Season 2 of Navigating Narcissism premieres on March 16th!
Terra Newell's name became nationally known after she killed her stepfather in self-defense; John Meehan known from Dirty John. Earlier this season, Terra's mother, Debra, came on the show and shared her experience during that tumultuous time. In this episode, we hear directly from Terra, who shares her point of view. While she experienced massive trauma, she learned how to heal and help others. Listen to part 1 to learn about Terra and fellow survivor Collier Landry’s story.
I want to hear from you, too. Have a toxic topic you want me to explore? Email me at askdrramani@redtabletalk.com. I just might answer your questions on air.
Guest Bio:
Terra Newell has been called “one of the biggest badasses of true crime.” She killed “dirty” John Meehan, a con man and serial predator, in self-defense at age 25. Since then, she’s shared her dramatic story on global platforms to raise awareness around domestic abuse. She is the heroine of episode six of the Dirty John podcast and has been interviewed for Dateline, Dirty John: The Dirty Truth, Dr. Oz, The Skinny Confidential, KTLA, and numerous additional outlets. She’s currently working alongside fellow survivor Collier Landry with a new podcast, The Survivor Squad. Terra also loves to help others by coaching and advocating for victims.
Collier is the creator and subject of the Discovery+ documentary A Murder in Mansfield. He is the host of the Moving Past Murder podcast and upcoming podcast The Survivor Squad with co-host Terra Newell (Dirty John).

Terra wasn't given near enough respect in any of the dramatized shows/ docs. Terra should have been featured more than the monster. She's the hero of the story. She is badass. Much love and respect for Terra

Yep. I believe Tara is a hero in so many ways. I’m sorry to say this, though, all this evil experience could’ve been avoided, if her mom had followed common sense, and heeded the red flags 🚩🚩which were plenty of. For example: When they were driving the car, her mom and John in the front driving, and I’m sure he put the baby lock before Tara could get out of the car 🚩🚩 With all due respect to her mom (who’s been married 5x, incl. to John), that she exposed her children to this psychopathic monster. Tara loved her mom so much, she wanted to be in her mom’s life, and tried appeasing her mom, but, here came this John guy, stalking her, and trying to kill Tara.

Wow. Debbie said in her interview on this show that she was certain John meant to kidnap Terra and never meant to kill her. She repeated this. Obviously he tried to kill her! He stabbed her multiple times. The mom was sadly in so much denial. It makes me wonder how much denial any of us are in.

Her zombie stab was brilliant and effective, as a small female I recognize that hitting in the correct spot can save your own life. Lesson learned. I'm grateful she had the wherewithal and courage to protect herself and got him in the eye. What a story no on wants, she handled it with strength and bravery, I hope her heart heals. Throughout this podcast , Terra helped me learn sso much about my own behavior responses to years of fear knowing someone is looking over your shoulder planning your mental or physical demise. She was not crazy. Neither am I, it seems. I caught myself rocking Terra and myself the entire time with difficulty breathing. She is a blessed, dear heart, with tremendous tenacity and faith. May peace fill her remaining years and have moments of joy each day. God sent her openness to me.

These podcasts finally popped up for me to notice. I understand the term generational abuse and trauma. It is a relief when the abusers die. A couple toxic relatives passed on and I felt relief. I am unfortunately having to deal somewhat with a covert malignant abusive sibling that's in charge of the wills. The blessing is that I finally connected the dots and realize the lengths it has gone to to be the author of chaos in my life. I didn't suspect anything, then couldn't believe my own eyes that he poisoned me, then found it very difficult to tell anyone. Be didn't know I saw what he did and I never confronted him about that incident. There have been other incidents. Its also very difficult to prove in law as whatever he used mimicked other symptoms. I decided to go no contact, once there was an obvious provable pattern, it became apparent he was trying to steal from me even though he supposedly has a very lucrative career. These types are pathologically envious and stop at nothing to harm their target. I think it is best to go on the offensive and be prepared covertly. I did finally get to the point where I reported him to the police. These things do not operate alone. They plot with like minded criminals. Of course he has discredited me and I know he operated in tandem with abusive relatives to discredit me to my parents. There was abuse throughout the maternal family and yes...generational. so glad I made the decision to go no contact. There's no going back, and that's a relief too. Don't feel guilty about killing these creep nightmares from hell. They don't stop. They escalate their abuses and they always harm others. I married a psychopath and got out quick. So yes I finally learned boundaries and self worth. These pieces of shit most often enlist others to set you up and help. You did the world a favour.

