42 is the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. Since you needed 42 steel plates (or some other amount, which is irrelevant) to get out of the hole you dug for yourself, I'd say that constitutes proof that Douglas Adams was connected to something far greater than himself. It could just be a (forced) coincidence, but that's not nearly as much fun. ;)

I swear to Clang that there was nothing forced there, complete coincidence or cosmic sign are the only two options :)

I thought it was me, having 42 plates is one thing, but needing that exact number as the answer to saving your Life, which is Everything? I mean, wow. Talk about interconnectedness. ;) Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is lesser known book by Douglas Adams, but in a similar vein to Hitchhikers Guide. If you haven't read it, it's just the sort of random adventure I think you'd like. If Capac hasn't read it, he should, he seems to live it. He kind of reminds me of Dirk. ;)

Blocks flying off grinders at ridiculous speeds is caused by the "tool shake" option in world settings. Disabling that option fixes most instances of it occurring. At least it did for me the last time I tried making a grind pit a few patches ago.

another point to add is the autominer seems to function better with tool shake turned off at least I think having it on is what cause mine to have problems when I was testing it out because when I turned it off the autominer started working perfectly, though there could have been some other unknown issue that i was unaware of.

Splitsie I suggest turn down speed for extending pistons in grinder pit. I think the speed is too much for grinding which may result to bits of things glitching through the grinders.
@Splitsie

I'll give it a try, fingers crossed it reduced the left over bits a little :)
@jirikukuczka9228
@jirikukuczka9228 6 жыл бұрын
I think it'll help. Right now your speed of the 3 pistons is 1.5m/s (3x0.5) which is too fast. If you set speed to 0.1m/s on each piston than the speed 3 pistons expanding at the same time will be 0.3m/s. In worst case you could extract 2 pistons with default speed and enough distance to the point where only last piston will be expanding with speed of 0.1m/s. I hope it will be this fixed :)

my method that works for a grinding pit is a floor of landing gears and the grinder comes for above, i dump whats to be grinned inside a seal it the landing gears hold it and if part fly off they always hit another landing gear and gets caught then the grinders just stop right before they start grinder the landing gear. this always works for me.
@Splitsie

I didn't test out the landing gear, certainly a good solution especially as it would work in space too

I'm glad you included the "evil" grinder pit in your series. These things are very nasty. I finally ended up with disabling tool shake in the options after I had complete cargo probes flinging through 10! armor block walls. My best attempt with tool shake on: - static grinder wall with glass/catwalk blocks in front of it and moving a wall of small blocks with embedded landing gear against it. The small blocks can make a very tight wall against big blocks so you can push even small grid pieces against the glass wall
@Splitsie

I was impressed with how effective the voxels were at stopping most of the debris, the situation was so much worse when I used an armor lid - likely similar to what you saw :P

perhaps removing the outer drills and replacing it with a slope so everything is forced into your drills of death might stop the little parts gathering on the floor?
@Splitsie

Hmmm... I wonder if something like that would work - it might allow for replacing the bottom of the pit with blocks as well, just not sure if that would create a space for parts to fly out from...

You should add a connector above the solar panel the the version 3 sand bag. This would allow you from a ship to reload both the ammo and the parashoots automatically if you made a deployment craft to do just that. So make a ship to move them that auto pulls ammo and canvases from the base. Them have the sand bag pull those from the ship while it's being moved. Then you can drop it with out fear every time letting the shoots land them.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
That would certainly make rearming them a simpler task. I'll have a think about how I might set something like that up as I wouldn't want to cover any of the solar panel...

Splitsie, you should set up a sensor to detect small grids in your grinding area... that way when they are gone the pit will auto retract.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I think I will do that, but it's probably not going to work perfectly - with the small pieces that are often left behind I'll need to leave the very bottom of the grinding area outside the sensor range, but I still want to do it so I don't have to manually control :)
@hogfry
@hogfry 5 жыл бұрын
From experience. It's A really REALLY good idea to bury your grinder pits deeply into the ground and keep them distant from your base. The blocks can be thrown out with BALLISTIC force by the grinders. And nothing will ruin your day like having your base/ ship bisected by a random high velocity gyroscope. I've also found a good design is basically a giant V. Where you have two sets of 3-4 grinders rows, facing each other. With each row set horizontally, with each lower row set one block closer in towards the center. An at the center a final row, placed at the bottom of the pit and orientated vertically. It tends to bounce parts back and forth inside the pit.

