Someone on the curly subreddit told me I needed to stick to the term wavy and not use the word curl when I quite recall saying on wash day 2a-2c curls form, so they know it’s wavy. Also, why gatekeep the word curl? It’s not straight, and that’s what I want to call it! I’m aware they might want to not confuse people because they think wavy styling is different from “curly” styling, but I clearly say my pattern type, so it’s not confusing.

I agre, why gatekeep? And the worse part is when those snobs are actually salespeople at the store selling curly wavy products… i get looks and questions on why do I even ask. I tried asking for samples of Jessicurl products and the sales lady with type 4 curls looked at me like I was robbing the other ladies 🤪🤷🏻‍♀️ i started going in with a hat, so they would not be able to tell 🙈

I totally understand the curly vs wavy conundrum. I have 2b-c waves but also 3a-b, and the odd 3c, curls. That’s why I love how you say wavy-curly and you’ve helped me embrace my natural hair and to know we all have good and bad days, that doesn’t make my hair any less beautiful. Thank you Courtney!

I agree about the refresh, gurl. That's just a ploy by the product manufactures to get you to buy more product, or to buy it more frequently. It's a total scam. I can have a good curl day, and because I wear a CPap (which means I can't sleep in a silk cap), my hair is fairly flat the next day. To revive? I squirt it down with water, scrunch, and let it air dry. And then (yikes), I brush it out. What I get is a volume of beautiful texture, some waves, and that's okay with me. Would I like the defined curls? Sure, but I know my hair and it's not going to happen. I just go with what it is and if it's not wavy/curly, it's still lovely and healthy. And honestly, the best part is that the silver shines! I love my silver.

I'm convinced that CPAP is the enemy of wavy/curly hair! And I have yet to find any of these videos that address the issue. Like you, I usually end up spraying it with water and scrunching it. What I do from there depends on my mood, but it often does include brushing it out! Then, I will usually run my fingers through it and fluff it up a bit. That loosens it up so that I have nice soft waves and that's okay. I just recently decided to try sea salt spray and it is great for refreshing the curls!

A couple of things I would add to that are that you can't use shampoos with sulfates except to clarify and that silicones are bad for your hair. Since I went back to using sulfates and silicones, my hair has improved tremulously.

Just recently started leaning into my new hair pattern. (Went wavy on me at 48.) I REALLY appreciate hearing that wavy is not inferior to curly!! Used to torture myself with perms and curling irons. Then gave in to stick straight hair. Then...voila. A delayed wish? Now it feels like I am trying to understand and get to know my hair again. Thank you for you videos!

I just turned 42 and found out a couple of weeks ago that my stick straight hair has gone curly wavy! I had no idea until I got 24 inches cut off and the stylist says to me, "oh look, now that all of that length is off your curls and waves have come back! Bet you had fun with those as a kid"...um, what? I looked at her in shock and said, "I have always wanted curly hair!" Menopause definately has some benefits!

Wavy hair is beautiful. I have curly hair and do not follow the curly girl method. I also take good care of my hair and brush style my curls which literally takes me 5 minutes to style. I then diffuse my hair until it’s 85% dry then let the rest air dry as I put in my makeup. This way I don’t walk around with wet roots. I sometimes wish that I had straight or even wavy hair, but I’ve learned to love and accept my hair and myself, the way I am. Love and accept yourself no matter what type of hair you have.

Thank you for representing us “wavies”! It is super frustrating to deal with comments/judgements/misconceptions about our hair type. For years, thought I was just cursed with “messy” hair. Around my 50th birthday, I discovered the wavy/curly community and learned ways to work with my hair (besides just straightening it or using an iron to form “perfect” curls). I’m so grateful for folks like you who show us how to embrace our naturally wavy uniqueness! 😊

Oh the gatekeeping drives me crazy too. I have just decided that wavy hair is beautiful and it doesn’t matter what someone else thinks about my hair. It’s my hair and is exactly the way God designed it. And for once in my life I am finally at peace with my hair. Yes, curly is beautiful but so is wavy. I really try hard to ignore the curly hair police as they must be at a sad place in their life with too much time on their hands, anyways!

