It was the narrow "off-road buggy", so bodywork and tires/suspension were tough and would not be bent out of place. (But you're certainly more likely to catch a rollover than something much lower to the ground/wider)

A friend of mine owned a 1952 ,all aluminum Jag roadster. He did the Pike's Peak Rally several times. On one run ,he ran into the cloud layer. So he slowed way down, because it was total white out. He was then passed by a Ferrari, he pulls to the side of the road, shuts off the engine and listens. He can't hear the Ferrari, he gets out of the Jag,and walks up the road, he then hears some one cursing a blue streak and struggling. Approaching the edge of the road(a drop of about 1000 ft) hear is the Ferrari driver trying to climb back up on to the road. My friend helped him up and took him as passenger for the rest of the rally. The Jag driver was Charlie Morgan, classic Jag drivers will know him. Rest in peace Charlie.

I am a senior engineering student, my motorsports experience is only in Formula Student. This video summed up our emotions on our last event, except for the end: We followed the if it ain't broke don't fix it mantra. We had new hubs for our second year car, but didn't swap them because testing was limited due to covid. We went to our last competition after a failure in the first one with our hopes being high. On acceleration, our tripod on the right rear hub rode the insert, a result from a driveshaft failure last year. We had skidpad and autox on the next day. We decided to not replace the hub and hope for the best. It did the same thing in skidpad, machining the insert completely. In 5 hours, we swapped the hub, pressed it into the upright and passed tech (again). We were 5th in autox and as we were celebrating a bolt was found to not meet ground clearance: DSQ Next day endurance: everything is checked and ready: Car goes out, blitzes everyone but the top teams (millions in budget, ours not even in 6 digits). As we are celebrating techs find oil spills from the catch can, a one way valve had failed and oil had boiled: DSQ Sour taste but a rollercoaster experience in 2 days.

As a former motorcycle competitor on pikes peak, this video absolutely captures what almost every privateer goes through. I've had engines fail to start during practice, synthetic clutch lines melt on the start line as I get the green flag, crashes, poor running tunes, etc. Persistence is the key to this race. I started in 2012 and finally won in 2014 in the lightweight moto class. Always fun watching stuff like this

My comments don't show up in certain places but hoping this one does; This was an awesome video, great footage, excellent story telling of the challenges and the culmination of all their efforts. I initially misheard "everything finally went smoothly" as "everything finally meant something" , can loosely relate to thrashing to get to an event just to break right off the trailer, or in the first run, etc. as both interpretations (misheard and actual) are definitely how I've felt. The absolute legend that rolled and their cage/chassis builder(s) are to be applauded.

I've built and run a lot of race cars and it's quite incredible how many things go wrong and for seemingly the strangest of reasons, in the end you learn to build and prepare the car to an exact formula where every single thing you've learned from all the previous failures is included in the build then at last you reach a point where the darn thing works reliably. At times I seriously wondered if God was playing a game with me the way that the reliability issues were caused by so many, so strange and such unforeseeable things.

I was a "crew chief" -- and I use that term loosely -- for a sidecar effort in 2009, the last year with gravel. I road raced motorcycles for 6 years, before that, I did autocross sporadically, and I have to say that PPI was one of the most challenging, rewarding, and emotionally-charged events I've ever had the honor of participating in. I'm sad that they banished motorcycles, but glad the event continues onward. Like you, Matt, I love that they embrace the anything goes true prototype ideal. @@clonkex I don't know the full answer, but it was suggested that the speeds were getting too high for motorcycles -- it's already a bad place to crash, but going faster make it even more lethal. An alternate wording should be: "As the team unloaded the car into the pits the night before the race, the sky looked dark. And then it got worse. And then is got worse." Should be: "And then it got worse. And then is got worser." Thank you for the lovely video.