So Splitsie, remember how i suggested a large and small sand bag, well you can think of them like squads. Then you can turn a squad on/off vs individual or all. Might require slightly more planning, such as assigning sandbags to controllers, but would probably benefit in the long run. This would also allow you to limit the power usage on the smaller sandbags and only need to beef up the controllers. You might need to contract a script to find sandbags with the squad name which could be called as "squad action" from a programmable block or timer. Program->squad_prog %off%->timer (10 min)->squad_prog %on%
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
That would certainly be an interesting approach, and give some good control. I might have deployed a few already but there's nothing to stop me updating the design even once I go to space :)

I vote for large grid turrets for the new sandbags :D Also, you might consider putting welders for the grinders for when they are fully retracted so that any damage caused during grinding is repaired. I'd also slow down the forward movement of the grinders a lot... as that's part of why things are being ejected from the pit. :)
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I'd have to make the whole thing large grid for that though, since I want them to be printable in the future :) Nice idea about the welders, they'd be super easy to set up in the current configuration too :)
@LoriH2O
@LoriH2O 6 жыл бұрын
If you don't mind having two projectors... could maybe have the small grid stuff printing out under the large grid and do it in a way such it's easy to attach them. A little bit more work... but you basically just grind off the turret, hit attach, grind off the base. Could be fun if fiddly... but those large turrets sure have a lot more range! :D

You can raise your grinder wall a little bit using another piston or rotor, and then you can put blocks on the floor. The voxels under the floor will still stop flying pieces.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
Sadly then the grinders would grind down the floor :( I had been thinking of doing that and just having floor until the closed off part but now it's built it would be a very large amount of work to set up :/

Something to note with the sandbag on/off transmitter is that the antenna from the base will likely reach all of the base defense ones. If your vehicle antenna reaches the base, it will be repeated. Also the sandbags themselves can act as repeaters. This might come back to bite if you're going to use them for aggressive behavior, as the base defense ones might turn off when you only meant for the ones near you to turn off. Also seeing your test run of the grinding pit, I would have suggested making the area that the non-active grinders pass deeper, collecting bits so that the grinders don't have trouble with them while backing away; but if you're going to be pushing stuff into the grinding area from there, it wouldn't work.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, I'll have to keep that in mind if I have any forward positions that are reachable by antenna relay :) What I could do with the part where they go past is dig the pit deeper, put a platform on a piston there and push it up when they are going in, drop it before the grinders turn on, then return to the lifted position when the grinders reset... crazy complicated but would allow for the pushing forward of all those little bits each time :)
@Frank-ys4yz
@Frank-ys4yz 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think that messages transmitted by programmable blocks will be relayed. Only sandbags that are in the range of your antenna (You do not need to be in range of the sandbag's antenna) will receive the message. However, you can always write a script in the base and manually relay the message.

Gotta make a comment. Yes this is years ago so I realize that this is younger less experienced Splitsie but honestly surprised the lid for the grind pit wasn't just put on a piston that lowered from the roof using blast doors. Splitsie today would've had is spin flip and rotate into position! 😉

Quick thought - set one of the pistons to a quick speed, and the other two to ultra slow. This will mean it moves the first 3 meters very quickly, then slow to a crawl when doing the actual grinding. Might help you avoid clang and random pieces escaping without making the whole process take forever.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
In the future I'm just going to drop the pieces of salvage straight in the hole, so I think I'll set them all to a slow speed to be able to safely push the salvage into the covered part of the hole, but to make things more efficient I'm going to be piling a few pieces up so that I can grind a bunch at once rather than having it take a few minutes for each tiny piece :)

was thinking that a grinding pit with voxels would work best going down into a hole much better than it would going sideways into one having to push parts... it would require having to lift then slide to the side to allow more input, but you'd have far less issues in the long run i would think. but that's just my two cents. 8) loving the series!

