Sustainable Harvest of Goldenseal

Goldenseal is an Appalachian herb with anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties due to its chemical components of hydrastine and berberine. While it tends to grow in colonies, it is still important to harvest this plant sustainably. By allowing the younger plants to mature, and leaving some mature plants in place during harvest to produce seed, you are ensuring the health and growth of your forest farming bed for future harvests.

The roots go for $30 per pound and $7 per pound for dried tops. In West Virginia at least.

shouldn't you keep some of the large rooted plants for seed production and breeding? if the thing you want to get out of it is more root. If you take all the big ones out doesn't that mean over time you will get smaller rootS? I'm a little confused

No she is doing it exactly the right way. The don't propagate easily from seed. The easiest best way is vegetatively.
