I like how Bowser's actions are genuinely socially unacceptable and we can find it off-putting as heck, but then as soon as his plans are over, we still love the guy and pat him on the back as consolation for being rejected. I mean, he's a cartoon character so who cares, but its food for thought. I wonder if its okay to portray a character with such beliefs in a positive way, if its okay that the rest of the characters tolerate him and still invite him to the parties and whatnot. It's been stated that a recurring theme in some of the levels is extreme contrast. For example: - Metro Kingdom's New Donk City is a large, realistic city, contrasting with the cartoony Mario and Pauline. - The Sand Kingdom is a desert, but in-game it suddenly gets covered with a bunch of ice. - The Wooded Kingdom looks like a forest that has managed to grow over a nearby military factory. The people claiming Mario and Jumpman are different people are WRONG, Odyssey confirms they’re the same person - not only do the citizens cheekily tell Mario to “Jump, man” (which in itself isn’t conclusive evidence), the festival celebrates the city’s founding, which they all claim involved Mario (and the festival literally is a remixed version of the original Donkey Kong, culminating with the 25m level). So yes, Mario and Jumpman have been confirmed as the same now IN GAME, which is as canonical as it gets. Also you find out it’s the same Pauline in the game itself (not postgame) if you stay in NDC after the festival and talk to her to take her quiz. Side note: it’s super weird that Mario and Pauline don’t outright acknowledge each other. Like, they don’t even greet each other, their interactions seem to imply they recognize each other and yet they also act like strangers, it’s a weird blend of familiarity and strangeness... I mean, assuming they broke up and now he’s going around the world to rescue another woman, I guess maybe it’s just a case of awkward ex interactions. “Thanks for... um... saving my city...” “Don’ta mention it.. so...” “Yeah...” “...you are a mayor now?” “Yeah... yeah... How’s the plumbing?” “Oh I’ma not a plumber anymore...” “Oh... so... what do you do...?” “Well... I mean... I get the feeling that tacking on the Mario world theme pattern to every game undermines it a bit. We definitely have said grasslands deserts forests and jungles, but each one has a complimentary theme. and Each world can stand out on its own, unlike New Super Mario Bros 1 2 Wii and U, that always recycle assets and color palettes. And to be frank. I think grasslands is a very poor representation of any world. If it's a large space and has grass. it might as well be called grasslands. And the only Fire world in the game is either also the Food kingdom, or a small segment of the moon kingdom.

Actually there is a way to differentiate main series Mario games from the Mario spinoff titles. All the main series Mario games start with “Super”: Super Mario Bros, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Odyssey, etc. Save for Super Paper Mario, all the spinoff titles don’t start with Super: Mario + Rabbids, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Paper Mario, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, etc. In conclusion, when referring to the main series games, say “A new Super Mario game’s came out!” (Like calling it Legend of Zelda and not Zelda), and when referring to the many spinoffs of Mario, just say “A new Mario game’s came out!”

Just making sure nobody misunderstands, you can play co-op with any Switch controllers you want, not just the single joy-con, two joy-cons each or a pro controller is totally fine. Also if the second player (and the first player too, that would also help) knows what they're doing Cappy can be op as hell. He can jump and move around way faster than Mario, can make Mario jump much higher than normal and can turn bosses into a joke since on top of all that he's invincible and can ground pound at any time in the air. The second player can even use Cappy while Mario is inside an enemy or object (which honestly is pretty weird since throwing the cap on them is what transports you into them) and he can make you jump from one captured thing to another without even jumping out yourself first, or he could do lots of other stuff like beat enemies in your way or collecting coins and hearts. Btw this was an entertaining video as usual.

I have to say, I disagree with your "grasslands desert forest ice world fire world boss" bit. Unlike, say, New Super Mario Bros, very few kingdoms in Odyssey simply use a "vanilla" terrain as their theme. The forest world has this interesting fusion between industrial metal and lush vegetation, the desert world has a Day-of-the-Dead flair to it and is frozen when you first find it, and the snow world has a bizarre obsession with racing. I also don't know why you dismissed the "wildcard" worlds, which are quite creative!

In galaxy, the second player can also force player 1 to jump too. Always gotta sneak at least one way in to fuck over the other player. For the hell of it, we played through a few levels once where the other person controlled movement and I controlled jumping that way. It was an interesting way to play.

I feel like tons of visual tones is a huge risk for a mascot character like mario and paid off huge. It makes him feel less like a clean, corperate Mickey Mouse character when he can be found walking through a crowd of real humans or next to a photo realistic dragon.

You *can* turn the camera in 2 player mode by pressing X, but it only fixes the camera behind Mario so it's like reminding the game where the camera should be, and if you are smart you can work around the limitation.

It's kind of annoying that you have to complete a main objective before all the collectibles in the kingdom are unlocked. And Mario is a little bit more slippery than I'd wish. Other than that... yeah, flawless.

They do in fact acknowledge that it is the same Pauline that you rescue from Donkey Kong. At one point she asks you to guess the answers to some questions about her, and one of the questions is about what she used to do, with the answer being "get kidnapped by an ape."

Another weird thing apart from the fact that Mario is evidently not a human is that the game takes place in a universe that is clearly not our own, but which inexplicably still has Italians, despite the fact that Mario and Luigi appear to be the only Italians in it.

Regarding some of your points in the video, (and this isn't complaining FYI) the point of the game's environments were supposed to be weird and, consequently, not keep one visual tone; that's why New Donk City visuals are realistic, to clash with Mario. The developers strived to do that. Also, it's referenced *several* times on how Pauline is literally the exact same Pauline from Donkey Kong. I mean geez, have you taken a look at the decor of the city? It's arcade DK stuff. (I don't know how you could've missed that...) And I think lumping Super Mario Odyssey's worlds with the stereotypical Mario worlds is doing Odyssey a great disservice. I mean, the game has been getting perfect scores across the board due to its creativity, (similar to how Galaxy was praised) So it must be doing something right. All in all, I feel comparing it to games with lack of creativity is off-putting and trying to look for complaints. Complaining about motion controls is a logical complaint, the ones above, aren't frankly. With all this said, I'm not saying Yahtzee has to suck this game off, but some of his complaints were not very thought out. (I'm a big fan of Yahtzee btw, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't being held to a quality review standard I know he usually has.)

Yeah, the problem isn't that he criticizes the game, or that his "journalistic integrity" is off, it's just that he's not as entertaining when he picks half-assed complaints that don't actually pan out, especially when there are properly scathing ones sitting right there. In this case it really feels like he wrote down the "oh it's another mario" list beforehand and then crammed the script into that even where it didn't fit. To trot out the deadest of beaten horses, it's like his Monster Hunter review when he harped on getting himself stuck on the tutorial, despite there being a lot of really great and funny things to criticize about that game that the fanboys themselves regularly point out!
