Yeah few indie games can rival mario 3 and super mario world. Shovel Knight I think might be the only one that's better, at least the spectre knight campaign is. Most 2D platformers today are metroidvanias and I hate metroidvanias so it's annoying. All I want is more linear 2D platformers. Freedom Planet is another one that is either equal or arguably better than the original mario and sonic games. But even then freedom planet is essentially a classic sonic game, it began as a sonic romhack but they ended up making it into its own thing, but it's still very similar. It's as good as Sonic Mania is, at the least

Mario 3 smashes the hell out of any indie title. Indie games/developers try too hard to make political statements or tell hokey stories to deliver fun and interesting experiences or sincere likeable characters. Shantae is the only modern indie character that matches the charm of the classics. She’s cute and fun, and the games are charming.

2:03 "Taking damage will of course revert the player back to Super Mario." Not in the Japanese version. It takes you down to small Mario, same as it would do in the original Super Mario Bros. when Fiery Mario gets hit. 6:08 you can get past the tornado without running. You just need to jump at the right time. I had a joystick with a broken B button, which I used once to play through Super Mario Bros. 3 as far is it would let me. The actual limit seems to be the pyramid stage just before the castle in World 2. There's no way to break the first wall of bricks you need to get through unless you use the B button. 9:00 the choice was made much easier by the fact that NTSC televisions typically didn't show the artifacts on the right as it was completely hidden by the TV's overscan. 17:14 that's something where I always disagree with most. I think the lack of a save feature and the inclusion of warp whistles increases the lasting appeal of the game. Many stages still feel fresh. I'm not intimately familiar with all of them since they aren't part of the path I typically take to Bowser. It means I still get a lot of enjoyment from experiencing the less often traveled parts of Super Mario Bros. 3. I'm no speed runner, but I can easily finish the game in 15 minutes using only the first two warp whistles, so I wouldn't say the game is long enough to need a save feature. 18:53 the Hammer Bros on the map screen are a great addition. Avoiding them may encourage a player to try a stage they usually avoid playing. I always hated how bland the DKC map screen is with no branching paths (though I still love DKC).

@Fattydeposit6 жыл бұрын
That e-reader level world is peak 2D Mario for me. Outstanding is the correct term. Playing it on a modded 3DS of some kind is great as well as that way you bypass any emulation issues and have it running literally perfectly. Bliss.

@Sjono6 жыл бұрын
Squirrel Yet NSMB brought in Mario & Luigi’s improved moveset that weren’t present in the original 2D games. There’s no reason to do that and not to provide a game that also blows all those e-Reader levels out of the water.

@Fattydeposit6 жыл бұрын
@@implantgames You can't play all of the e-reader levels on real hardware as there isn't enough writable room on the cartridge. It was M2 who worked their magic on the WiiU reissue of the GBA game that gave us the whole shebang in one place, and it was this version that was reverse engineered to produce a 'restoration' patch that added the complete bonus e-reader world to a GBA SMB3 ROM, and together with other patches on romhacking dot net (annoying voice sample removal and colour palette restoration in particular) this, to me, is as awesome as it gets. It'd be amazing to have your thoughts on this relatively obscure yet phenomenal extra content in the future.

Mario 3 where i have to begin with this game it's not only mi favorite 2D Mario to this very day but is a game that made me love the videogames so much it was so fun to play this game and it is still a great gem of the NES i love how they tought of all the little things that make this an enjoyable experience, yes the Tanooki leaf it's really broken but they designed it like that for more speedrunning players and i love when they think in both sides of the spectrum. Yes some levels really are a strange case of why they do this for? The only thing that i don't like about this game plus the pipe stroll it's the difficulty balance in some levels and for me World 6 it's the hardest and World 8 it's easier than that even if the Autoscroll ship is there but well that's me. The control it's PERFECT! that's the best thing ever in this platformers. The GBA version e-Reader levels were some of the highlights to me in this game as always extra content it's my weakness. This is just below SMW on my favorite 2D Mario games. It's so damn good. It was a great co-op experience as a kid too, even playing with my sisters. Seeing it teased in Nintendo Power and in "The Wizard," it might be the game I was the most hyped for, ever. I still have two copies of the "Pocket Power" little Nintendo Power booklets they gave you when seeing the movie. I also think it was a bit too long. Could have used some trimming in level 7, especially the underwater auto-scroller I was never too fond of. But nonetheless a cleverly designed, fun, and timeless game.

