The 1958 Adventurer was an update to the all-new styling that all mopars received in 1957. Along with the annual trim changes, the car also received a new grille with a mesh insert, plus dual headlights with slightly revised openings. The cars debuted at the Chicago auto show in January 1958. The Hemi engine was no longer available, instead, a 361 cubic inch wedge head was used. DeSoto offered fuel injection (produced by Bendix Corporation), the units proved troublesome and were an expensive option so very few Adventurers were sold with them. Those not equipped with the unit received the dual-quad carburetors. The shortened model year, combined with the effects of the 1958 recession dropped Adventurer production down to 432 units, 350 hardtops and 82 convertibles, a 78 percent drop in sales compared to 1957. However DeSoto itself was in the midst of a sales free-fall, and all series production was off brand-wide.

Quick story. !958 was a bad economic downturn in the US plus Desoto sales were slipping, so Chrysler replaced the beautiful anodized gold wheel covers of the 57 with these cheaper-to-make spinners to cut costs, but the gold wheel covers returned in 59. Great video and great car. Thanks, Bjorn!

A beauty for sure! Those cars rusted out so quickly that it ruined Chrysler's reputation for quite a few years. A distant relative had a '56 Adventurer; gold and white with a Hemi. I think it had air conditioning, too. Not sure about that. Thanks for another award-winning video!

Great looking DeSoto. My grandparents owned a 1950 Desoto. I remember riding in it when I was a kid. It is sad they discontinued the brand.

It's kind of like a bigger, fully-loaded '58 Plymouth Fury... I love the late-50s Mopars, and the Adventurer is very close to the top of my wish list, along with the 300s and Crown Imperials. This one is especially nice.

The DeSoto was pretty much a Chrysler. The Dodge is the one that was closely related to the Plymouth.

@@michaelbenardo5695 Not exactly. While the bodies were pretty much the same, everything else including the engine in the DeSoto were different from Chrysler.
