I mean they didnt stand down. They could have talked one of the biggest points of contention that makes no sense in the story is that they never talked until it was too late. Nothing of the story makes sense in order for it to happen. Because Batman and Superman would have talked if that came to pass and it would end up similar to Justice Lords in the animated series.