Miyamoto “rewriting” the story so that only Bowser Jr. was Bowser’s kid irked me so much. Why couldn’t he just say Bowser Jr. was the youngest? That’s how I see it. Grew up playing sonic on the mega drive, and got SMB 3 for the GBA. Mario 3 was one of the hardest games I'd ever played, it was crazy difficult, cos I was trying to play it like a sonic game, which is a quick path to disaster. Now I've beaten it dozens of times and usually when I start a new game of it I end up just going and beating all of it in one go. And so I love it now. It is crazy addictive. I've started playing lots of SMB 3 romhacks too cos I just want more levels of SMB 3

The NES version of Super Mario Bros. 3 has a Memory Management Controller(?) Called the MMC3 and 8KB extra Video RAM in it, that enable the split screen (so the status bar stays still at the bottom) and the multi-directional play-field scrolling. @Treyworld6 жыл бұрын
@@johnrickard8512 Depends on what platformer you're into. A slightly more challenging and straightforward level progression with map interaction and items to find along the way to the end (Mario 3), or a more laid back venture with alternate exits within levels that lead you to other paths on the map (Mario World). Either one of these can be just as good as the other. The problem I have with Mario World is that it doesn't go all the way with its less linear game design. The item selection is much smaller, the inventory was thrown out completely, and there's no direct interaction with the map other than just expanding the paths to each marked level. No enemies, no mini games, no Toad Houses. Just a visually interesting map that resembles a stamp collection. The only really useful power-up is the cape which makes an already easier Mario game even easier. Especially now that you can just go to previously beaten levels and rack up lives and feathers. Fire Flowers pale ten fold in comparison to the cape and the 'P' Balloon is just a temporary tool that's not much fun to use in my opinion. Yoshis are great but they're either a little overpowered or limited depending on what stage you go to (ghost houses, fortresses, castles, levels with vines). Almost like some of the levels weren't fully developed around their capabilities. The special Yoshis should have been hidden within certain levels rather than just placed only in the Star World levels. Plus it sucks when you have a special Yoshi that you have to ditch because of those rare moments were you have to climb a vine to proceed. Having to go back to Star World can be a slog since Mario moves so slow on the map. Basically, Mario World breaks the pace a little too much for my liking. Plus exploring levels feels kind of hollow when there's nothing else to find but either dozens of extra lives or a secret exit that usually leads to another basic level. Special World, some of the ghost houses, fortresses, castles, and a few regular levels are exceptions but I digress. I only really enjoy about half the levels in the game while the other half are decent at best due to many of them being pretty simple and/or barren. I just wish the game actually utilized Mario's new abilities and flexed their potential more like the spin jump or the cape. Instead they're only needed in a select few stages. Otherwise they're just used as an option for convenience. Maybe the lack of challenge was deliberate but it still feels like it was a little rushed in development. Mario 3's levels may be shorter, but it's an all around meatier game to me in comparison. But that's just my preference. Feel free to disagree.

Love how analytical you went with this! This is my 2nd favorite 2D Mario sidescroller, second only to Mario World. Funny thing is, I've played this game a lot, but until I saw this review I NEVER knew you could kill the Fire Snake in World 2 with the raccoon tail attack, nor did I know that you could stomp out the Roto-discs with the Tanooki statue attack. The fact that I'm still learning new things about a game I've been playing since I was 8 is a testament to how great it truly is! Also want to note that I'm glad you're not afraid to be critical and point out flaws even in games as fantastic as this one. Good to know we can have people who look at classic games and don't just say "It was revolutionary when it came out" and call it a day. On an unrelated note, gonna be ordering DKC Returns 3D within the next week. It seems like it's overall better than the Wii version, though at the cost of a lower framerate. Looking forward to playing it!

I never played through the whole game in one sitting on the NES. We all knew about the whistle and a play session usually involved us going to whatever world we wanted to see that day. It was only with the SNES version that we actually played through the whole thing. The princess begins hinting about the whistle at the end of world 4, telling you that the thief who stole the whistle is on the east side of the sand dunes. So it's implied that if you get good enough to beat world 4, you then only have to play through most of world 2 to get the whistle and warp to worlds 5, 6, or 7. If you beat world 6, you get hinted about the first whistle "Please retrieve the Magic Whistle hidden in the darkness at the end of the third world". The fortress whistle is never revealed in game, but, basically, all your friends knew about the whistles, even back in 1991. As for the P-Wing and Judum's Cloud being cheap, well, the game has lots of levels and they knew that some players could beat every stage. I was able to beat world 8 before world 6, but because when you win, you get tons of P-wings, I immediately got the whistles and completed world 6 with the P-wings. I also remember world 4 being easier to complete than world 3. World 3 specifically has a level, 3-8, that is a difficultly level that is akin to something from world 6 or 7, so, that level can be bypassed with the P-wing, cloud, or using the drawbridge while more seasoned players can beat that level easy peasy. I remember tackling this shit between the ages of 8-10, it was hard for a long time before I got good at platformers. Watching this review, I feel like you haven't fully mastered the game, you seem unaware that if you hit a [?] on the left side, the mushroom travels to the right and vice versa. You also didn't mention that the hammer bros suit blocks fire balls from piranha plants when you duck. I had this game mastered by 1992, so it is interesting, nonetheless, to see someone review it that clearly didn't play the shit of out of it in the early 90s. I got SMB3 for Easter 1992 and the NES itself the Christmas prior, so I literally only owned SMB1 & 3 until Christmas 1992 when I got Bart Vs the World. I never ended up owning SMB2, but I still played that one a lot too and eventually got it with my SNES in All Stars in 1994.

What he said ^^ There is a 1-up mushroom there. Actually now that I think about it, I landed on the block on every play-through. Well placed 1-up!

