Suzi Q is quite the star of my generation. We loved her (still do) in Australia. A heap of hit records. She also played Leather Tuscadero on the US TV show Happy Days. She is American (from Detroit) but got her break in the UK, big there, Australia NZ and Europe, sadly not so much in the US. Lip synching? Yep, they all had to do it to get on the TV shows from the 50s through the 70s. It was just the time Nick. To hear Suzie’s quiet voice try “Stumblin In’ her duet with Chris Norman of Smokie. She also did it later on RocKwiz with Chris Cheney of The Living End

I heard the musician's union required it. Bands hated it.

Suzi can sing, and further down the track in her career she slowed down the tempo and did some lovely duets and almost ballad type songs. These dinky little routines for tv shows were often lip synced because the stations preferred it. She was and still is a really down to earth person who relates well to her audiences.

She is American, and she comes from Detroit. She had most of her success in the UK and Oz. She did do a stint in Happy Days in the 70s.

This was nearly 50 years ago and she was one of the first acts to even put out video clips for her music. Name an artist in the last 50 years who hasn't lip-synched in their official music videos. I'll wait... ;)

Don't forget it's an old video, often the video is not in sync with the vocals when it's been copied over the years

Suzie is fantastic! I've seen her live a few times, the most recent time being just last year! Considering that she's getting up there in her age, she's definitely still got it! She goes hard and knows how to put on a show! Fun music and great crowd participation! She definitely wouldn't be lip singing, being an older video the sound is probably just out of sync slightly!

I saw Suzi live at Festival Hall Melbourne and she rocked the roof off that place, this is a pop music show and nearly all of them had the artist mime because back then it was easier for production and broadcast, don't forget these shows could have 6, 7 or more bands in one show so micing up 7 bands with different drum kits and amps and making them sound good would be impossible.

Suzi is a legend. She can sing and is great live. This video is not a good indication of what Suzi can really do vocally as it's lip sync for a TV show back in 1973. She's had many great songs over the years and paved the way for female rockers.

I love Suzi Q & she has other songs that show off her vocals better than this 1 (as fun as it is). I think she'd have preferred to perform live but a lot of music TV shows back in the day couldn't cater to a live performance. I wouldn't judge her on this one.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4jYf2aEh9hlqNU Nic here is a more recent and live performance by the original guitar rock chick, Suzie Q (she paved the way for the likes of Lita Ford and Joan Jett, who started off together in The Runaways). Suzie is still rocking! 😎👍🎸🎤🎶

Some 70s tv shows were pretty much known to not be live. I think the voice may even be her doubled, recorded separately. Sounds like the studio release. I'd call this pop rock. Always been fond of the song, thought it was about a race car or something but reached 48 years and understood differently. Part of the rock I grew up with was almost purposely simplified and straightened. The song writers were old dude's and funny that you mentioned Tina Turner because, together with Holly Knight, they wrote Better Be Good To Me. Suzi Quatro was a Happy Days rebel and what sixteen year old wouldn’t have some phantasies. Even though the sound is contrived to be a hit at the time she still genuinely could perform.

A friend of mine was a session musician in the 70s in Australia and he said bands rarely played live. Everybody was lip-syncing on tour.

Back in the 60s and 70s every one of the tv shows preferred lip sync for several reasons. 1) They could control the volume vs the band 2) They knew the lyrics in the studio version were acceptable to the censors of the period 3) Many artists of the time would show up drunk, stoned or both and couldn't be trusted to perform the song correctly

A lot of early music tv shows played recorded soundtracks and had the bands lip sync. Countdown in Australia was notorious for it in the early years.... you could always tell, there was no amps, the instruments were not wired up - I guess they were about showcasing a singers latest work on the shows and they wanted to sell records.... maybe some people could sound good in a studio and crap live. I saw Suzi twice here in Australia, and each time I walked away from the show happy.

Lipsync was the way it was in those days. Too much hassle to change sets between bands. Trust, I've seen her and she rocks better live. Don't judge on one video which is drowned out by studio clapping

Don't get hung up on the lip sync. A lot of these music shows made the artists do it back in the day because it was easier for them to set it up etc. I've seen her live many times and she's great! No lip syncing at all!

It's a pity that the video recommended for you react to Suzi was not a live performance because I know that you find lip-syncing really off-putting. As I'm sure you'll get sick of reading in comments, lip-syncing was required of all performers when they appeared 'live' on television popular music shows back in those days. I've heard that there were performers who refused to appear on those type of shows because of that, and I often saw performances where the vocalists (and sometimes instrumentalists) were obviously exaggerating being 'out of sync', presumably to highlight that they were not really performing live in the studio.

Tina Turner is awesome but she’s not the Queen of rock. She didn’t get her own band together like Suzi. Tins joined Ike Turners band as a backup singer. Suzi had No1 hits hits in the UK, Australia and in some parts of Europe snd Japan in her own right. She toured the world under her name and then went on to have many hits throughout her career. She is the lead singer of a rock band playing her bass guitar. Suzi was born in Detroit but got offered a record contract in England and never went back.
