After almost 40 years struggling to get a single pull up, going for more than 20 years to the gym, and even having a personal trainer for a couple of years, I finally was able to achieve my first full pull up using the method Greasing the Groove, as described in the video, for a week or so with a pull up bar at my home. Now after achieving that milestone is much easier for me to build up on that and increase my number of full pull ups gradually.

I’ve been trying to women who do calisthenics for a while and I’m astounded I only found you just now! Thank you for having this YT channel and inspiring folks like me into getting into calisthenics. I actually just achieved doing two pull ups in a row last week and I want to push forward to at least 3 so I can start including them as sets in my strength routines. I started doing aerial silks last month and I think it’s what really helped me get that second pull up!

Grease the groove really does work. I have been trying with a negative program three days a week for two months but there was no visible progress. Maybe also because it's hard for me to be consistent this way. With grease the groove instead, by doing a jumping assisted pullup with negative every time I passed through my bedroom door, after three weeks i could do one unassisted pull up almost full range (not dead hang, but with almost straight arms). The progress is visible this way

Lightly training movements has been huge for me! I've noticed improvement in my pushups and even recently achieved pistol squats for the first time, just because I'll get up every 15 minutes throughout the day to stretch and do some basic exercises, including a couple reps of pushups (done with attention to form), and some basic two-legged deep squats. I don't push myself too hard or focus on numbers of reps, yet I'm seeing improvement just by being consistent and getting a sense of joy out of feeling the blood flow through my body and feeling my muscles work. I think a lot of exercise advice glosses over just how important it is to practice the movements with good form as consistently as possible, without focusing on pushing yourself too much or doing X number of reps. Making movement a consistent, continuous, and enjoyable part of daily life has been a game changer for me.

Keep at it! I'm 'only' 58, but I'm also about 300 lbs. I will have a way to go before I can do a pull up, but ya gotta start somewhere, as they say. I just 'discovered' the little fitness center in my new apt complex, and the big pulley machine does have a pull up bar, so that's where I'm starting!

I started 11 days ago, i often trained my body during my life but I never did pull ups before.. now the desire to be able to perform pull ups has born in me and strongly.. i watched a lot of videos about how to do pull ups for beginners especially because being a man weighting 95 kg so about 210 lbs i am not able to do a single rep yet but as you said i am positive and i am working out two times a week to achieve the goal so i worked out three times until now and i feel happy and confident. I am working out in this way: 1 Warming up. 2 Assisted pull ups, 2 sets to 85% of failure. 3 Isometric hang at the top of the movement 3 sets to failure. 4) 3 sets of 5 negative reps with maximum effort from up to down 5) 3 sets of one isometric scapular pull up to failure 6) 3 sets of dead hang to failure I'm using the reverse grip exept for dead hanging and for scapular pull ups, in time i will add pronate grip exercises For the moment 45 minutes of working out in total (i use 90 seconds of rest between sets) Being you advanced in pull ups what's your opinion about my pull work out? Is it good? Thank you if you will answer🫶

I recently began working out. I've always been super skinny but with a diet that would kill most. pizza, 1 liter of soda everyday, never drank clear and simple water ect. I've recently begun working out, stopped drinking soda and i'm feeling so so so much better about myself. My goal rn is to be able to do one pull up. I'm working my core, arms, back and arms with the goal of doing the pull up. I downloaded your "get your first pull-up" sheet you left in the description and i'll do my best. Thank you for sharing this video, this will help so many people. Well done!

Thank you for the video. I used to be able to do 8 pull ups with one negative at the beginning for warm up when I would climb the rope without hands in a nearby park. Now, I can do 0.9, since when I pull, my chin is so close to the bar and I could only pull up when I kip which I heard isn’t the best muscle strengthening exercise. I love your advice and maybe I could get my pull up habit back.

The lat pull down machine is basically a pull up machine. Start there. You can do normal sets of 10-12 reps, but also do some really heavy ones with 3-6 reps. Maxing out your pull strength there is where your gains will come. I'd stay away from the assisted pull up machine as it just reinforces weakness. Instead, spend that time at the bar. Just hang on it and mess around and have fun. Do scap exercises like shown here. Do negatives. Do isometric holds it you can. Get that grip strong and be comfortable being on the bar.

Thanks Summer! 🤗 I have struggled with one area of the pull-up and that is that mid-point. My negatives are really good now, going slow for 10 seconds. I can do 8-10 chin-ups, but I know those are different muscles. It’s just that transition spot where I feel weak, and if I can get past that couple inches, I know I can get there, then head to my high pull-ups. I don’t think strength is my problem. Am I supposed to be focussing on doing something in particular at the transition point???

Hi Summer , I am new to calisthenics , as well as that I am 59 yo . As where to start is so confusing . My ultimate overall goal is full body conditioning , however , one pull up is my first goal. I don't go to gyms , been there ,done that. My main ? is which is better to do ? Active hangs or dead hangs ? do they have different effect or the same ? Love you videos , others say '' do this'' , ''do that '' , without the detailed explanation which you give .

Not to put down other female fitness KZbinrs; I feel like you are one of the only few to be qualified on teaching this. I seen saw many “how to do pull up tutorials.” And most them can only do four…and they are not strict most of them have scapular elevation in all their reps. I’ve seen one where the person can literally only do two. The fact you can 16 pull ups and do 10 muscles ups with great form is insane
