One thing that always baffles me - sunscreens are very expensive. To find a good non-irritating, non-sticky, elegantly looking sunscreen, you need to start with £25 (I'm UK based) and go up for 50/60 ml containers. Especially if you are looking for cruelty-free brands. Last summer I just bought a cheap broad-spectrum 'beach' sunscreen for outdoors activities and gave up looking 'good'.
@brianaflores77924 ай бұрын
Try Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Broad Spectrum Chemical Sunscreen. Their is a body and face one, their are the exact same thing. I put the body one on my face. The face one is more expensive and you get a smaller tube. They’re both the exact same thing.

You should talk about how Asia and Europe have more advanced chemical filters for better UVA protection than we have in the US. I recently started using the LaRoche Posay Anthelios Shaka Fluid with Spf 50 and it supposedly has the most UVA protection of any sunscreen made. It’s also safe for sensitive eyes. You have to get the European version though to get the better UVA coverage.

Finding a sunscreen formulation that is effective, affordable, works on your skin cosmetically, doesn't burn your eyes or react badly with other products, and is ethical is so hard 😭. Moving away from a brand that has a good sunscreen but tests on animals, finding a sunscreen from another brand that performs really well and is cruelty free, only to find our that it is not environmentally friendly 😖, running out of places to look at this point. For what is hailed to be the most important step in your routine, it's ao difficult to find the right one that doesn't actually end up causing problems

It will be the same number of spf protection, but more even and since people usually under apply the required amount, you will be getting the number on the label. Ex. If you apply a quarter of the required amount for face, then you only get a quarter of the protection that is labeled. Layering multiple spfs will increase the chances of having the protection that you want. Best is to also wear shades, hats, cover up as much as possible

Reef safe sunscreen is basically just marketing. Sunscreen in the ocean (before any effort was made to change ingredients in sunscreen) were nowhere near high enough amounts to harm coral, the one study showing that was really flawed and not replicable. There are far far bigger factors at play affecting coral and that's where our energy should go. Zinc is the most likely to be a problem but despite less research into zinc affecting reefs, it's really not been shown to be enough concentrations to be a problem

10:46 broad spectrum only guarantees the critical wavelength is above 370nm. It doesn't guarantee a 1/3 UVAPF/SPF ratio. Only in Europe and Australia it's mandatory that sunscreens offer both the 1/3 ratio and the broad spectrum requirement. Btw in the US it's not mandatory for a company to list wether they use nano particles, in contrast to Europe. The FDA also has no official definition of a nano particle, unlike Australia and Europe. A non-nano claim in the US should be taken with a grain of salt, there is no regulation that verifies this claim companies make. There have been brands that have sold a formula as non-nano in the US, while the same product listed nano in europe on the label... Also good to hear the podcast by the ecowell where Iain Davies, the chief toxicologist from PCPC, talks about the latest review paper on the effect of sunscreen filters on coral reefs at 37 m 51s. Also the reasoning behind the bans in Hawaii, consumer pressure, and the low quality studies underlying the ban. Overall conclusion; concentrations in the environment are too low to cause an effect, there is currently no proven link between coral bleaching and sunscreen filters, and it shift the focus away from the main problems, like climate change, wastewater effluents and overland runoff. www.theecowell.com/podcast/pcpcroundtablesunscreen

I also see a beauty chemist channel @labmuffinbeautyscience here, where she said there is no proper scientific data regarding the bleaching of coral reefs by sunscreen ingredients and there might be other variables to it. Also she said nano zinc oxide particles spreads better than non nano ones, giving better coverage.

Doc, you never really mentioned how often to reapply- for us reg people (not playing sports or sweating it off, or swimming, which seems obvious to reapply after swimming or sports), but those of us working inside, maybe a walk outside once a day, sometimes working near a window but not all day, sometimes driving. And also how often to reapply if outside most of the day, walking outside, in the sun? I’ve heard from some that we shoud reapply once an hour, but then I’ve heard from others that once in the morning is fine. HELP!!

Can you do an episode about essential oils and how effective they are? (I.e. rosemary oil for hair growth, or peppermint oil for plumping lips are the 2 strong claims I have heard). Thank you 😊

Ever since a family member was diagnosed with melanoma (still pretty early, thankfully) I've put sunscreen on every day. My family are pretty much all Fitzpatrick type 1s, so I should have started long ago. I could do better with reapplication, but it's a start.

I always encourage people to just start! It makes a difference already. 3 months ago I still wasn’t applying sunscreen daily and then I just build it up to daily, twice a day and now I can say I am a suncreen-aholic.

@@alyssavanblanckenberg1342 Sunscreen and Tretinoin have made a huge difference for me. I just need to learn to reapply!

It would be super helpful if you could do a video on skin type routines from the drug/grocery store! I'm always trying to figure out how to encorperate ingredients you mention without breaking the bank or ending up at sephora since I will impulse buy everything hahaha. also I reeeally love super goop sunscreens!! 😍😍
