Just wow. I haven't heard this track in many years, but by the time the vocals kicked in, I was back in 1998, chilling on my futon and passing a joint with my brothers in the room we shared. @@tomaschristopherbangalter No, I mean '98. I would be lying if I said I had been listening to it in'94. I didn't hear SDR until my divorce in 96. In '98, I was working at Tower Records, crashing at the family house and trying to figure out my life. This, Pavement's WoweeZowee and SK's Dig Me Out and The Hot Rock were my soundtrack for that period.

I just texted this to the lead singer and the drummer haha. I've done web work for them and their members even to this day. Also, in regards to your question "what is emo?" that's a simple question with a complicated answer. What you need to understand about it is that there were various waves of emo. It's easy to think about it similar to the metal genre. In the 70s and 80s you had your heavy metal pioneers like Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc. You can think of 90s post-hardcore bands like Sunny Day, Texas is the Reason, and tangentially Hum in that era of emo. Sometime in the early to mid 2000's the music industry caught wind of it's rising popularity and you got a sort of post commercial flavor of "Emo" that was much more glam, similar to how hair metal was born with LA bands like with Poison and LA Guns. This is how pop-punk bands of the mid 2000's are under the umbrella term "Emo". Some bands were even able to successfully cross from one wave to the next like Jimmy Eat World did. Just like "Metal", "Emo" is an umbrella term for many different styles. This is partly due to commercialization turning the term "Emo" into a marketing buzzword. The result is gatekeepers on both sides endlessly debating what "real Emo" is to this day. Hope that helps.

emo does have waves, it started in the 80s as an offshoot of hardcore punk in dc. whereas bad brains, minor threat and black flag were playing hardcore punk, bands like rites of spring, embrace, and one last wish were bringing a more introspective and more heartfelt approach to the lyrics while still being true to the hardcore sound. sunny day real estate were the pioneers of midwest emo despite being from washington and getting on sub pop which was the label nirvana was on. emo was given to bands like paramore, mcr, taking back sunday, the used, panic at the disco because that's just how things go. good stuff all around, diary is an incredible album

Glad to see you finally got to this one. Emo’s a tricky genre because it’s been around so long and has been adopted by many disparate scenes. In my mind, emo is a subcategory of post-hardcore, but some bands swing a little closer to indie rock and alternative, some swing closer to harsh grind and hardcore punk, and by the end of the 90s it became associated with a type of moody pop-punk. Here’s a list of songs your journey could take you that would encompass all of the above listed styles. Original “emotive” hardcore: Rites of Spring - Drink Deep Native Nod - Crossings Portraits of Past - Bang yr Head Post-emo style melodic alt rock: The Promise Ring - Red and Blue Jeans Christie Front Drive - 4010 Texas is the Reason - Back to the Left Post-emo pop-punk: Get Up Kids - Holiday Saves the Day - At Your Funeral My Chemical Romance - Helena Emo “revival” (new that sounds like 90s era): Adventures - Heavenly The Hotelier - Your Deep Rest La Dispute - King Park

Two bands changed my life as a teenager in the 90s. One was Radiohead, the other was Sunny Day Real Estate. To this day they are on another plane of existence for me. If you’re looking to react to another SDRE song, the opening track of this same record, Diary, is called Seven and it is an astonishingly layered tune that instantly changed everything for me in my musical journey as a kid.