Disclaimer - I never played space engineer so i don't know if this works, or has huge problems. I know you are already pushing it, which is interesting. But, is there any chance you can add some grinders to the back side of the grinding wall, either facing down or back. They might help you pick up some of the bits sitting on the ground. Additionally you might limit the bits flying around if you have the pistons extend/retract slower.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I think it's worth trying to move the pistons slower, as to the parts that ended up behind, I might be able to add some rear mounted grinders, I'll have to think about whether I've got enough room so they won't grind the back of the other grinders though :)

While drilling surface rocks, I noticed some ore actually phased into the rock voxel and stood on the ground voxel. I could see it inside with the expectator cam and actually collect it through the voxel surface. I think using the voxel as a containing wall might mean some bits and pieces phasing into the ground voxel (and falling into the planet), since the voxel is more like a hollow surface than actual "material volume". I don't know how much of it is a problem, since they **might** get cleared from game's memory once it reaches a certain distance inside the planet

Is there a way that you could make a sort of radar listening station that could control the transmit/receive script? So if an enemy vessel got within or left a certain range, that it would activate/deactivate the sandbags automatically? Also, I think it would be cool if you had a geosyncronous satellite in orbit over your valley that you could remote into and look around with the camera, kind of like a spy satellite.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure to be completely honest, it would have to be a script and I haven't got enough understanding of the limitations of the API to know if I can set that up, would be cool if it's possible though :) I'd like to do something like that, maybe a solar powered vehicle that can stay permanently up there would be cool - haven't tested what that requires to stay up through the night though, as I don't think you can see all that much at full zoom from the edge of the gravity field

i am not sure about the radar as i have never done scripts in SE , though i am sure someone out there could probably figure that one out, and for the satellite i think you should definitely do that would be interesting to see how you go about getting a satellite up into orbit as well as what the power requirements would be to maintain it indefinitely.

Nice work. I like your grinding pit's setup though there could be room for improvement. For starters, I think you should decrease the piston speed as it might fix the problem of extra bits flying about. I saw a comment that said it might be a good idea to have reverse facing grinders for any extra parts that bounced through the grinding wall. These could probably be placed just at the bottom row to pick up any extra pieces though you'd have to make sure it doesn't accidentally grind the pistons or conveyors. I also noticed a hole in your garage blast door. You seemed to look right at it when you were talking about the Goose and turret setups. As always I'm excited for the next episode!

What about putting a sensor in to detect subgroups that extend the pistons? That way you can just drop and go.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I've got a few upgrades for it that still need to be done, including systems to make it a lot simpler to operate, I'm inclined to leave it manually operated so I can dump a bunch of pieces in at the same time, that'll make it less onerous to watch and make sure it's not stuck on a piece of salvage etc

add some grinders on the bottom reverse side to catch the pieces that get behind it or would that grind off the piston?
@macgabhann1108

They would have to be deep so that there range did not reach the pistons or other grinders but it would get the extra bits that get left behind.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
I guess you could have them triggered by the same sensor as the other grinders since the piston is probably high enough, but not sure it'll be worth the time at the moment since I'd need a lot of grinders and the small parts would probably end up between them anyway :P

yea there is that problem though i did at one time come up with an idea for that problem but never tested it out maybe someday ill get around to building a grinding pit myself and get around to testing that out but for now it wont do me much good as it requires planetary gravity, though there is supposed to be a mod that makes gravity gens affect ships as well, though i am not sure how that would affect all my auto pilot drones and i am already running into issues where I need some sort of air traffic controller in space lol lost 4 fighters yesterday due to them trying to avoid each other as well as the under construction carrier and ended up smashing into my main ship

As a lazy engineer, I just swap tools with drills and let them dig their own hole. Gravity is there to be exploited in any design that involves random, independent bits.
@thewootpanda

I kinda expected a hole with drills facing upwards but as usual this guy went extra..
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
The drills will dig too large a hole and the system won't work, for the set up I went for here you need the voxels as tight against the drills as possible so that pieces are missed as little as possible. I tried the grinders facing upward in a pit and even with a lid there were pieces of salvage flying everywhere passing straight through the solid lid which is why I went a little crazy with the design :P
@lowrads3653
@lowrads3653 6 жыл бұрын
That's why I use a spinning design. Then you only have to restrain the radii, either as a single grid, or with waldoes. So long as most materials fall down to the bottom, close fits don't really make any difference as the principle goal is to be fault-tolerant.

