Hello everyone, I'm Hiro Morita and welcome to SUMO PRIME TIME! First, I want to thank each one of you from the bottom of my heart for checking our contents. We also love hearing from you so please keep those comments and suggestions coming! On this episode of SUMO PRIME TIME, we pay a visit to a rikishi who's known as "The Iron Man of Sumo". He's also the winner of the fall tourney in September. Yes, you know who I'm talking about and he is Tamawashi. He's the top division's elder statesman who'll turn 38 in November. That said, nothing seems to slow him down and in fact I think he's getting better and stronger with age. What I wanted to find out this time was the secrets of his toughness and durability, and also how he's able to keep himself in tip-top shape. He overwhelms his opponents with the devastating nodowa stiff arm attack and I wanted to learn some of the keys to successfully unleash his go to weapon. After receiving some tips from Tamawashi, it was time for me to challenge the iron man. Watch Tamawashi and I lock horns in the middle of the ring and see who comes out on top! Arigato always for watching SUMO PRIME TIME and we hope you enjoy the show!!

Hiro, thank you for your uploads! I love the more playful approach you have to show us Sumo in an easy light! I am a newcomer and interested in all the aspects of sumo! Also, astonishing how these giants from mongolia can learn the difficult japanese language too! How they do it? Greetings from Germany!

If Kataonami stable only has four rikishis, then how do they manage to do other non-ring tasks such as cooking the chanko for a post-practice meal.

For anyone wondering, it sounds like Tamawashi is talking about engaging his lats, mid traps and rhomboids to stabilise his shoulder and arm while pushing, the same principle required to bench press well.
@BillHallProductions

I found that super interesting. And when watching him attack with that in mind you can see him arch his back a little to engage those muscles.

Wow, the staggeringly modest conditions of Tamawashi's stable make his accomplishments all the more impressive. The fact that he is able to compete at the highest level at such a consistent standard is nothing short of amazing.

Tamawashi seems like a very nice and knowledgeable man. His stablemates must be lucky to have him as a training partner. Also respect to Hiro for getting knocked around for demonstrations purposes. Really shows the strength and balance of the rikishi to send people flying without effort, and how impressive it is for their opponents to withstand them. As always thanks towards the sumo prime time team for bringing us these interviews and sumo coverage between tournaments. But if we're going to see these interviews with every tournament winner I'm hoping Takayasu finally becomes champion in November. Would be interesting to see what techniques he would demonstrate on poor Hiro.

At 35, the only time I ever feel old is when I'm watching commentary about sumo. ;) I mean I totally get it, doubly so given how young they start and how hard they train every day. Yet still, when I hear them talk about age in sumo I immediately feel motivated to have the most full day ever to make sure I'm not wasting any of my life, haha!

The fact that he helps his other stablemates and they all seem happy too, says a lot about the atmosphere of their training and their oldest rikishi. Gambatte for years to come, Kataonami boys!

I’d like Tamawashi to be asked about his fighting style. He’s Mongolian but a rare one who uses oshizumo. The others are grapplers due to their backgrounds in Mongolian wrestling. Why is he not?
@zamedoeswtever5267

Simple, because he did little Mongolian wrestling in his teenage years, only came to Japan to reunite with his elder sister in the first place, only picking up sumo later and the rest is history

Yeah, I meant I’d like to hear it from him, in his own words. That aside, it’s not a given he’d become a pusher-thruster just because he learned in Japan. Grappling is also Japanese. And Tamawashi learned sumo at a time when Japanese rikishi were just as likely to fight on the belt as not. It’s only the youngsters now who have gone oshi mad.
