Swedish bagpipes: Polska efter Nedergårds Lars

Polska after Nedergårds Lars, on Swedish bagpipes.
Nedergårds Lars Olsson (1813-1895), called "Björskötten" (the bear hunter), is perhaps the most legendary of the 19th century bagpipers in Sweden. This is a polska after him. (A polska is a traditional Swedish 3-beat dance, similary to the mazurka or polonaise)

Thanks, I think there should be more säckpipa players in Minnesota, though. I gave courses there in 2011. Yes, I know, it's 12 years ago, but I would have hoped someone remains ...

Hi allisonforfornsed! By the "scottish bagpipe" I suppose you mean the Great Highland Bagpipes (GHB) - mouth-blown pipes in Bb with 3 drones over the piper's shoulder, not Scottish border pipes, which are smaller, mouth- or bellows-blown pipes a bit like Swedish bagpipes, and which share their origin with Northumbrian pipes. The GHB was developed for playing outdoors - it's a band instrument really, nowadays, and much louder than the smaller pipes mentioned above (mostly in A, G or D). Its chanter and drones have a wider bore diameter, so more air goes through them. It is literally more effort to play the GHB than these pipes, but then the sound is perhaps twice as loud as my own scottish smallpipes in D, for example. But they all work in the same way basically! So I'm not sure I agree with "efficient" - effort in = noise out.
