I had a Mercedes of that era, a CL, and had the connector on the transmission leak, but it didn't show around the plug at all, it instead wicked up the wires and showed up at the transmission computer. Fluid in the plug and about a tablespoon of fluid in the computer itself. Fortunately, it was caught before it damaged the computer and was perfectly fine after cleaning everything up and replacing the pilot bushing.

I have an E500, 2005 MY. I do all my own work, save for periodic safety checks. The balljoints on the 4Matic and AIRMatic cars are tough. I also did the valve covers, breather cover, all 16 plugs, upper control arm and lower ball joint, sway bar link and AC rebuild (2nd Mercedes this year..) and your water pump finding stunned me. I inspected mine and zero shaft play, I have no idea how that M112 was even running like that and no coolant leakage out of the weep hole! Unheard of here. I usually do the idler pullies when aux components fail.. in the case of this 0HP non-runner when I bought it, the old compressor was such a mess, both pulley bearing AND compressor failure occurred... belt chewed up. The previous mechanic misdiagnosed a midrange error to a failed air mass meter... and condemned that and also the intake manifold since the customer complained about a rough driveability issue. MAF was dirty, front o2 sensors were bad. Now it's a 302 HP well running machine. Much cheaper fix than the quoted 1500 so please be careful if you don't do your own work! Nice work Car Wizard and Magic Mike, you guys always nail it! Oh.. the SBC topic: Warranty extended 25 years. Have the form signed and save all that coin if the pump is expired.

I had a W211 for a few years and around 200 000 km. The SBC brakes are somehting to get used to. You won't feel ABS in the pedal, you can do a full emergency stop with the force of your big toe if you want to (it judges the speed of how fast you take your foot off the throttle and put it on the brakes to know if it yould be an emergency situation, and in my case it always judged correct.), it has electronically distributed brake force which makes braking safer in cornering -> You can hit the brakes as hard as you can in a corner, and the line will stay the same. And in the rain, it brakes immediately when you hit the brakes. Bakc then this wasn't the case in almost any car, as the brake discs have water on them in rain, and when yo apply the brakes the water needs to be wiped off by the brake pad. SBC did that by itself. This was the reason why all W211 even those with the smallest 4cyl engines and the lowest trim had a rain sensor as standard. So the car would know when to "dry the brakes". And suprisingly that did not result in more wear. While i had the car, only the read brake pads needed to be replaced once. (As it had rwd and we have winter in the alps, the traction control added a little wear on snow sometimes) In those years i never had any problem with the SBC brake, and it took me to get an AMG to have similar feeling brake performance. And basically they stopped using it in the e-class in 2006 i think mainly for costs. The SL had the same system and they didn't remove it from there until the end of the model.

i just bought one of these and it’s in slightly worse cosmetic shape, and it’s got a few very minor issues (slightly inaccurate fuel gauge, bad alarm causing fuse to short, suspension rides a little high i think) but in general the powertrain is in wonderful shape (bone dry in the engine bay, good coolant, stays quiet, starts well) and it had pretty nice michelins on it with plenty of tread left. My independent mechanic said it was in overall pretty good shape, so once the minor issues are addressed, it’ll be a super solid car!

I knew the motor mounts were bad when you said the car vibrated right at the beginning. I've had it happen on my 01 w210. The right side is fairly easy to do and the left because of the steering you have to remove the exhaust pipe from the manifold to get to it. A lot of people use a lot of weird tools and lots of contortions but removing the pipe makes it fairly easy. Did you actually pry bar the control arm bushings to make sure they are good? Do those flex discs outlast u-joints?

Everything that needs to be done on that Benz is maintenance items. Totally worth repairing and getting another 50,000 to 75,000 trouble-free miles. I had a 2008 E350 I really enjoyed that car. I loved the look of it. That style is timeless. It was reliable and felt like a quality-built car. The Chrysler transmission is actually very robust. It is used up and down the line, Sprinters, Caravans, Chargers. They can handle a decent amount of power and abuse.

