John, when I encounter situations like this where fish are kind of milling around in shallow, calm, clear water, one of the funnest ways to get fish is by burning a weightless soft plastic across the surface so it’s almost skittering along. Sometimes it’s incredibly effective and results in some awesome visuals. I was doing this with 20 pound class earlier this year using a 12” Sluggo. Would love to see you try it and get some great GoPro footage with it!

I pulled a few fish out of a hole that the bass trapped bunker in at dead low tide last week. So much bait that top water was not working so I decided to fish bottom. Took out your bucktail from s&s and was able to hook up! Love the videos! (Seaside Park NJ)

I get such a kick out of how bigger blues quickly snap their mouth when a human hand gets close to them. They really mean business seeing they're such a voracious predator that will eat and attack almost anything their size or smaller.

This just happened to me about two weeks ago where they were literally at my feet. I was able to get a couple, it was fun watching them hit my lure a few feet away from me, but just like that 15 minutes later, they were gone like they were never there.

Hey John, can you specify what you meant in the video by choosing this beach based on wind and tide. What is your general rule of thumb about this? How does it differ North shore vs south shore?. Wind and tide in same direction, etc. Thank you for always teaching.
@JohnSkinnerFishing Жыл бұрын
It's very spot-specific and just takes experience with an area. Some beaches produce better on ebb, others flood. The best wind direction depends on the orientation of the shoreline, which in this area is extremely variable due to points and coves.
@josephmasone1478 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks John. I guess generalities don’t exist in fishing as much as I would like. I’ve had a frustrating season and the 23yrs of logbooks and finding patterns seemed to hold true less and less each year. I fish mostly south shore beaches where ‘soft’ structure is ever changing seemingly with each storm. North shore beaches typically offer up large Boulder that cause these natural rips where I guessing you want the sweep of the current in the same direction as the wind. Seems like a more predictable scenario for someone who is short on time and trying to eliminate as many variables as possible. . The older I get the more time is at a premium so my plan for next season is to try to find a more consistent patterns on the hard structure of the north shore. Is there a wind that tends to make the water chocolate milk or weedy on the north shore that you generally wouldn’t fish?
@usobninja14 Жыл бұрын
Nice easy fishing on nice day, can’t beat it, I was down on the south shore last week and fished an hour and a half of falling tide without a tap, right around slack tide the bass pushed a school of very large adult bunker up into this shallow pocket I was fishing, had some really good fishing for about an hour till the water rose enough for the bunker to escape, we’ll see how long it continues as the last few days were not as promising lol, enjoy ur thanksgiving skinner

John, My understanding about the north shore beaches is that non-residents cannot use the parking areas - even in off season periods. Do you know it that holds true. If yes, do you know about public parking along the north shore other than Orient Point?
@JohnSkinnerFishing Жыл бұрын
It all changed with Covid. Now they enforce all year and no longer sell a non-resident permit.

Awesome. In your experience, ever any big fish mixed in? And would you consider this season a off year for Albies?
@JohnSkinnerFishing Жыл бұрын
September was very good for albies compared to a normal September. It didn't come together well in October. The most albies I saw on the surface of the Sound was November 9. Most people had packed it in by then. Water temp that day was 55 degrees. Big fish mixing into those blitzes are rare if the bait is bay anchovies, as it was for me every time this fall. Bunker brings some big ones, and big blues.

John, Would those boot foot felt waders work well in all sand beaches?
@JohnSkinnerFishing Жыл бұрын
yes
@livenhfree4 ай бұрын
Hi, John. Do you always use boot foot waders from shore/sand? Most time I hear they're not comfortable. I'm assuming the ones you use are just fine, just interested in your thoughts. Thanks. (BTW, on your recommendation, I'll be getting a pair of Korkers for jetty/rocks.)
@JohnSkinnerFishing4 ай бұрын
If I'm wearing waders on sand, then definitely bootfoot. Stockingfoots wear out quickly when sand gets between the stockingfoot and the wading shoe.

Hey, do you think the color of a buck-tail matters right now for stripers here right now, and if so, is white the way to go? I have been using 6 inch curly grubs so that should be fine with the buck-tail right. Also just wondering, should I constantly have it moving around mid water level or even top? Thanks!
@JohnSkinnerFishing Жыл бұрын
I'd go with white.
@fredfrederick5607 Жыл бұрын
White is always the way to go with bucktails
@joehawk9839 Жыл бұрын
The amount of fish in this video I am certain chartreuse would of worked just fine. However I have to agree with him overall White seems to catch better.As a charter captain for many years in Maryland bucktails haven been predominantly replaced by parachute lures tied with nylon and Hula skirts tied with rubber skirt. The skirt material is the same thing used on largemouth bass spinnerbaits and jigs. Of course these are trailed with 6 and 9 inch shads predominantly. These lures are trolled. My experience is that all colors work , but overall White does seem to catch better. Of course I am just discussing color when referring to these style of lures and trolling techniques.
