I have always felt Jonathan Kent’s death was hard for Superman because it’s easy to save someone from a falling building or stop some muggers but not saving someone from a natural cause of something that kills people everyday is the hardest.

That’s part of why Jonathan’s death in Man of Steel feels so contrived for many people, because Clark could have actually saved him from the tornado, and the only thing preventing him from doing so was his concern for the greater good.

@@crodo123 You're talking about a show about a character called Superman, who's an alien that looks exactly like a human, that has super strength, super speed, heat vision, super hearing, x ray vision, can fly, has freezing breath, dresses in tights, wears a cape, and acts like a bumbling idiot on a daily basis to cover for his secret identity. EVERYTHING about Superman is corny. And you know what? This show is actually so much more mature than recent movie adaptations, where the only dark thing is that the director turned down the luminosity to 20%.

My wife and I have twin boys, six years old. When they were about to be born, I had to send them to a distant city, because there was no ICU bed for two premature babies in my town. One of them was born a cardipath, Fallot tetralogy. The other, at the age of two, was diagnosed with autism. Seeing this beautiful opening sequence reminded me that even a superpowered being like Superman would have the same problems as us. And that I have two fantastic kids, my own superboys.

These 4 min have done more for the Superman character than most ever could. - vulnerability; couldn’t save his father despite his power - heroism; saves a kid while gently placing car down - humbleness; here you go friend - relatability; my mom made it for me - love; Lois is sarcastic, but never near annoying & even helpful towards a new guy. Not to mention there’s actual chemistry other than the sexual kind. Looking at DCEU. Just great honestly.

Thank you! This is key. Clark's father dies from something he CANNOT prevent. That's part of the psychology and I personally think any half way decent Superman portrayal should tap into that. For all the power in the world, there are things he CANNOT change. He will lose or be severely challenged by those he loves. That is what causes a superhuman to grow and NOT be invincible. They face emotional consequences from living life and having relationships like the rest of us.

I actually kinda agreed with MOS. Jonathan Kent was willing to sacrifice himself in order to protect his son. He knew that the world wasn't ready for Superman. He was right as Bruce Wayne wanted to kill him. Bruce saw him as a threat to Earth and by killing him Bruce would have actually done something meaningful as the criminals were easily replaced. So Papa Kent did what what any Dad should have done looking after his family.

In under 5 minutes, we feel Clark's grief at the loss of his father. In under 5 minutes, we're endeared to his awkwardness, especially how head over heels in love he is. In under 5 minutes, we get a sense of an entire love story. In under 5 minutes, we feel like a part of his family, both its ups and downs. In under 5 minutes, we learn not only Superman's origins but who Clark Kent is. One of the main issues I have with a lot of modern Superman content is some writers/directors try so hard to make Superman realistic or make his appearance cooler (I want those trunks back damn it!!) or make Superman seem edgier. But that scene in his classic suit was spot on. Cheerful, friendly, down to Earth despite being an Alien, and honestly the "My Mom made it for me" represents all of that. It makes the most powerful hero on the planet seem so relatable and human that you forget he is an alien, and the fact he is so happy when someone compliments his mother's handiwork just says it all. In his first appearance, he instantly gives off a vibe that this is a man you can trust and rely on, that there really isn't a bad bone in his body. This is Superman, plus I really hope to see the retro suit again in some more flashbacks, it looks great!!

@@anurb.s.c.anurb.s.c.2329 Yeah, it's just a post-crisis change, along with the many other major changes. The whole show is filled with massive ones. For one, they had an infant son during Crisis, yet somehow now have two teenage boys. Which means Lois and Clark got married and had kids wayyy sooner than originally, or the show takes place into the future. The latter of which is probably less likely. Another change is that Sam Lane is a new actor, and is aware of who Clark is, and not antagonist towards Superman. On Supergirl, he didn't know who she or Clark were, and he was pretty antagonistic towards aliens. Though some things didn't change post-crisis, such as the Smallville farm set, and the suit with trunks on the outside, which got mentioned in a flashback episode of Supergirl a few years ago. This is still the same character as before, just on a newly merged Earth, with a different history than before. I am surprised the show doesn't bring up at all the confusion he must have felt suddenly having teenage sons when he had a infant son pre-crisis.
