Listening to the way Amber talked about her All-Stars win in season 40 and how she only won because "everyone hated the other person more" just about broke my heart. When Rob told Michele "If you win, you win. The end." it really struck me how he and Amber have probably had the same exact conversation before: about not feeling like you "deserved" to win because of all the backlash from fans. Does anyone remember the scene in Samoa during the premerge when Laura was visiting the Foa Foa camp, Natalie runs off with her to talk NOT about strategy, but just church, their dogs and families, you know normal stuff, and Liz tries to point this out to Russell while she's working on the fire, and Russell just brushes Liz off, calling her "stupid"? If the result of Samoa and all of Russell's flaws could be boiled down to a single scene, this is it. 1. No, Liz is not stupid for being concerned that Natalie is off socializing while she's stuck on fire duty. 2. Natalie knows exactly what she's doing without Russell pretending like it's his idea for her to do it. 3. This is just one example of likely several instances where Russell was openly complicit in Natalie culminating all of the social capital with their future jurors, and he STILL thought it was a good idea to take her to the end.
@eXponentia3 жыл бұрын

The more I lost at the finale due to bad RNG votes where I only had a winning shot if I bag in the bonus votes, the more I understood Russell's frustration of losing. I had to deal with people who literally have a zero chance to vote me to win simply because I'm not friends with them in real life and not respecting any form of strategy or even social play. Being friends with them? They still won't vote me to win, if their friend gets taken out they will ragequit together or they can vote someone else to win, there is no way to secure any votes because I'm dealing with bitter, bitter people. But in Russell's case, he treated everyone with little respect so he kinda deserved it. I treated players with respect at first, but after losing so many times to bitter kids, I just played cutthroat all the way, I came into games blindsiding and taking people out with idols early to give me a better shot to win. While I occasionally lost, my win ratio went up tremendously.

There are plenty of people who I wish had won survivor and didn't, but I still fully respect the people who did win those seasons. When you're on the island your priority is not to put on the best show for America if it is your on the wrong show. It is the Jury that decides if how you got to the end is worth the million. At the end of the day survivor is a social game, meaning that you have to make the people your playing with (not the people watching you at home) like you, every winner understood that.

Stephanie's fanbase loves to belittle the Guatemala result, but imho Stephanie really hurt her own game with some questionable decisions, and made it worse with her pathetic arguments at the final tribal. It honestly seemed more like Rafe was the one actually in control. 3. Bob. He was mainly saved by Sugar, and at the final tribal, he came off as quite a hypocrite, claiming that he played a "pure" game, rather than owning up to his moves. 4. Ben. I think the complaints about this win are warranted, given that the main reasons he made the end are idols being hidden worse than Rapunzel's hair, and a twist thrown in by surprise that eliminated the social part completely from the final 4.

It's easy to laugh at the "alliances are cheating" response viewers and some of the players had to Borneo, but context is important. This was before reality shows were a thing, and a lot of Survivor's marketing was not as a game, but a "social experiment," determining who was best suited to survive and craft a thriving society out in the wilderness. In short, who's the hardest worker, who has the best survivalist skills, and maybe things like who can unite the group/keep people's morale up. Of course, in hindsight, that would likely make for quite boring television. But this entire concept was new and some people thought folks banding together to boot out players regardless of their contributions to the tribe was against the "spirit" of the game as it was pitched. I agree that things worked out for the better, but I think the reaction was perfectly understandable at the time considering how the show was pitched, and there's a bit more too it than "lol, they thought strategy was immoral."

I comment this all the time on these types of videos, but I think it's SO painfully obvious that the editing team (and Jeff himself) absolutely hate 99% of their women winners. There's always one, and sometimes (like in South Pacific) as many as three, men who receive far more screentime and confessionals than the women who win. Not to mention any excuse to edit them to be as "stupid" or shallow as possible, the show ALWAYS takes advantage of this. Sometimes the stealthy edit makes sense, like with Tina or Dani when they were intentionally hiding much of their gameplay from the cameras and confessionals. But the vast majority of the time this is not the case - Jenna M absolutely crushing The Amazon despite being portrayed as a stupid shallow villain, Vecepia, Sophie, etc. all get this same treatment. Parvati, Kim, and Sandra (in PI, not HvV) are the only winning women who i'd say receive quite positive edits with generous amounts of screentime. I agree with this video about Amber and Natalie White being massively underserved by the edits in favor of the hyper macho and kind-of-sexist dude runner ups. Kaoh Rong is hard for me, because I personally wish Aubrey won, but Aubrey / Michelle / Cydney ALL give off such hard deserving-winner energy that I wish all three of them could've won the season in the same way I wish Yul and Ozzy could've shared the Cook Islands win. haha

The edge as a concept feels like a twist to help challenge beasts like Ozzy have a real shot at winning instead of completely being eliminated the first time they lose individual immunity. I know Ozzy won’t come back considering the current state of survivor and his recent personal career choices, but potentially players that are very similar to him (if that’s possible) could 100% use the edge as their strategy and win the game from it. Heck, I would say Chris actually fits that mold pretty well, though he didn’t exactly want to be voted out and go to the edge.

