Thanks Super Mario. This was very informative. I was struggling with diagnosing the EGR system on my 98 Expedition before watching your video as I didn't know how to properly interpret the voltage on the unplugged signal wire for the DPFE sensor. I incorrectly thought my PCM was fried. Your video provided the proper interpretation for the signal wire voltage. After watching this video, I am confident I can make a good diagnosis.

Excellent job. I like checking for a plugged cat with the dpef sensor hoses and a back pressure gauge.

Thanks! I've never used that method. I just stick a transducer in thecylinder and snap throttle it

2002 Mustang.. Reference wire voltage is around 1 volt at idle. Activate the vacuum to the EGR, and voltage rises to around 3 volts as engine stumbles. Question.. Can restricted flow keep the voltage from reaching the full 5 volts, or would this be a sign of a failing DPFE sensor?

HY MARIO , THAT QUICK AND DIRTY SEEMS TO TO BY THE IN THING ONLY ONE THING CHECK YOUR CAMERA ANGLE EVERY NOW AND THEN DID NOT SEE THE FIXED READINGS ON THE METER AFTER THE REAPER THANKS AGAIN MARIO AND PLEASE KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING MAN !

Suggestion if I may, you want to also see, in the scan data, that DPFE V agrees with what you see on your meter. If the DPFE works and the PCM doesn't know it, then there is more work to be done. Know what I mean?
@SuperMarioDiagnostics6 жыл бұрын
You are correct! Although confirming 5 volts(disconnected) from the pcm signal wire confirms all is well from the pcm to the sensor. I think I trust my meter more than what I see on an after market scanner.(have seen discrepancies before, as have others) Nonetheless, great point made. Thanks for checking out my channel bud 👍

Hey man im having the p1401 code pop up and i just cant get it. I just recently bought my 2000 ford range and The egr valve looks replaced. Its pretty new. Ive been chasing this thing and i cant figure it out!
@lgninjalo2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. This confirmed a bad DPFE sensor and may not be *the* problem, but certain is *a* problem. I'll know if there are any other causes of my codes after a couple drive cycles.

I have that same meter. It tests DC amps which is super. Very accurate too. Checked it against my Vantage Pro. It also is great for household 120/240.

wyattoneable i remember cringing the first time i heard of the DPFE system. I want people to see that there's not much to it. Thanks Wyatt for the kind remark. Much appreciated!

Sir, I just repalced my DPFE sensor.. bought one on ebay of $10.. brand new, i was carefull that it was for my 03 expedition.. install it but was not sure f the "Ref and Hi" hose locations, so after seeing this video I have to switch them around. I did get P0406 code excessive or A high current.. so I will test and see what happens.. Thanks

I'll try this, different approach to narrowing it down, thanks

I think this is my issue. I’m not really understanding then again I explain things while I’m working differently myself so how did you come to the conclusion and have you ever seen one fail but not all the way? I’m asking because I believe I have found my issue and this is the problem?

Nice video man. When you unplugged the sensor and had 5v on the signal wire is that a bias voltage from the computer for diagnostic purposes? Thanks Mario :-)
@SuperMarioDiagnostics6 жыл бұрын
Technically it's not a bias voltage, it's a reference. But the computer uses that to check circuit integrity, and we use that to check it via open circuit voltage testing. But by strict definition it's not BIAS voltage. In my personal experience I've never seen 5v bias voltage(by definition) I've seen other voltages 2.5 etc... I hope this makes sense
@JustAnother_Irishman6 жыл бұрын
Super Mario Diagnostics sweet sure does thanks. We don't see many of these DPFE sensors on EGR systems here anymore, but we do see them on DPF systems . :-)

Mario what happens if you apply vaccun to the egr and dont do nothing
@javman4socalr8092 жыл бұрын
If idle does not change or engine does not almost stall out, then it means clogged ports or bad egr valve. You may want to check vac line from egr solenoid (the cylindrical thing Mario put his finger into) to the egr valve. If vac line is okay, then clean ports and openings or passageways in egr valve and ports where egr valve connects to throttle body. Use a small brush, shop towel or even a small screwdriver along with carb cleaner spray with attached straw. Let dry for 10 mins or so then reattach EGR valve. After cleaning and making sure vac lines are good, do the test again to see if engine idle changes or engine almost stalls out. If it does, then you can assume egr valve and ports are good. If you are getting code P0401, then you have ruled out egr and egr solenoid. You now move on to check dfpe sensor as possible cause. I am sealing with this issue right now. Ugh!

A little confusing with the egr valve solenoid. You called it a couple of different names. Just a little confusing to new diy’rs. But other than that, excellent explanations and troubleshooting.