Oh my word! I was following this case when it aired on TV and these girls are just amazing! What a blessing these daughters are looking out for their mom to the very end. I dated a guy like this but he actually had money, it was from an insurance claim but he was rich above anyone’s imagination. My daughter hated him, she was ten years old at the time and she knew he was horrible. She used to yell at him and say “ You’re not going to marry my mother!” I only recently found out he used to slap her hand and say “you better not tell your mother or I’ll do it to her “! I was totally shocked! She’s 19 now and she barely calls or talks to me. These people are so sick. I’m very happy for Terra’s quick thinking and courage. And I’m glad she’s ok. Love her-she’s a rockstar!❤

Having survived being attacked and fighting for my life, Terri handled the situation admirably. She killed a grown man because he would of killed her. How long did it take her to recover? I never involved the Police because of my husband, and he acted like my attack never happened, a year later I went to pieces and was diagniosed with CPTSD. Talking about generational trauma was interesting because I recognise this in my family too. Thank you for presenting this story it has been helpful to me.

Cash was a great dog. He sensed a very dark danger nearby and warned Terra even before John revealed himself. In addition, this dog was so chill that within seconds of the life-threatening fight's end, he was eating Taco Bell from a bag dropped by a truly evil guy he had just helped terminate. That's serious swag. Rin Tin Tin? Ho hum. Lassie? yawn Cash? His loyalty and courage have been documented in the nation's major newspapers.

I’m in the middle of rewatching Dirty John and rewatched some of Deborah’s interviews.. I still feel she didnt grasp the enormity of the situation of that day - that her daughter fought for her life! In interviews just like in the show, she’s still somewhat dismissive of the reality of what John could have done to her family. I just don’t understand her. Deborah confirmed that the way she was depicted in the show is real, and not only was she dismissive of their warnings then, she is dismissive in a different way now that everything is over. Dr. Ramani, u should help her because the way she speaks of him still isn’t real. Deborah hasn’t recovered from the relationship yet. Terra is a hero!! People who criticize Terra should be ashamed of themselves. They lack common sense & the ability to listen, and not just hear words, but LISTEN to the severity of the trauma this poor girl went through & came out as a hero!!

Can you think of any normal person who would even be THINKING about going to a concert after such a traumatic event, let alone go to it?! And how about the fact that she felt the need to keep repeating her name and that her stepdad tried to kill her… no one’s gonna talk about that either?? It’s as though she tried to convince herself of that narrative by saying it over and over again. In other interviews she shares that her sister called her to warn her about John being in town. Why didn’t they take precautions?? I find it odd that he just so happened to be at her apartment looking like a homeless guy working on his car. Obviously crazy things happen in life, but this + all the other weird details of the story just don’t add up to me. Also, she “channeled” The Walking Dead while stabbing her stepdad 13 times. 🚩🚩🚩🚩

@@kianicole001 I highly doubt she would have needed to stab the guy 13 times in order to get him to leave her alone (or to kill him if a self-defense murder were truly necessary).

I don’t get how she could be concerned with going to a concert just hours after killing a man 🤔

My only guess is, that Terra was in shock, and that her survival instincts had kicked in. Why blame the victim? What good could it have done for Terra, or anybody else, by her not going to the concert, except, keeping her in shock? Wouldn’t it have then be letting the psychopath celebrate from beyond the grave? The guy was probably already in hell. So, why grieve for him? Do malignant narcs, and psychopaths ever have any or enough remorse to repent before they die?

