Great stuff guys, thanks for showing all the little details. Good luck with the whole 1000hp project. All the best, Mart in Solihull.

Quite a gearbox very robust looking. It must whine quite a bit with those straight cut gears.. This is a very interesting series. I thank you for your desire to share with the world.

Looks like a giant M/C trans. In great shape throught. I would have oiled the parts on reassembly tho,,,Keep goin',

Strange that the reassembly is being done dry? We always used assembly lube to ensure all went smoothly on first startup.

Yes that's not a good practice, but those two gentlemen are doing quite a sloppy job, installing bearing with a hammer like some redneck crazy mecanic!

I am not a mechanic, but I have some machining experience and have bee through abespoke gearmaining shop in Sheffield to see some of the processes involved in making large gears like these. I did notice some edge damage to two of the gears in this box, Not that nasty but did some of the teeth need dressing to smooth them - or would that be counterproductive?

When the car was making its record passes back in the day they had issues with 2nd gear engaging. That’s the result of it. I doubt this car will go into 2nd gear again since 1st gear takes you to 70mph.

Nothing like an old socket to drift a bearing in.

Sliding pinion gearboxes always show chipping and rounding of the tooth leading edges - even the most skilled driver is going to crunch the gears in a crash gearbox occasionally, especially when getting used to the particular vehicle - and this, of course, was a one-off, and a pretty fearsome one at that. In fact, I was struck by how pristine the gears in this were, reflecting the relatively few miles it actually travelled - you should see the state of the teeth in a bus or lorry gearbox which has done hundreds of thousands of miles!

The gear at 8:17 is a bit chewed.

Cheers me up to see someone at that level using an old socket to drive a bearing in.
