World renowned supercar designer, Frank Stephenson, reviews vehicles from the hugely popular video game: Watch Dogs Legion!
--------------------
Hi, all. Back with another venture into the wild and weird world of video games. This week I'm taking a look into the dystopian vision of 2030 by Ubisoft in their latest game Watch Dogs Legion. 2030 is just about far enough away to get really creative with the technological capabilities and I'm really excited to dig in!
Enjoy,
Frank

There are so many exciting possibilities when designing vehicles for a dystopian version of 2030 like they have in WD:Legion. How do you feel they did with the opportunity? Are you happy with their direction or were you hoping for more? Hope you enjoy this weeks video! Frank

I think that in general the designs are good👍, we can see that they have been inspired by current cars and concepts to make them, which is not so bad but I would have liked more if they had made designs not more futuristic but original because they still look quite similar to what do we see today🤷‍♂️

The last car that Frank is critiquing, the two-tone bicolors are referring to Pugeot's onyx concepts or their series of concepts in 2018, where they explored with bicolors and two separate materials like cluster composite carbon fiber and a unique silver, copper or bronze color. The designs were so dynamic that they were and are currently featured in the Gran Turismo games.

Frank after e-Mustang vid I have been thinking of EV sound profiles and have come up with a solution. I call it the Jericho Horn (after the sirens fitted to JU-88 dive bombers of WW2). Tubular air intake with reeds, same as any wind instrument, valves and a trumpet bell. Motion of the vehicle forces air through the tubular construction to provide a variable pitch dependent on the speed of the vehicle. Basically a ram air operated saxophone. With the right tuning, even a Toyota Pious could sound soulful.

In the science fiction of the past, it often happened that the future was imagined very different from how it turned out to be. For example, blade runner imagined flying cars by 2019, so more modern sci-fi works tend to try to do the opposite and create a future that barely differs from ours. Maybe that was their design goal. PS: Blade Runner 2049's flying Peugeot review?

The goal for the cars of Watch Dogs Legion was to depict a (somewhat) realistic London setting in the near future (iirc it wasn't even as far ahead as 2030 originally), which means traffic would be made up of cars from the last 10, 15 years before the time the game was set in. A lot of these designs are now up to 4 years old, with many obviously inspired by car concepts of years prior. That probably explains the what might feel somewhat dated design approach.

One thing I kind of have a gripe with in games is how when cars are from the same company they never have a design language that seems to align including in GTA which only parodies specific models but doesn't try to make each model follow a brand identity it can be a lil immersion breaking on something striving to be a parody of something? I just wish they'd understand that a lil more I guess.

You're definitely not too harsh. With endless possibilities, the video game vehicles should leave real world designs in shame, not be washed down knock-offs. Though the virtual vehicles may be done by general 3D artists who don't have any education in automotive design. So perhaps game studios should collaborate more with real car designers.

There's a concept called Convergent Evolution, where creatures across multiple species, evolve to have very similar features and occupy similar ecological niches (think sharks and dolphins, or lemurs and monkeys, whales and whale sharks). I think that this applies nicely to vehicles and design. Especially with electric vehicles and sports cars.

Great, and highly informative review as usual. But the idea of having no moving windows in the future means no drive-thru meals. As for a grille on an electric Car? The Jaguar I-Pace has one, and it is for drawing air to cool its electrical unit. Electricity also generates heat. Computers usually start to hum when they get hot, that's the sound of their cooling fan.
@andrewduong2740
@andrewduong2740 3 жыл бұрын
You could also guess that not all of these cars were new in the year the game is set. Maybe some of these were from some transistory period from petrol to electric in the game world's history, when designers were still figuring out how to work around grilles as defining characteristics of a car's expression or a company's brand, eg. BMW i8, Tesla Model S

I think the main focus was on invoking familiarity, so people feel at home in this world, while highlighting one or another new thing, like that AI taxi that can go both ways. Also it's 2021 now. Cars don't seem to change that much in 10 years, or very gradually, because people tend to reject too much change. Does a Peugeot manufactured in 2020 look that radically different from one from 2010? By all reason, most cars on the road in 2030 will be the ones that are being manufactured between right now and 2025.

Other than that, there is a game called Automation where people can design cars, if Frank were to make a subreddit people could make their own designs and put it there for discussing with others, could even work as a place to discuss aspiring designers' workpieces. Also would be nice in a way that Frank could react and share opinions about the cars his community made.

The Oscuro Ultra 8’s front design language actually reminds of my a bit of the W motors (W meaning wolf) Fyner supersport. The hood wedge part I’m the middle above the headlights reminds me of its hood. And the side profile reminds me of Lamborghini’s 2018 Vision GT concept. The rear has a wing that reminds me pf the Ferrari FXX K a bit, and also the Lamborghini Veneno. I can also feel that there is something about the headlights I recognise but I can’t seem to think of it. That’s my comment.

We are as far from 2030 as we are from 2012. So let's think about how car design has progressed since 2012. To me the three significant changes have been: 1) advances in lighting technology (LEDs, Lasers) allowing better sculpted lights, 2) electric vehicles creating new possibilities in packaging, wheel configuration, and front end design that haven't been fully harnessed yet, and 3) computing advances allowing for products like the Segway, and drones. So in 2030, I wouldn't be surprised if motorcycles are partially replaced by 1 wheelers like the Gyro, city cars go back to 3 wheels more safely than the Reliant (maybe with multiple such cars docking together for stability on the highway), and a breakthrough of some sort in material technologies (such as glass we can use in the A pillar) that opens up new surface detailing. But how radically different will cars look in 9 years? Probably not a great deal for the most part.

CRX is one of my favorite designs by Honda. Wish Honda would bring it back but with better design than the CR-Z. Wasn’t a huge fan of the CR-Z. Was bummed they aren’t selling the Fit in the US anymore, but after seeing the new Fit, I’m not quite as bummed 😋. Thank you Frank for the great content each week! I always look forward to Thursdays!

I feel pretty sure that despite what he says cars in 2030 will look just like today cars but with slightly more curves, the big difference will be seen on higher end cars

I totally agree with you on the BMW. 3:15, I see a cross between a Lambo and a Bugatti, and the rear wing is based on track versions of the Bugatti. 5:04. Look up Canadian Heavy trucks from the 1930's, especially the Doodle bug. 7:18 A possible Ford Cosworth design. 9:35. Bikes are already doing this and will hopefully have passed it as a fad. 10:18. What if it is an Acura NRX from the Twenties and possibly one of the last cars that isn't an EV. 12:02 I have to say Maserati, if it is an Import. Or Chrysler if it is "Domestic". And I am sorry to have to tell you this, Aston didn't make it to 2027. No, you weren't harsh enough. Designers not being able to give us good designs in the near future? They can't do it now. The bland "colored" eggs and squashed jelly beans that you see now started in the mid Nineties and never did anything afterwards.
