When the older generation tells us things were made to last they weren't even joking. I'm not even that old but I can see a difference in things from my childhood and now and that started when I was 20. I'm interested in seeing a comparison with 80's Crayola as well!

I had a 120 pack that was from the late 1990's (Circa 1998) from when I was about three, and it lasted me until about 2006. The pigment in the 1990's through about 2009, were just as good as the 1920's crayons, but ever since 2010, the crayons really dipped in quality.

That is so crazy! I HAD to click on this. I got those crayons for Christmas when I was little! It was set up in a kit which was placed in an old tin Crayola lunchbox that probably had the same picture on it that was on the box of crayons. 🖍 It was one of my most memorable Christmas gifts. I’ve never seen any like it since.

I’m totally with you about old pigments. You don’t even have to go so far back to get the good stuff. I had a set of oil pastels from the 1980s and watercolours from the about the 30s, and when I had to replace them with a modern set I could only find horribly brash artificial pigments, even in branded sets. I stopped bothering with oils after that, no matter how skilled my blending I never could get the same rich colours. 😢

I love the old art supplies series! Personally, I use Winsor and Newton tube watercolour paints from 50+ years ago! My grandparents owned an art and music store, and when my uncle bought it from them, he decided to focus on music alone. So many of the art supplies kind of just got left over. Being the family's most prolific (not best, just most obsessive lol) artist, I ended up with all of these amazing watercolours! I had given many of them to friends who are equally as into art as I am, but I always made sure to keep one tube of each colour. I still use them to this day, and there are still SO many of them!!

I'm so sad how the quality of everything has just completely collapsed. Not just for for art supplies, but for everything. Back in the day people used to own fewer things that just were producded better. I feel like these days it's an evil marketing tactic that everything breaks so easily, you have to be soon replacing what you just bought. This goes especially for clothes. Though I'm sure there are things that are also better in quality these days because technology has improved. I know this goes for a lot of oil paints in particular. But the mindset of people has changed for the worse.
@madiz4228
@madiz4228 3 жыл бұрын
I actually a video recently about how different clothes are now. Back then, there was like a popular style and you’d get a dress or suit in that style that would last a long long time. Now trends happen so quickly so clothing companies don’t feel the need to make as good of a quality because people will move on in a year or two.

Back in the 70s, I got hold of my mom's vintage Sargent brand crayons, and they were so much better than the new Crayola's even back then. IDK when the formulas started changing, I assume probably around some war or another, but vintage crayons are where it's at - they're actually artist quality instead of children-please-don't-eat-this quality. History of crayons could be pretty interesting - were they originally for kids? who made them first?

Crayons made today are completely subpar. I am in my 60's, and decided it was time to get back into crayon work. YUCK! I bought new Crayolas, excited by the idea of going back to where I had begun my love of art. They were horrible. Nothing like I remembered. I thought maybe memory had played a trick, so I dug out my crayons from about thirty years ago, and tested them. Crayola should be ashamed of themselves. Nothing like the real deal. I have since been on a quest to find something similar to what crayons used to be. So far, oil pastels are the closest, but still not quite right. Glad I ran into your channel. You have some really interesting subject matter for artists. Keep up the good work!!

I have heard that claim about modern pigments, and I suspect it’s not true about either. By the time these old crayons were made, the synthetic dye industry had been around for decades, and so these crayons are basically guaranteed to be made with synthetic pigments, which are all cheap. A pink crayon simply has a smaller amount of magenta pigments and more white pigment (probably chalk). A red crayon will have far more pigment. (Magenta and yellow.)

@@kindaakaii867 I think they mean the design and formula for our modern day crayola crayons have been in use for almost a century. It would be so cool if you would do a review on Crayola retired crayon colors, I actually have 2 retired crayon colors one is dandelion which is more common since it retired in 2017, and the second is thistle which is a light pink purple color retired in 1999 from a 1997 64 crayon pack. I love your channel and art history is one of my favorite topics too! ❤️🖍✏️🎨
