My absolute favorite place to fish is below spillways. The fall causes the water to oxygenate which draws bait fish and fish. Very enjoyable video and plenty of big fish. Thanks for sharing👍👍

@@BackroadsAngling have you been using the same rod and reel combo since you started on youtube here, im looking to buy a spinning set up and this seems like great price especially if it will last and be good quality
@BackroadsAngling5 ай бұрын
@@jnost161 I swapped out my reel after 4 yrs. I had a kastking eagle and now I have a kastking zephyr. The eagle spinning reel drag still works but it stopped making noise when the line was going out. I beat the heck out of it though. I would recommend kastking reels for their price and good durability. The ugly sticks reliability goes without saying. Does it have as good of feel as a high end rod - no, but for $40 you won't find a better rod.

I remember one time there my wife and I caught 3 flats back to back and 2 of them were in the 20-30lb range. The small one was about 10-12lb. Fun fish and they are strong, all released. I know the locals there love to catch catfish so I hope those people get a chance to hook into the ones we let go!

Sounds like an awesome day! I had a similar experience a few years ago. It was actually one of the first flathead videos I put up on my channel. I caught a 25 lb and then casted back in and caught a giant. It was too big for my scale but it's still the biggest fish I've ever caught. Catch and release for the bigger ones is always appreciated - thank you!

Low expectations? Every time I see that dam, those concrete pillars and that brick building, I know I am going to see leviathan sized fish. I finally hooked up on a plus sized catfish this summer. It blew my mind how much fun of a fight it was. Your day of the catfish was much more impressive.

What pound test do you use to muscle big Flatheads out of trouble ?
@BackroadsAngling5 ай бұрын
I use 20lb. It's light enough to cast the small jig heads I'm using and heavy enough to handle most flatheads if you take your time. When you get a 30lb or 40lb fish it's a real adventure that takes a little luck to work out in your favor.

I was using a fluke on a jig head. The ones I was using I make myself but you can find similar ones at bass pro, cabelas or scheels. Conditions have changed a lot since I filmed this. The water has gone way up so be careful if you go down there. You can't walk up close to the spillway right now.

The problem is you can't throw these lighter jigs and present them properly with heavier equipment. So you have to find a middle ground of rod and line that is light enough to cast but big enough to handle these fish.
