Happy to be corrected here... I believe the Manual says to check the chain tension / deflection when the bike's on the side stand. On the side stand the rear suspension is carrying some weight and is slightly compressed. On the centre stand the rear suspension is fully extended. If it's 'right' when on the centre stand it's going to be way too tight on the side stand. Just a thought.

An interesting thought Michael. I have always checked the chain tension on the centre stand. But, I must admit I do not know if that is the correct way to do it. It is just always how I have done it. Some bikes do not have a centre stand so it would have to be done on the side stand or a paddock stand. I have just read a few of my workshop manuals for several different bikes. They all say the bike must be placed on the centre stand or a paddock stand. So i suppose that is the correct way. Thanks for your thoughts.

The gs manual does say on the side stand, but I personally think it's because most people on gs's end up taking out the center stand, as its puller constantly hits your foot. I did take mine off, as I was slightly opening it during turns and scrapping it.

best way to check the Chain-tension is, you sit on your Bike, and check with the left hand and wiggle up and down the Bike, that the Chain has ever a freeplay. Hope you can understand my poor English, sorry

Hi there are a lot of methods for getting a chain back to life. if i was doing it now I would soak it in a quality engine cleaner, (not an O ring chain though) and leave it for a day or so. then give it a really good clean as you would normally do. Then Immerse in a pan of warmed grease. Allow the grease a chance to penetrate into the chain innards. Hang up and allow to cool. Re-fit, use the bike then re-adjust and then use normal chain grease as normal.
