If indeed I need to replace the hose can I put a hose of my choosing?

Yes, it just has to be a similar hose and same length. You can't put back in a thicker one for instance.

Can the screws be drilled directly to houses with wood siding or do I need to find a stud?

Just installed the 100' unit. When it retracts, the hose doesn't spool neatly inside, and jams in the last 15 - 20 '. Does the same whether water is shut off (and, pressure relieved) or not. If you carefully retract it, and guide it onto the spool by hand, you can eventually, completely take it all in. But, I can hand coil a quality rubber hose faster, so what's the point? It's being returned, and a "Hoselink" is on order. If it doesn't perform an better I'll be looking for suggestions of what to try next.

How did the hoselink version workout...?

@@csjr9 Darned if I can remember what happened with "Hoselink". Don't see it in my Amazon history, but I did purchase a "Liberty GARDEN 712 Single Arm Navigator Multi-Directional Garden Hose Reel, Holds 125-Feet of, 5/8-Inch, Bronze". I do recall it leaked, and got a replacement seal from Liberty. Used it for a summer, and it's OK. But, you still need to carefully wind it and relatively slowly. Purchased it so my wife would be able to coil the hose easily. To this day, she fills a watering can and carries that around instead. If I had it to do over, I'd probably skip these reals and just coil by hand. That's what I do when I wash cars and it's quick & easy.

Not as advertised. Bought at Costco. Retracts way too fast! Look out. Instruction manual warns to not let kids operate because of this.