Personally, I think it's arrogant to say "_____ should have won." We weren't there! We're seeing a highlight reel of what happened over the course of 39 days (one that the editors can craft to tell the story they like). To say "_____ should have won" is to insinuate that we have a better idea of who should win than people who were out there, playing the game and living with the finalists
@Кинокультист3 жыл бұрын
Not really. Because we see players plans, we can understand their strategy better, and also we are less emotionaly attached to peope out there. Because of that we can see that people like Rodney played great games and people liks Sandra in HvV played terribly

@@Кинокультист But having just the right emotional attachment to the jurors--being close enough that they like you, but not so close that they feel betrayed by you--IS the social game. I think it is really understated in the show just how important the social game is (because, frankly, it doesn't make for super entertaining TV), but the reality is that people make decisions with their emotions, so being able to make the people on the jury WANT YOU TO WIN (at least, more than the people you're next to at the end) is an ESSENTIAL part of winning Survivor
@simplebutpowerful3 жыл бұрын
@@km_studios Well said, and for that reason I agree it's naive to state that any win is un-deserved. But I think it's also okay for the audience to disagree with the Jury. It's part of the appeal of the show.

@bigbuffguy95893 жыл бұрын
Michele wasn't that lucky. She won immunities and was well-liked, which kept her safe for most of the game. Aubry screwed up by voting out Jason instead of Michele at final 6. Even putting aside Joe's medevac, what happens if Michele just wins the final two immunity challenges? That happens all the time in Survivor. Also, if we're talking about luck, Aubry was lucky that Neal got medevaced to prevent her boot, and she was also lucky that it wasn't a final two.
@jayjasperjp3 жыл бұрын
@@bigbuffguy9589 First of all, Michele WAS insanely lucky. She only went to 6 tribal councils the entire season, the fewest of any winner. Second of all, it’s been confirmed that the plan right after the merge was to split the votes between Neal and Aubry to flush out Neal’s idol. Neal would’ve gotten 4 votes, Aubry 3, which means Neal would’ve been voted out if he didn’t play his idol. Third of all, the reason Jason was voted out at final 6 was because Nick had told Aubry before he was voted out that if Jason reached the end, Nick would vote for him because he started out on the worst tribe (Brawn) and still managed to make it to the end. In addition, Scot and Julia were on the jury at that point and they also would’ve voted for Jason, which means Aubry made the right choice voting him out. Aubry also considered Jason more of a physical threat than Michele to win the last few immunities. What screwed Aubry was the Joe medevac. If that didn’t happen Michele would’ve been voted out at final 5, Cydney at final 4, leaving a final 3 of Aubry/Tai/Joe in which Aubry wins.

That is why I don't like when Idoled Out rips on a someone for loyalty or "not playing the game." I don't want to see heartless gamebots. It hasn't gotten to that point yet but when you look back on Micronesia Parvati and think, "you know she was actually pretty loyal," you know it is heading that way. I've actually done that. Parvati is sort of known for being a backstabber but she really only backstabbed one person and she was almost in tears when it happened. I think people confuse Parvati laughing at her enemies being eliminated to her reactions when she pulls off a blindside against an ally. Now people "copy" her but they are laughing at their own allies being betrayed which is a bad look. Also, people forget Parvati straight up told James that she wanted to go to the finals with all girls. He didn't take it well but she risked blowing up her own game just to not blindside the guy. Sure it was basically a risk free move but a gamebot would tell you to blindside him just incase he has an idol.

My guess is you were rooting for Chris because he received an unusually high concentration of confessionals while on the Edge. I didn't understand why they bothered showing us so much Edge - and so much Chris - until of course he reentered, and then it made sense. The edit was designed to make Chris's 13 days of game play, as well as his 26 days on the Edge, as palatable as possible. At first I felt Gavin was robbed, but now I'm at peace with it because at least Chris set the bar super-high for any future Edge returnees. Of which there will hopefully be none, because that format is trash and needs to go the way of the dodo (i.e., go Extinct. lol). Survivor with EoE simply isn't Survivor imo... it's a different game, which I don't love.

Just look at the votes, the only people that voted for Gavin were either hardly on EoE or not at all. Being out on EoE for all that time, you know they had to have discussed this. Not to mention people like Reem who were out there on EoE from the beginning never played with or even met Gavin or Julie. I think Chris's fire making play was all flash and likely unnecessary as even if Rick Devins was in the FTC I still think Chris takes it because the EoE people made some kind of agreement or deal with each other."
@msnmpn73 жыл бұрын
I don't necessarily think that's true though. In his Ponderosa video, the jury makes it overwhelmingly clear that they were rooting for Devens to win. He most likely still wins if Gavin or Julie eliminate Devens, but this is the only shot he has to take down the literal biggest threat in the game, so he has to take that shot himself. Plus he likely knows that whichever of the two of them won that fire making challenge would win the game, so he would likely rather face him head on and lose than risk having someone else lose it for him.

I think Chris Underwood's win is a perfect example of why the Edge twist doesn't work. They're effectively playing an inverted version of survivor where instead of every few days someone new gets added to the game and the thing that makes it hard for you to get juries to vote for you isn't a factor. Redemption Island, while kind of a lame twist (being voted out should mean you are out) at least functionally works within the game. You are constantly at risk of elimination if you're at Redemption Island because there's a challenge to determine if you're dead or alive every three days and you're practically there all alone. Edge has no risk attached to it. Just stay on the island with all the other vote offs until the challenge and try to win a reentrance
