My dad's birthday was June 9th. He passed away in Jan 2017. To this day I still catch myself wanting to call and wish him happy birthday. My first thought every Sunday morning is usually to watch the new Sunday Shoot Around. Then I start watching and Hickok is talking about the very thing that's on my mind. I guess my first thought should be to thank God for blessing me with another day, which I do. Life is good!

In 1987 when I was in was Canadian infantry, we switched from the FN 7.62, to that. The first batch, we had nothing but issues, switching from a wood/steel rifle, to plastic / "steel". Lets just say we broke a few magazines, stocks and foward grips. Plus the barrel was too thin and could not hold up the Canada's wide range of temperatures. Our Rangers up north, still use the Lee Enfield, which will be replaced by the Tikka T3x Arctic Rifle.

One of the problems with harvesting deer after the season is closed. In the heat it is not easy to keep the meat away from the insects and such in the heat. . . There are many reasons for closing the hunt window as the temperature increases.

I’m sure your mom was in good care at the hospital and Hospis care in Cincinnati. Some of the best doctors and nurses in the world practice in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. My condolences to you and your family Hickok. I graduated high school in 1999 from Campbell County High School in Alexandria Kentucky. Very good school system in Campbell County and all the other districts in the surrounding area,like Boone and Kenton County. I was born and raised in Melbourne Kentucky and still live in the area to this day. I’m always in the woods target shooting or deer hunting in Melbourne Kentucky.

Talking about cost of old style AR's..... I built a "almost" 100% authentic semi version of the M16A1, triangular handguard and all! I did use a A2 buttstock tho so not quite "right" but close enough for me, looks like one from Nam! Most expensive build yet! Just the upper receiver was over 200 bucks, stripped. Wanted a early AR for last 4 decades, finally got it!

teaching before the 90's was great even before my teaching time. I had an astronomy club and rocketry club I ran for years and years. I took kids out at night to view the planets etc. Launching rockets in fields after school! It was the best part of my job. In fact I did most of it for free or even paid out of pocket to do it. The kids loved it! Education today is broken and everyone knows it. School should be voluntary and based on exactly what the students want to learn about to help with their job later on. Imagine college for middle school etc. However, huge $$ keeps things status quo. Speak up at your school board meetings folks. The noisy crown gets the prize in schools.

I've been fascinated to vintage weaponry for a while now (but I don't own any cuz I don't live in america) and especially Cold War era weapons. When firearms were truly modernizing in the heat between the USSR and the us. And I'll be honest I wanna get my hands on an M-16, the good old original american AR with a 20 round mag and that triangle looking grip. I am definitely more into Soviet weapons, the good ol early AK family, Makarov pistols, SVD my beloved, etc. But there is just something about the M-16 that strikes me, and it will probably be the only american rifle in my future collection surrounded by Russian guns. It could be just the idea of it being the "OG" or just how it looks. Honestly it looks sexy, just as sexy as an AK. And the fact that when it was first used, it was strictly prohibited to use attachments on the M-16 to see how far it can go on it's own. And other gun owners will probably call me a mad man but I love weapons just on their own without any attachments. I never really feel the need for optics (except for sniper rifles) or grips, lazer sights, supressors--except for flashlights. I can see myself actually needing a light on a gun. But that's actually a surprise because I hate the look of aperture sights but I'll bear with it for the beautiful M-16.

In 2003 I was part of the Karelian brigade's reconnainssence conscript company via so called cattle wagons with a so called chimney (kamiina) in the middle 9f a train car abound to Rovajärvi. Our goup was more more discliped than the Savonians from the transportation to a chase. They let behind a trash trail.

Im 27. Built my own rifle as of recent. ARs are relatively cheap to make. I love my AR I just made for under 600. Simple duty or home defense rifle for cheap. Somehow way lighter than a Diamondback DB15 (My buddies gun)

Speaking of Heritage, I bought a new Heritage Roscoe this past week. It shoots great, and the fit and finish are at least equal to my S&W 36 revolvers. The bluing is fantastic!

We let my Dad take my son shooting on his property more than once before realizing there was a subdivision about 100' away that was in their direct line of fire with only forest separating them. Nothing seemed to have gotten through. "Dodged a bullet" on that one, for sure. Hey, Hickok, have you tried nugget ice in your tea? It's an obscure pleasure of life! Don't "miss" it!

Because you were free back then Hickok. That’s the goal to strip down our rights one small change at a time every since. We must stick together and fight back with all our ability. I remember laughing when people express fear of preserving the 2nd Amendment. I never thought the first two amendments would ever be under threat. Boy was I wrong!

Yep. It's a bit perplexing to me when I think about it, though. I can't get a handle on why I didn't take advantage of the opportunity. I think partly because we just had not been going through all the crazy gun bans, ammo and gun shortages, and such that we began to experience beginning in the 1990's. People were not in that frame of mind yet to buy "defensively." So much of the gun buying the last 35 years has been partly a "buy it while you can" thing, before politicians render it illegal or more difficult to purchase. This was not as much the mindset back then at all. I think the focus of the gun banners back then was just mostly on the small handguns, the "Saturday Night Special," that they were trying to demonize.

@@hickok45 Yes. The Shotgun News was full of old military guns for peanuts back then but they were not cool then. Even just a few years ago Classic Firearms had crates of 20 Mosins for $2K. I attempted to get my FFL guy to go in on it with me but he balked and we missed a great deal. A few years later, $$$$$.

I don't know if this works well. I heard from several people if you plant mint plants, the deer don't like mint plants. In fact, a lot of the animals don't like them and they will stay away from your other plants. Like I said, I don't know if it's true. I've never tried it myself, but mint plants are pretty good to cook with. I think might want to give that a try. That's all I got to say about that LOL 🐸🇺🇸

I played on the basketball team with Mark, David Spaulding, Skeeter Matlock, and others. Mark played football at MTSU. I still remember playing at Nolensville with a barn for a locker and we won by 40 points with every player on our team getting four fouls called. You were the English teacher that lit the fire inside me to eventually go into sports journalism, and while broadcasting an APSU-MTSU game, I referenced you out rebounding Jim McDaniels. If only you could have been healthy enough to play in 1973; APSU would have beaten Kentucky.

Drew Luna and Mark McKinnon are still around - Drew is in Franklin and Mark in Knoxville last I heard - we used to ride around country roads here in Franklin and if we saw a groundhog - we’d lay a rifle across the hood of the truck and drop him - then go knock on the farmers door to ask if we could go get it because we knew folks that cleaned and cooked them - farmers were always thankful because they didn’t want cows breaking legs stepping in groundhog holes - I quail hunted on that farm in Cornersville - then Mr McKinnon got into fox hunting and Hillsboro Hounds started buying up farms down there