Your hair is beautiful. I have tight curls in the back, but don't get all envied up just yet....the front and one side looks like yours and the other side is curly wavy. And, I don't have thick hair. I envy the people with thick hair and that appear to have a curl pattern that almost matches all over their head. It's so frustrating trying to style it when it looks thin, wavy and kinky all on one head! I need to get a dry cut simply because the back is kinky and shrinks up and then the sides don't and looks longer and odd compared to the front.

Ya know, it used to bother me so badly that my hair wasn't perfectly straight or perfectly curly either one. I hated it for the longest time. Other people would compliment me on my hair and even then I hated it lol. But now that I'm on my own hair journey I am embracing the waves and loving how it looks after being styled. And to your point about taking a break from styling: I spent like almost 2 decades doing nothing to my hair other then washing, conditioning, scrunching it with no product in it, and air drying it. My hair was so incredibly healthy because of having no product or dye in it and no heat so when I did start actually styling it a couple months ago I had beautiful results right off the bat. I'm kind of glad that I was lazy with my hair and waited until I found a styling routine that actually benefited my hair before I started putting any effort in lol. And actually I've noticed that I get even less frizz in my hair if I just air dry it rather than diffuse it. But my hair is fine, medium density, medium porosity, and shoulder length so it air dries in like one hour. I originally was diffusing it like everyone else, but I kept getting frizz and one night it was late so I just did all my products and styling and let it air dry before scrunching out the crunch with some hair oil and OMG it was so shiny and not frizzy at all!! AND I has even better second day hair than I ever had before after sleeping in my bonnet and silk pillow case. I think that's gonna be my new go to for sure. I love taking evening showers anyways so it kinda works out lol.

Your first point triggered me in rewatching all of your co-wash videos, haha!! (That's how I found your channel 4 years ago #memorylane You have saved my hair ♥♥♥ Thank you!!!! ) I know you said cowashing wasn't for you, I'm one of those people for whom washing frequently actually makes my scalp produce more sebum. I don't have oily skin naturally. But I have been skipping co wash and my hair is getting now greasier quickly again, so now I'm going to cowash again! But I still clarify every 4-6 weeks.

I feel like the wavy/curly issue is like a different way women size eachother up and down. It’s not ok to tell someone they’re skinny or overweight. Yet in the 20 years I did hair, I’d have soo many clients be condescending about waves. So much so, that I personally rarely EVER did my hair wavy, because of it!! It’s real. And it’s stupid tbh, that a lot of women compare their hair to others, to feel better about their own. I cannot imagine how many ridiculous comments you’ve endured over this. Thank you for having your content!! It’s helping me figure out how to accept and work with my own waves now, instead of forcing it to be ‘extra curly’ or forcing it to be straight ❤

That I have curls, with a majority of waves, is something I've NEVER had, so I'm thrilled to see them! I lived in TX most of my life, where big hair is a thing (still is, but now I live in Oregon). I used every product under the sun (including Aquanet purple and backcombing) to get that big hair and because my hair was so baby fine, it didn't hold for more than an hour or two at best. After it all failed, I looked like a wet rat. So, ANY volume I get from waves or curls is welcome. That only happened after menopause. My brother went kinky curly at puberty and I always felt slighted. But now? Once my hair is longer, I'll be able to finger curl! In the interim, I'm good with where my hair is on any given day because I have more volume that I have ever had! Volume is a HUGE deal for anyone who has always had baby fine hair. You can style the crap out of it with the strongest hold products (Loreal, for a very short time in the mid to late 80's, had a spray that would literally survive a hurricane. I was so sad when they stopped making it, just as I was sad that they stopped producing color enhancing mousse that had a bit of shimmer). Now, in my mid 50's I don't really care. I just let my hair do what it's going to do and embrace it. That's what age does. You learn that what was important to you in your teens and 20's isn't important now.

