George RR Martin's CRYPTIC Winds of Winter UPDATE | Is The Winds of Winter Coming or CANCELLED?

Game of Thrones Season 8 was a disaster, but that isn't going to stop HBO. As we approach the 10 year anniversary of the premiere of the show. HBO decided to post a 'Winter is Coming' tweet and it sparked calls to remake Season 8. Just by coincidence, George RR Martin gave us an update of sorts where he stated the same thing in a rather cryptic post on his status. Which lead some people to believe he may be close to finishing The Winds of Winter OR we may never you see it. Either way George sounds DONE, and I don't mean finished with the book. So is most of the fandom.

It's pretty rich that George and his publishers expect fans to be really interested in his equivalent of "Farmer Giles of Ham" when he isn't even done making his "Lord of the Rings" yet. Aren't prequels supposed to fill in the gaps of a _complete_ story? This is the only franchise I've ever heard of that had an expanded universe before it even had a proper original story.
@kazikek2674
@kazikek2674 3 жыл бұрын
I mean, he can work on his world however he wants and in any order he wants as long as his publishers agree to it and he understands what kind of criticism he may generate with it. I honestly think at this point he is either too trapped in perfectionism when it comes to finishing the next book or too tired of that 'part of his world' in general. It no longer makes him happy to write about it, and editing and revising it is a chore (which are double unpleasant when you're his age, tired, and with other worries), so he directs his attention elsewhere.

@@Methyll - Well, taking HBO's offer meant lots of money and I understand how alluring that is. But he obviously gave the dumpsters a carte blanche and had no power and control. And they messed it up with the network's allowance. Maybe witnessing the devastation made him stop writing. I could understand the frustration but exactly BECAUSE of that I would have wanted my series to have a propper ending; possibly totally different than the badly written fanfiction. It's beyond me how Martin can just let these embodiments of incompetence and indifference ruin his world famous creation.

@Anjelica Snorcket So, the ending will be the same, but since there may be a few different plot points along the way, the ending won't be the same? How delusional are you? No one said the ending would be _identical._ Literally everyone you're attempting to contradict has pointed out that the ending will be the same, i.e. Daenerys will go batshit and kill everyone in King's Landing and Bran will end up as the king. That's it. And that's almost certainly _EXACTLY_ how GRRM plans to end the books. If you want to be pedantic, fine. Just don't expect the rest of us to listen to your pedantry and tell you you're right.
@frocat5163

@Anjelica Snorcket Are you a troll or a moron? Or both? The topic at hand is clearly _the_ ending, i.e. the resolution of the major plotline in the entire series: Who will sit on the Iron Throne when everything's said and done. Are you so stupid you're incapable of following that basic premise? No one was talking about the resolution of the Lady Stoneheart plotline. Or the Dornish plotlines. Or the Hound's. Or Arya's. Or any of the many other plots. But, apparently you believe that by saying something irrelevant about all of the side-plots, you're somehow making a profound observation about how the series will end, despite literally no one but you bringing that up. When discussing the ending of _The Lord of the Rings,_ do you also make sure to cover the resolution of Prince Imrahil's plotline? How about Dain Ironfoot? Glorfindel? Then again, if you're someone who thinks eight sentences is "a novel," it's pretty obvious you're not really capable of holding an intelligent discussion with anyone.

In all the discussions about Martin and finishing the last two books, everyone has missed something that I remember very distinctly. The HBO producers did an interview and one of the questions was with regards to the possibility that the series would run out of stories if Martin did not finish the books. What they said was Martin had specific contractual deadlines to have his manuscripts in to his publisher so HBO could use them to write the series. The interviewer asked if Martin had met the deadlines and they said he had for all SEVEN books. This was around when Martin had a snit about HBO not following his story. I later read a piece in an English paper that quoted Martin’s publisher that he did have the manuscripts for the last two books, but Martin likes to revise things and had not given him permission to publish them. I had also seen somewhere that Marin’s contract allowed HBO to develop their own ending if he did not meet the manuscript deadlines, which is actually typical for such deals per an entertainment lawyer I know. The impression I had at the time was Martin did submit manuscripts to meet his contract terms (far too much cash at risk) but he wanted the stories to go in a different direction. I think HBO pressured Martin to produce a story line they could film and he has hated it and simply refuses to publish it. I also wonder if HBO doesn’t prefer he not publish the books which will be very different and they think it would hurt them. This casts a different light on his new 5 year deal. One that sounds rather suspect since the man is utterly unable to produce anything like what they need. Martin clearly has his own agenda and he never really cared much about the fans when his interests diverged. IF you want to see the two books issued, there is in fact one thing that just might work. I saw an interview with him from around the time the first book was published. He was asked who was the author he wanted to be compared to and he immediately said JRR Tolkien. He admired JJRRT for building a complete world with extensive attention to every detail. In reality Tolkien finished his works and thus it became something that is truly a saga. Martin should be asked if his incomplete series can stand up to the legacy of Tolkien if he fails to publish the last books. I would be very curious to see how he reacts to that because the simple truth is his legacy collapses without a complete series.