It is not a Chrysler transmission but a Mercedes transmission but was used on some Chrysler products when Mercedes owned them.

3:12 Oil leak; Valve cover gaskets, & replace pcv covers & gasket / silicone - 4:07 odd/funny noise front of engine: WATER PUMP. (I'm not a mechanic, but wonder why there wasn't antifreeze on the ground through the weephole that the owner would notice? Also, is it an illusion, those bolts look to be backed out?) 9:53 Wheel bearings, right front. 11:16 Shot motor mount front left. 11:35 Transmission mount collapsed.

Wow! Super nice Mercedes! It’s good to see someone who keeps their car in nice shape! This car will last a long time with continued servicing. We had ours for 24 years before my mom got rid of it. Old Mercedes cost as much to repair as new ones! I wish I could have taken the car and fixed it up. Engine ran fine but it needed a new suspension. Only $3k would have fixed that problem. The interior was in pretty good condition but it needed a new paint job and some rust repair. Can you tell, I loved that car! 😂

I always like the M112 engine. Its in my SLK320, my wifes Crossfire STR6 and my Crossfire Limited. And yes I've had to do the valve cover gaskets on all 3 of them. You probably already know but FCP Euro has a kit that includes the gaskets, new bolts and new PCV lines.

Nice work on the new intro Mrs Wizard also a good eye for the interior reviews. Car Wizard I had the same thoughts as soon as the noise appeared it is so distinctive. What is with wheel bearings and engine mounts on all these cars don't people check them? I remember when my Sister in law was first driving I had to take her car for our MOT Test and I turned it on and selected 1st gear and i got a loud thud as the engine tilted and hit the fire wall and the gear stick dropped about 2 inches, Later that day I asked her about the banging and I said do you just turn the music up to hide any bangs her answer was yes, then I looked at the brakes metal on metal on the 2 front outer pads and about 1mm on the inner pads we had to have a big talk with her and she developed a few brain cells.

You've gotta love all the sacrificial components on the Mercedes. I owned an E430 since new, it was a nightmare. Electrical issues, tranny problem you name it. Sold it with 39k on the odometer and moved on, by far the worst MB I had ever owned.

Wizard, back in 2016 I was looking for a car found one of these for $2,500 bucks but I like the idea of a 7-speed, and the lighter aluminum engine that the newer model had. But I like the straight six for ease of repairs that the older model had. I didn't buy either. Now I hear that the older one was the best one to get and I wish I had.

I’ve got a 02 Camaro with over 200k miles and haven’t had hardly any repairs except wear items and water pump. I guess Chev is better engineered or the engineering actually carries over to the parts manufacturing and didn’t end on the blueprint

I have a CLK320 with the same engine, I haven’t seen the full video, but by the symptoms, engine bushings, valve cover gaskets and maybe timing guides or one of the accessory pulleys is what the weird noise from the front is. These are the most common issues of that engine

Wizard, use a high temp RTV on that breather. If not, I’m a traffic jam on a hot day then can melt and then you can imagine. Also be careful removing the breather from the valve cover. They’re quite thin aluminum

The 320/3.2 engine is known for periodic replacements of the valve cover gaskets. It's a weak point in an otherwise great engine. But for some reason they go through valve cover gaskets as though they're a consumable part. I replaced them on my E320 wagon when the passenger side had developed a small off-and-on leak, resulting in a light smell of burning oil. One upshot with these is that they do give you a long warning period before they start to leak badly. But I can't say how long between replacements because I sold that car a couple of years later and the replacements were still good. However, based on a conversation with my mechanic at the time, most 320's will need them replaced about every five years. I'm sorry I can't help anyone in how to calculate the frequency of replacements, because I don't know if the cause, is due to mileage or the amount of heat cycles, or from sitting too much. The engine and transmission mounts replacements are more predictable. For most Mercedes that I've had and heard about, it's usually any time after ten years old. That doesn't take into account cars that accumulated heavy mileage, such as three to four hundred thousand miles during the first five years.
