care and one thing I read was to avoid too much humidity. You say you've raised literally thousands, so you do care some credibility with you, I'm just wondering why I've heard to avoid too much humidity if the babies (which I have one) need it? Thank you for all your wisdom you've bestowed upon us too.

The argument against humidity is that they can develop respiratory infections in high humidity but that's only the case if temperatures drop too low. Above 80 degrees it's not possible to develop a respiratory infection. The other misinformation used against humidity is that Sulcatas are a Desert species and don't require humidity. That's false and they are actually a grassland species. They hatch underground in the rainy season and humidity levels are quite high. Underground where they spend the vast majority of their time in the wild humidity stays consistently between 60-80%. Humidity has zero negative effects as long as temperature levels are where they are supposed to be and it has numerous benefits including staying hydrated, healthy shell growth and bone development, along with helping them to properly digest their food. Humidity is especially important in captivity as hatchlings since their heat lamps dehydrate them at a much faster rate than what would occur in the wild. I've never seen an unhealthy hatchling that lived in high humid conditions and was soaked daily. Dehydration is by far and away the #1 killer of Sulcatas in captivity. Humidity goes a long way in preventing that.

I have a hatchling that hatched too early one week before the rest of them. His amniotic sac is huge and has not absorbed in yet. It was dry and I tried moistening it with water to help it out...any suggestions?
@azsulcata
@azsulcata 5 жыл бұрын
Keep it in the incubator on a wet paper towel. Check on it a couple times a day to make sure the towel doesn't dry out and then hope for the best.

Okay will do and thank you. PS thanks for the education on the vermiculite I noticed it sticking to the sac so I cleaned it off and put them in a empty tray with wet paper towel too.

Any still air incubator will work. If it has a fan you'll need to turn that off or get rid of it.

Dont feed them just grass some will eat some rather not have it and they will starve i have a baby for 3 months never once ate it make sure they will eat it then you might be good i would give them somthing new every few days

A Sulcatas natural diet is grass and weeds. Having raised literally thousands without any starving or dieing I'm going to have to disagree with you. The key is not teaching them bad habits. If grass is all they know then grass is what they will eat. If they are offered lettuce or other veggies which is essentially junk food to tortoises then that's all they will eat until properly weaned off.

@@azsulcata it eats many clovers they are really simular to grass and still will ignore it same with hay it never tried it so thats probably why it doesn't care but I've been slowing down i did a mistake on feeding it more fruits then it is supposed to have so i haven't been giving it any i keep it eating clovers and lettce and when it gets older move over to other things not really fruit like cactus mulberrys and the leaves hope grass those should be good later on but lettce and clovers should be good i way rather give more then 1 food it feels wrong but im keeping her down on the lettce a little but i dont think its that bad you might be right because i was confused why it never ate grass i looked up and it just say some like it some dont eat it and ya some will have to because they kinda have nothing else they will eat the mulch but then some will eat it when they get older maybe because it is long and they are scared it will get stuck they have great throats maybe doesint like the grass i have so many things

@@Hagbok Be careful with clover, it is toxic to them if it's part of their regular diet. Various weeds and grasses gives them more than enough variety but it's not always possible depending on where you live and what's growing. I don't recommend hay for young tortoises, it's too hard for them to eat and digest.
@Hagbok
@Hagbok 3 жыл бұрын
@@azsulcata it doesn't like hay and it picks certain clovers and it only picks 5 a day i give it romaine lettuce some clovers are bad?
@azsulcata
@azsulcata 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hagbok Romaine lettuce is just essentially empty calories, it's not getting much nourishment from it. If you're going to feed lettuce at least give it Spring Mix lettuce which offers a variety of healthier more nutritious lettuces. I would personally avoid the clover altogether.