@@jeanie5074 going to a concert after supposedly being attacked and nearly kidnapped and killed by your stepdad and then killing HIM in “self-defense” equals survival instinct to you?? Do you think it was “survival instinct” when Casey Anthony went to a party shortly after she killed her daughter?? I’ve been through some very significant traumas in my life and there’s no way I could even think about going to a concert soon after any of them. I don’t see Terra as a victim, nor her mother. The Newell family is just as sick as John Meehan and they all played a part in this “Dirty John” mess. And now Terra and her mother are profiting from and enjoying the “fame” of their self-inflicted tragedy. I’ve watched hours of Terra’s interviews and her story changes. For example, in her Dr. Phil interview, she says she heard John gasp after the initial stab. In another interview, she said she heard him gasp after 11 stabs. She also says in some interviews that she tried running away from him immediately, and in others she says she ran after he tried to stab her. She claims she put her purse over her chest, otherwise he would have stabbed her in the heart. Don’t you think a 6 foot+ man would have been able to either stab right through the purse or push it out of the way?? How did this 5 foot woman manage to kill a man as big as John?? She’s never mentioned being trained in self-defense or martial arts, so I really doubt she had that going for her. There are more inconsistencies, such as claiming that she kicked the knife out of his hand and other times saying that it fell out of his hand. I find it strange that she kept repeating her name to herself over and over after the incident and “my stepdad tried to kill me.” That’s a good indication of someone who’s trying hard to convince themselves of something. Why doesn’t she mention this part in ALL of her interviews?? And why does she leave out the part about her sister calling her the day of the attack to warn her John was in town?? She says she got home from work 30 minutes earlier than normal that day and noticed the gate was broken. She also says she thought he was “just some homeless guy.” It’s hard for me to believe that he would have broken the gate in broad daylight without anyone intervening, and that she’d think nothing of some random homeless dude working on his car in her secured parking garage.

@@jeanie5074 the guy was obviously a sicko, but she murdered him and that’s just the truth. Self-defense is meant to deter a threat, not to stab for a total of 13 times. After he gasped and collapsed on her, she could have gotten away and called police. If he were truly intent on kidnapping and murdering her that day, he would have gone to jail. Was it really necessary to kill him?? She and her family could have put a protection plan in place in order to stay safe from him if they were worried about him harming them once he got out of jail - IF he would have ever gotten out of jail. He had a long history of violence and crime and he probably would have had a long sentence, especially for attempted kidnapping and murder.

@@jeanie5074 and something is really off-putting about the way she smiles and laughs while recounting the story, especially in earlier interviews not that long after it happened. I just don’t trust her. I saw red flags pretty quickly and I have a bad gut feeling about her. She comes off as shallow and phony to me. And not very bright.

Sociopath is not a clinical term and according to Sam Vaknin, PhD psychopaths (ASPDs) do experience anxiety, albeit differently than neurotypicals.

Sam Vaknin said so himself in an interview, that he himself is a narcissist. I believe what Dr. Ramani says, over what Sam Vaknin says, as Sam is always kind of a nasty guy. Dr. Ramani is not. She’s like one of us, except, with the degreed expertise, and experience she has.

@@jeanie5074 yep, he’s a twice diagnosed (self-aware) narcissist and also a professor of psychology. He’s the one who started the movement on narcissism we know today and coined the terms narcissistic abuse, victims of narcissistic abuse, no contact, hoovering back in the 90s. His work builds off of other psychology greats such as Melanie Klein, Otto Kernberg, Hervey Kleckley, Judith Herman, etc., and he’s made tremendous original contributions to the field. (Judith discovered CPTSD and Sam has teamed up with her.) I’ve followed his work since 2016 and I find him to be the most reliable and valuable source for information on narcissism/narcissistic abuse and other personality disorders, aka post-traumatic conditions.
