One thing I neglected to mention - many of you asked last week why 2019's The Lion King wasn't listed as an animated film. If it were my decision, I'd list it as animated. But Disney says it's not, and the director Jon Favreau says it's not, so I'm going to do what the creatives behind the film say and not consider it animation. Neither can say what it is, though, which is weird. EDITED TO ADD: Yes, I made a mistake in referring to Your Name as Makoto Shinkai's last film. I'm aware of Weathering with You, I just got the dates mixed up. I understand that it's often done to be helpful but please, if you're going to point out an error, check to see if someone else has done it first. It's not fun to make a mistake in the first place, less fun to have a dozen or more people point out the same mistake.

It was actually another wonderful film called, Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko) that released in 2019. 12:10 And Mario is the only non-sequel in that Top 5. It didn't need a previous movie to generate hype. That's fascinating.
@Cloud-dt6xb Жыл бұрын
To be fair it did have something to help generate hype, that being the games. And unlike Sonic Mario has never really had a bad dip in quaility that series has had a steady consistency for 30 years and counting so it's benefiting greatly for that. The sonic movies by contrast were released at a time when Sega did and still were really screwing up the game side of things. Thankfully things have started changing on that front and my hope is that this consistent quaility continues so Sonic movie 3 can benefit from the positivity. Frontiers was good, it's got some amazing dlc coming, and Sonic Prime is pretty good entering it's second half this year. If Knuckles is a bullseye then Sonic will see two years in a row of positivity for the first time in a decade.
@Alejandroigarabide Жыл бұрын
@@Cloud-dt6xb That's kinda my point. It used a different medium, that being its source material, to generate hype. The source material is strong enough on its own to create enough hype. That's the only case in the top 5 where that's enough.

I appreciate the "How much money is ..... making" calculator each week. I've always been interested in that but I think since Dwayne Johnson decided his ego couldn't take the loss from how poorly Black Adam did there are a lot more people being clued in to the calculations that go into determining how much studios actually end up with at the end of the day. It's a great addition to the segments you have on the show each week.

I checked out Suzume even though I don't care much for the writing in anime (esp since the horrible ending to Attack on Titan), and I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it that I'm going to go a second time! Such a genuinely refreshing film that didn't display any of the grating tendencies I've come to expect from so much modern media, especially modern Western media, where creators seem more obsessed with surprising audiences than with satisfying them. Really wish more creators learned to accept the fact that predictable and sweet are far from the worst things a film can be.

Regarding your "How many money makes movie XYZ" lists: How about back end deals of actors? Is this already calculated in the production costs? Let`s say Chris Pratt gets 5% of what Super Mario makes . That could be around 20 million additional "costs" that the studio does not make as a profit.

Me again. I was just wondering, with the franchise tracker. Since DC is basically starting fresh beginning with Superman: Legacy will you keep looking at DC movies as a whole or will Superman be the start of a new franchise that will be compared as a whole to the previous DC franchise. Like, do you compare Superman: Legacy to Man Of Steel and BvS (even though I'd argue that's not really a Superman movie) or do you take the entirety of the DC films prior to Aquaman as it's own thing? I've never been big on comparing the MCU phases because in essence they're almost different franchises themselves that are trying to do different things. But in that way of looking at it does everything in the current iteration of DC become like DC Phase 1 and all the new stuff kind of a DC Phase 2? Am I just making things really confusing? I've been known to do that.

Speaking of the "How much is...making" calculator I've been curious regarding the movies that were held over or had to delay because of covid. There's a number I'm interested in that I'd never really considered before. Since studios don't always use their own money to fund a film there must be movies like 'Flash' that have accrued extra costs by just sitting on the shelf for years. It's like getting money from a loan shark. The vig is still running until the movie gets released. Is that a significant cost or just something they're able to factor in to the overall budget. Hollywood financing is shady as anyway. I saw a thing the other day where Nintendo has it stipulated that because they put up 50% of the budget they're expecting to make back 50% of the profit once the movie hits a certain amount of box office return. But because of the way studios structure their deals most movies never make any real money back in a way and Nintendo are unlikely to see any real return on investment. That's probably a lot to get into but you are my numbers guy and you may have insight into this I'd be interested to hear about should you read this and think it's worth the effort getting into. Thanks.