This, World and Land 2: 6 Golden Coins are still my absolute 2D Mario games and they hold up remarkably well. Can't tell which I liked better.

One of out twenty levels is a water level. It's there for the variety and the frog suit exists and can be used in sufficient quantity to deal with most of the 5-6 fully committed water levels. It's really nothing to complain about.

Great review as always man. May I ask how you are able to upload Nintendo footage without being flagged up to wazoo? I don't cover Nintendo licensed products anymore due to KZbin notifications inevitably occurring. Thanks and keep up the great work!
@implantgames6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm not sure what the time limit is on Nintendo footage. 5 seconds of uninterrupted gameplay doesn't seem to trigger a Nintendo flag.

Are you going to talk about a hat in time or the crash bandicoot trilogy in the future?

I would like to review the Crash trilogy (PS1) at some point. I've been aware of A Hat in Time but I am surprised at how popular it seems to be, which is great! Hopefully it gets a physical release someday.

Any power ups you get from the mushroom house stay in your inventory even after a game over and that mushroom house you just got that power up from reopens allowing you to take advantage of this and stock up on power ups

did anyone have the all-stars version of mario 3 where pressing select at any time would let you choose any power up you wanted?
@Julian_Pepper4 жыл бұрын
the NES version of this game has aged badly because of it's lack of saves, but the fact that the SNES and GBA ports are still top tier games proves that the actual game of Super Mario Bros 3 can still hold it's own in the modern day.

1. They're not countries. 2. Mario is slow under water because it's supposed to simulate moving...underwater. It's supposed to be challenging but it's not too hard. 3. The power-ups aren't really balanced. That hammer suit is extremely RARE and I wish you were given more chances to use it. And once you get hit, its gone for good.

24:43 Holy crap, I never knew that secret area there existed! I've had to have played this game 100% several times and I had no idea. I bet I haven't seen half of the secret areas, some are probably in levels where I don't have ready access to a super leaf. Wow.
@xenxander4 жыл бұрын
World 6-10 has an unused sprite. If you punch the large block and the hammer suit shows, bouncing around.. if you're in a seated position, sliding down the slope and then the suit hits you, you'll actually see hammer suit mario sliding on his bottom. This normally cannot happen. Normally in a hammer suit, you cannot slide down hills. Since there is a sprite for it, it makes me wonder...

Awesome! ^^ Not my favorite platformer _ever,_ but I still appreciate the level of variety and attention to detail of this classic. I love the SNES version especially, which I played first as a kid. Will you review _Super Mario World_ next? If you will, cool, but to be honest, I kinda hope you don't! SMW is one of my biggest personal sacred cows!! ...That and Kirby. Ha ha ha. Again, I'm totally nostalgia-biased towards those. Although I kinda hope you review more Kirby games in the future too! Cheers!

I can't believe it took me this long to watch this video. I've been losing track of time for a few days now. SMB3 is one of my favourite games on the NES as well as one of the reasons why I'm still having a hard time deciding if I prefer the Sega Master System over the NES. It's so well designed, so enjoyable, so charming and packed to the brim with replay value and fun factor. My only issue with this game is how time consuming it is on a single setting. It took me 4 hours to finish it which is really long compared to most games at that time. I just wish it had a save feature. Despite this though. I love SMB3 to bits and pieces and I would call it one of my favourite 8-bit games alongside Wonder Boy 3, Phantasy Star, Mega Man 4, Castlevania 3, Land of illusion starring Mickey Mouse, Kirby's Adventure, Zelda 2 and etc. Seriously though, what is it with Number 3 being so consistent in video game trikogies. SMB3, Wonder Boy 3, Castlevania 3, Sonic 3&K, Crash 3, Spyro 3, Devil May Cry 3, Rachet and Clank 3, Mario Party 3 and many more. Not all No.3s are brilliant though, I only found Mega Man 3 to be barely a step above Mega Man 2 and I was really disappointed with Tomb Raider 3 as a whole and even then I didn't like Tomb Raider 2 as much as Tomb Raider 1. Great job on the review. It was really soothing and entertaining. :)

On Allstars u can farm special suits like Tanuki, Frog, and Sledge suit. Like on world 6 get to the mushroom house, take Sledge suit, save and quit, and the mushroom house respawns complete with another suit.

This is the RetroUSB AVS console (which I highly recommend) which is then upscaled to 1080p, zoomed, and aspect ratio corrected with a Framemeister.

well done sir. I've never seen the NES pop like that! I recently upgraded and modded my N64 with an ultrahdmi and it allows for my N64 to look crisp on a 4K TV. but i have never seen an NES game look so good. Very cool.

The timer isn't counted in seconds. It's ticks. Each tick is 24 frames, which is anywhere from 0.6 to 0.7 seconds, depending on if you get an X-frame or not.

Yeah it didnt have a save feature but with the warp whistles it's easy to get to any world you want :) (Not that I did that as a kid I just left my NES on) Also I was horrible at that scrolling mini game for lives but my friend was perfect so I believe you when you say it was easy. I always ended up with a star man with a leaf moustache or something.
