Finlands public opinion change to a pro-NATO stance was critical for Swedens decision to join NATO. Remember, todays Finland was the eastern part of Sweden for almost 700 years, & the partition of the nation wasn't voluntary..🧐 The ties between Sweden & Finland still run extremely deep..
@sampohonkala41958 ай бұрын
It is weird in a way; if the Finnish military was to co-operate with some foreign ally, it would still be mentally a rather complicated issue with trust an expectations. Finland and Sweden were separated in 1809, but the attitude in the battlefield would still be 'we have already been in this together before'.
@RandomerFellow8 ай бұрын
Now we didn't get to vote on this in Sweden, which feels a little uncomfortable. But, as a Swede, I have always felt that the Finns are the closest of the neighboring countries to me and their membership would have weighed heavily for a yes.
@benktlofgren47108 ай бұрын
@@RandomerFellow there was no need for a vote as the masses was for NATO, if it was more undecided a vote would probably been necessary.
@peabase8 ай бұрын
Indeed, the separation of Finland from Sweden wasn't voluntary, but when the deed was done, Finland didn't exactly volunteer to rejoin either. Marshall Bernadotte, the future king of Sweden, had the presence of mind not to pursue the matter any further.
@bjornpalmqvist37808 ай бұрын
I think it was very fortunate that Sweden and Finland was split in 1809 before modern nationalism really kicked off. If the Finns would have had to struggle for independence against 19-th century Sweden, we might not have had the great relations we have today. Hopefully Sweden would have let Finland get independence without conflict as happened with Norway, but that was only a personal union. Finland was part of the country...

@kentnilsson4658 ай бұрын
Some comments 1/ Sweden brings a very large military industrial capability into NATO that is important 2/ Sweden has a very good and extensive military intelligence capability 3/ Taking Gotland is one thing, keeping it is another. Sweden by itself would have no problem destroying any supplies by air or sea going to the island 4/ The law changes, when it comes to Turkey, were already decided before the NATO process. What the Swedes have had a problem is the perception of the process, especially when it comes to Turkey

Finland has an air base in the far North, from there it's like 1 hour flight to Kola paninsula where Russias arctic fleet / nuclear subs are stationed. Other NATO fighter jets have already practiced landing there. Also, the connection from St. Petersburg to there (train + road) stretches those 1200 km, never very far from Finlands border. So Finland/NATO could cut that link anywhere on those 1200 km. Strategically, I think that must feel like a nightmare for Russia.

Bravo!!! An interview where not once they used the word (Swedish) "neutrality" but rather used the correct wording "militarily non-align" as Sweden never was “neutral”. Instead, it had a "neutrality policy" trying to convince the leaders of the Warsaw Pact (especially Soviet Union) and NATO at the time that Sweden would declare itself neutral should those two-block go to war with each other. So compared to e.g. Switzerland, which got a legal and constitutional based neutrality as laid down in the Congress of Vienna 1815 (where Sweden was one of the European powers deciding on those obligations for Switzerland) Sweden haven’t got and never had such constitutional and legal “neutrality”. Instead, its “neutrality policy” was purely a political decision of the parliament which had implications for the Swedish defence and obligations according to international law. Should either NATO or the Warsaw Pact or both have decided to ignore the Swedish declaration of neutrality then that one would have fallen flat, and Sweden would then have been party to the conflict (which would have been the most likely scenario looking at its geography in any case). Therefore, Sweden and the US prepared for that during the Cold War (in secret though well known in Mosco), especially in terms of the co-operation between the US and Swedish Air Forces. All references to any “neutrality policies” politically and in e.g. Swedish security strategies, documents, decisions and policies were removed as soon as Sweden became a member of the EU 1995. Since then Sweden became more of a NATO-member in action and preparations, than most NATO members themselves. One very important outcome from the lack of military hardware available in the 1930s in Europe when Hitler built up its war machine and started WWII, coupled with the Swedish non-military-alignment with the sole purpose to declare itself neutral as per the above was the fact that Sweden built up its own Defence Industry, which today is, considering the size of the country, large and in many areas world leading. This was not mentioned in the interview as also a huge benefit for both NATO and the EU strategically.

I also noted some factual errors.. First of all, Finland and Sweden agreed BEFORE applying TOGETHER to NATO, not as the lady stated, "Finland decided to join which put Sweden in an awkward position." Second, why Sweden joined is not as much Sweden's need for protection bit rather to reduce the risk of Russian invasion of the Baltics, which likely would pull Sweden in to the war anyway, by vastly increasing NATOs position to protect and reinforce the Baltics, thereby lessening the risk of war. There, fixed it for you 😉

It is a win-win for Sweden. Like always. Without any real significant army(ground forces/cannon fodder)but more like a group of well-equipped boutique units with guaranteed ethnic-and gender diversity to show about and do 'marketing' Sverige around the 'Western Community" without any real risk(geological)of going into front lines and comming back with body bags is a safe bet and adds to Sweden's reputation value for sure.. Sweden's already wealthy military industry gets new orders from other nations' tax payers' pockets and even the Nato-demanded 2% out of the GDP goes straight into domestic weapons industry like the BAE/Saab from Swedish net tax payers' pockets. Located nicely behind Finland, the Baltics and the sea it is very convenient to post and flex muscles especially when it brings gold to the Bank.. The game Swedish elites have played for about 200 years now since the old, blue-blooded nobilities still own the bulk of the Swedish industry and therefore it always pays in their pockets like always.. ;D

Classic mistake only looking at the army. The airforce and navy is where the budget goes. The standing army is to hold the north or hunt down any invaders unfortunate enough to make it to the mainland. It's ment to be elite by design with 100 000 screened every year, 8000 picked and the best get job offers after training. We have concription to get reservists when needed not a standing force of "not so gooders" to eat up money and polish employment numbers.