This is kind of off topic but in your last video you mentioned not using a hair towel. I thought using a hair towel was the best for curly hair as it gets the water out fast which prevents the curls from weighing done or the protein in our hair from breaking? My hair actually curls better when it's more on the dry side, especially my silver. I used Wella for a month and it did very well when I alternated washes with the regular curly shampoo and the cleansing conditioner. I haven't been brave enough to use the mask yet. I'm going to predict it's going to take all of the curls out of my hair (my hair is baby fine and dense). Now, my hair is still short as I'm growing it out, so it's in the totally annoying phase. I've switched to kinky curly. So many more waves, but that conditioner tends to weigh my hair down when I use it as a partial leave-in, meaning I only washed it out half way this last time. To that, it's totally silky and healthy. You'd think that the kinky curly line would be too harsh for baby fine, dense, short hair, but it isn't. That was a surprise. I'm sure I'll figure out the condition eventually, probably when my hair is longer so that I can condition only the ends and actually brush or finger style it properly. For now, it's still too short for either. But I will say that I've gotten an extra 2 days out of a wash using the clarifying shampoo, even when completely rinsing out the conditioner, using an anti-frizz foam, and using the curling gel before diffusing. I need more volume at my roots and firmer hold. Thinking of trying the Dippity Do now that I know it's still being produced!

I guess I'm one of the only people who's worst abuse to my hair was a poor conditioning habit (until the last few years)? I pretty much have just let my hair do what it wants and lived in buns, braids, and ponytails. I wacked off 18" about 8yrs ago when I started college and discovered I would get ringlets when I washed that would quickly go away as soon as I so much as ran my hands through it. I just did another "wack" (my hair is still mid spine but for me it is short) and decided to try encouraging the wavy/curly to stay. Leave in conditioner is the secret to the softest hair imaginable I completely forgot once my mom started letting me brush my own hair as a child. One use and even if my curls are soso the texture is 100% worth the extra step

I want to add my two cents worth😂. My hair ranges from 2b to 3b, so it's wavy-curly. I have people with looser curl patterns tell me it's not wavy, then I have people with tighter curl patterns tell me it's not curly. I find the ones with tighter curl patterns to be quite rude about it, in general. The majority of my hair is 3a-3b, not 2b-2c. Several hairstylists have told me it's curly, not wavy. Not 1 hairstylist has said it's wavy. I'm not sure why all the gatekeeping is necessary. But everyone thinks they're some kind of expert, when they are clearly not. So I try to blow them off. I can't imagine what it's like to have a platform that reaches thousands upon thousands of people. The comments must be exhausting. I started watching Courtney's videos in late 2019 or early 2020. I started using her methods and advice and have never looked back. I've tweaked my routine for my own personal hair but I'm a firm believer that Courtney's methods work for a wide variety of hair types and textures. I love you, Courtney! How fast your hair absorbs water and products, or how long it takes water and products to penetrate within; and how long it takes hair to dry. ❤

I never say that I cowash. If my hair needs washed, I use shampoo. The rest of the time, when I wet my hair to restyle, I only use conditioner but that is for moisture, not washing. The whole curly girl world is so funny.

Realizing you can't make wavy hair curly because it will just fall out after a few hours. Realizing you can't make wavy hair straight because it isn't. Embracing the wave you actually have because if you do, it will stay in all week with no effort.

You also use way too much shampoo. All you need is a couple of dime-sized plops, one for the front and sides, and one for the nape and bottom sides, meeting at the crown. As you seem to know, shampoo only needs to be applied to the scalp, and that suds aren't necessary to clean your hair. I've seen that you wash properly, only at the scalp, so if the scalp is really the only thing that needs cleaning while the rest of the hair will be cleaned by default in that the soap will work it's way down (or you can work it down), why do you use so much shampoo? Now, I have a hard time watching Brad Mondo. In one of his videos, he suggested that simply rinsing your hair in warm water will clean it. I beg to differ on the simple principle that water and oil don't mix. There is absolutely NO way you can clean an oily scalp with just water, much less remove the oil in products. To that, I have had seborrhic dermatitis on my scalp for decades. After using the Kinky Curly clarifying shampoo, it's completely GONE. This makes me think ... HOW many years have I used bad shampoo?

Your hair is beautiful. Embrace it. Seriously, who cares what other people think, do, or say. Naysayers, backyard (or should I say bathroom) experts, and know-it-alls are put on earth to annoy us. Don’t let them.
