I found this video really informative. It makes you aware that yachting is conducted as a business and not just a sail around the bay. Thank you!

This only applies when it IS done as a business. Lots of 100+ meter vessels are registered as private pleasure craft with 12 passenger places and are exempt from a lot of this. Tristan covers it after 12:00 mark.

As a captain who I know and respect deeply said on one of our last passages, we are not meant to be out here (on the water), it's dangerous, and you have to be vigilant whenever you step on board. He's not saying the sea does not have a draw for many of us, it's that we don't have gills, and as such, life on the water is serious business. I have to believe by the way you deliver your videos you ascribe to that same sentiment, taking seriously the health and well being of the passengers, crew, environment and boat.
@ianhamilton3963 жыл бұрын
And if you didn't know, this Captain has experience that most other Captains don't have. And that's a real live fire on board during which he needed to abandon ship. He's worth every € he gets paid, and more.
@martinosborne28423 жыл бұрын
Some times real live experiences heighten your awareness of the t rainging you are given, whilst working in a large distribution I had to deal with the aftermath of a trailer fire, that made me take our fire training even more serious than I did before, it was very sobering.

Not all commercial crew fall under MLC requirements . In the fishing industry crew who are " share fishermen " are currently exempt , we are required to issue crew agreements and if we're operational 24 hrs / day for 3 consecutive days , roughly log hours , if we lay up for a few hours each night then there are no requirements.

Well presented Skipper, remind me of my days in the RN regarding safety, except for the working hours, lots more than 77 per week and UID inspections of my Armament magazines every 3 months on Destroyers containing tens of thousands of bullets, rockets, explosives and missiles, one small bullet over or under on the audit could have meant Court Martial, very stressful being an OOQ on any large RN warship. Be safe. ex CPO (OPS) (M) RN.

No , in UK you may need an MCA inspection above certain lengths , anyone can skipper any boat non commercial up to 24 meters . The skipper of a private yacht regardless of size is still responsible for everyone and every detail onboard, and for everything ship related.

Great video, thank you! One of the things that (I think) is required on a commercial vessel is that you have to have a person with a commercial radio operator's license. On a private boat, you don't need that, all you need is an SRC or an LRC, depending on what equipment you have on board. The commercial operator's certificate needs to be renewed every couple of years, the LRC and SRC are valid for life. I'm not sure requiring a commercial operator's license is really necessary on a private vessel (it's in the owner's own best interest to be proficient with his radio, and he probably is, since he probably gets lots of practice anyway). The safety standards probably should be similar, but at the end of the day, the owner of a private vessel is responsible for his own life, the operator of a commercial vessel is responsible for the lives of his customers and crew. The owner should know what he's getting into, a guest coming on AWOL doesn't. That the crew of a commercial vessel is held to a higher standard is probably a good thing - people are paying a lot of money for them. A conscientious owner will hold himself to the same or similar standard, though. ;-)

These flag inspection seemed not to be perfect? We follow you at least 3 years and at least this is the third inspection you are telling about - but this time he found a missing reflector - after 3 years of operating without. Another question to your crew: How do you manage the free time of the crew - or is it easy when the vessel is on long journey? Also I see constrains if the customers want specials.
@thebigmacd3 жыл бұрын
This is typical of inspections of any kind. I'm involved in rally racing and nearly every time we go through scrutineering they seem to find something that was never noticed before. For example, at one rally they got out a mirror and started checking between the top of the cage and the roof on every car. Sure enough, the car we had recently purchased that had 15 years worth of scrutinizing done on it had improper welds there. Never been caught before. There's a trick we use in construction...leave one or two obvious minor deficiencies for inspectors to find so they don't start making things up to justify their job...

I think safety meetings are a great idea. We started doing that where I work plus a safety drive to clean things up and accidents dropped significantly. 10-20 minutes once a week to discuss any issues solved allot of things. Our managers and the old timers didn't like it too much but our insurance provider loved it and dropped our rates significantly. I'm glad out province pushed these initiatives as well as I believe we are not the most dangerous province to work in anymore. Although seeing people wearing safety jackets everywhere all of a sudden was kind of a shock.

Tristan, I'm going to tease you a bit, you give the raffle prizes in pound and dollars, never in euros, is it because of Brexit?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Apart from this joke, I also find safety normal and I would not understand that an owner of a private yacht, risks health or an accident for the crew, his family or the yacht, only for the money. thank you for the information, your videos are always a reference 👍👍👍👍

What would happen if a captain was caught single-handling his own private 50m yacht?
@k538473 жыл бұрын
In the US AFAIK there is no requirement for crew or a masters license on a non-inspected vessel (which generally means a vessel that doesn't have paying passengers or is used in trade). But past 30 meters it's not practical to operate without trained crew, it's just too big. And 30 meters is pushing the limit, I'm not sure if any modern 25 meter boats don't include some crew quarters.
@jamesmerkel94423 жыл бұрын
If private had to comply w/commercial no1 would own a boat, it would kill it off. volume buss is yr round or go go seasonal & private is fraction far less, not w/paper work if only took boat out 10 trips/day ish per yr. 3 months at sea & time to look her over.

They are out on the sea! The stakes are a lot higher. If things go wrong they can go deadly wrong! It is extremely important to be constantly checking and rechecking all systems on a boat and making sure everything is in good condition. There is a saying in the sailing community that it's not if you will run aground but when you will. There are 2 types of sailors those who have ran aground and those who will. Now obviously the sailing community that I'm a part of is not the super yachts sailboats, but even so there are so many places where the sand bars are in constant change, the wind and wind strength and storms and tides and just so much that can catch one off guard or even an anchor failure or a mooring failure can land a boat on the reefs or on the sand bars. Now throw in that these guys are professional yatchsmen/women and the size of the yatchs they are responsible for... Having one of these monstrosities drag through an Anchorage could endanger so many lives. It's bad enough to see any small in comparisons boat dragging through an anchorage. Then when out to sea there are so many things that can go wrong the laws are there to protect the lives of all.