Very nice episode. IN regards to the grinder pit lid, wouldn't it be possible to maybe have a sliding lid cover the pit? Coming in from the side, or above the grinders, and use catwalks above to walk on? Also the control center for it... Maybe move it to the side of the pit, then monitors across that show the camera views in the pit. Does monitors and cameras work in that fashion? Maybe it is to taxing on the processor to have them constantly record for the monitors. Maybe set it up with the pit so when in used the cameras switch on.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 жыл бұрын
Sadly you can't have monitors display what's seen by a camera, but I think having a little control area raised on the side could look nice :) A few people have suggested using airtight hangar doors for the cover, I think that might be the way to go since I haven't used them anywhere else and it's crazy simple (plus I've got an extra complicated upgrade idea)
@Pecomica
@Pecomica 6 жыл бұрын
I like it when you do it complicated. Your pit isn't what I was picturing in my head. First I thought it was going to be a pit with slanted walls that have the scrap slide down to a row of grinders or something, then I thought, maybe the grinders will be on pistons above and just press down. I do like your approach. Very nice.

If I comprehend it right anything connected to base by connector doesn't add to its mass (or its wrong ?). Or make the grid separated completely with battery and control it via Reciever Transmiter cript :P (thats a bit complex I think :) )

First of all thanks again for your help with my issiue of the "self building roket" and that you aswell cosider building a trailer like that for the Goose. mine works now but looks ugly as hell. ^^ i wished there would be new eppsiodes more often and even longer then this one but of course i know it already costs alot of time. As you flew in the pit to drop the Sandbag i thought wouldn't it be easier if you build a platform out of blast doors on pistons which will normally be extended so it makes an even floor in the hanger. you drop on anytjhing you wanna grind down and before you start grinding you retract that pistons. the grinders will push it behinf the platform anyway before they start grinding so it will not get destroyed ... but it might have the advantages that nothing can get destroyed if you drop it in and you won't need to fly in. aswell there would be no need for a "door" above what makes it harder to maneuver in there. all can be set on timers so it's just one button to push.

I like your idea about building a piston mounted floor, so much that I had a play around with the idea in creative to see if I could work my way around one problem: at the edge of the floor the transition between the piston floor and the voxel floor will have a gap, sadly I couldn't come up with a way to deal with this where the pieces of salvage weren't getting stuck :(

The way I do it is, in the example of building a door with two rotors on it, build the rotors opposing one another, then remove both of their rotor parts, build the door that fits in the gap and build 2 rotor parts on either end. Using a ship gently move the door in between the two rotors and then tell both of them to attach to the rotor parts... I suggest saving before hand as sometimes Space Engineers doesn't like it :P

The trouble with the wall is that the grinders throw pieces through a wall of blocks (they did that in the tests where I had a lid over a pit) I was hoping that the voxels worked better as they seem to, and that the grinders (being larger and being the source of the problem) would let fewer parts through to get scattered around the hangar :P

This just gave me another idea, I think I might add another command to the new sandbag for having transmit on the antenna toggleable so all the sandbags don't clutter my hud :)

I always think of the antennas as a HAM radio network because they operate basically the same way with the radio network in my area I can use my small handheld radio and talk over the entire north west coast because of the network and SE antennas work the same way another idea that could help clear your hud Splitsie is using the laser antennas instead see if you can figure out a way to set them up so that you have an entire laser antenna network with no blind spots and yea I know they can each only connect to one other one at a time

Are we talking about the butterball or the buttercup right now? ;)

I think of "The Buttercup" as "The Goldfish", due to its colour and Vector Thrust's wobbly swimming motion when maneuvering.