@Charlotte M. Ellett I can offer a recommendation if you would be interested. It's not new, but it is complete: Daniel Abraham's _The Dagger and the Coin_ series. It has a lot in common with _ASoIaF_ in that it is more about the politics of a fantasy setting than a band of heroes on a quest. Just as _ASoIaF_ draws heavily from the Wars of the Roses for inspiration, so too _TDatC_ draws from a real historical conflict (I won't say which one so as to avoid spoilers). It has fascinating and complex characters and different subplots, but it manages to avoid becoming a sprawling mess, and, while fairly long, it remains an economically told tale through to the end, so if you like _ASoIaF_ but wish the author had the discipline to finish it, you would very likely like _TDatC_ too. It might be worth a look.

If he would have just finished it he could be spending his twilight years... not worrying about writing and laying out on a beach somewhere. The fame went to his head and he spent years traveling around the world going to conventions while his work wasn’t finished. He banked on HBO and DnD to finish it well, but he overestimated them. Now he’s stuck with an unfinished book series that’s damaging his reputation and the only conclusion to that work is an uneven adaption and a travesty the entire world wants to forget.

How it translates to storytelling will vary from person to person. George does like to make his works as without error as possible, and given the sheer amount of storylines he has to wrap up, coupled with all his other pursuits, it's no small wonder his last two books are taking over a decade to come out. He's basically working on both at once over just one followed by the other, and even should we suffer the misfortune of him passing before his work comes out, he's probably left the description of the remaining plot of the series and prototype assorted plot threads of the characters within it somewhere safe for just that occasion.

One is 'clothing the skeleton', where an author first connects all the plot point bones of a story and then fills them out with description and character until you have a full body of story. The other is 'carving the statue' where a large body of work is carefully edited, cut down, rearranged, and reworded to produce a coherent and consistent piece of art. In essence, one engages the logical mind first and then the creative mind second, while the other does it the other way around. "It all depends on how you get there." Thank you so freaking much for that. Here's what so many fail to understand. The problem wasn't the ending itself (the collection of resolutions for the major & supporting characters/plotlines). The problem was entirely a matter of execution. And yes, while there will be notable differences due to the various changes (both big and small) the tv series made when adapting the source material to screen (in conjunction with all the material D&D had to come up with when they surpassed the books), the "broad strokes" (at least for the central characters) will be the same. More or less. GRRM has reiterated this on multiple occasions. He has also repeatedly stated that changing a story's ending due to leakage/reception ultimately ruins said story. Even if he wanted to change the ending (significantly or entirely) it would be nigh impossible given the sheer immensity of the saga's content and the fact that he's already 5 books into his 7 part series. It's disheartening that so many people would be dissatisfied with the ending regardless of how well executed/developed/set up it was. You're 100% entitled to your subjective preferences but a huge swath of the fanbase seem to be under the impression that the ending is intrinsically objectively bad. A claim for which they have no basis for and highlights an almost fundamental misunderstanding they have of this series. I don't mean to sound arrogant /dismissive but that's just what I've observed. I hope more than anything that GRRM sticks to his guns and refuses to cave in. It would break my heart beyond repair to see him compromise his own story/intended original ending because a couple of crappy showrunners did such a poor job delivering it to the masses before he could. I'd rather he not finish the series at all.

The show was so really great and had the potential to go down as one of the greatest shows ever and really could of had another 4 or 5 really good seasons. To think how something so popular just was waisted like this. Reading all the books watching every episode a couple of times ,maybe the first 6 a half dozen times I only watched the last 2 seasons once and all the KZbin videos, to think all that time waisted it's crazy.

When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When Dany's womb quickens again, and she bears a living child. Then we will get the next book, and not before.

Aw, Gary looks so passionate about this book. I remember when I used to have actual passion for the franchises I was a fan of. That was a long time ago...
