During the reprise of Johana, if you listen closely to Todd's lyrics, he goes on to say that he'll miss Johanna less and less as every day goes by. He also earlier mentioned that he thinks he'll never see her again. So, he just let himself be consumed by his hatred for Turpin, to the point that she was unrecognizable to him.

an amazing detail someone pointed out to me is that people in this movie bleed from the neck differently depending on if Sweeney Todd considers them "Alive" or not. his victims either spray blood everywhere or it runs down their neck mildly depending on what he thinks of them. Turpin was his MAIN target, so he gushed like a geyser and splattered all over the walls, but the random dudes he didn't care about sometimes just dribbled. importantly, Lucy and Sweeney himself both got the "runny" blood because Sweeney thought Lucy was dead the whole time, and Benjamin Barker is also long dead in his mind

Funny thing you mentioned Johanna possibly not being into Anthony. It's somewhat implied in a song that was deleted for time in the film that she is just desperately using Anthony to get away from her creepy abusive guardian and doesn't actually love him. Also the stage musical has a giant loud steam whistle that would sound off whenever Todd would commit murders as a kind of jumpscare for the audience.

I once had a conversation with someone who doesnt watch musicals like at all and they said to me "I just dont like how cheery they are and how theres always a perfect ending" and man the face they made when I explained how almost every really good musical has at least one death in it. I mean this is the prime example but then you have ones like Little Shop of Horrors, Les Miserables, Chicago, and Heathers have high body counts but even musicals you'd think would be death free like Into the Woods, West Side Story, even the comedy musical Urinetown that most people dont know about. The ones that dont have at least one person getting got tend to be family musicals (Heck, even sometimes those arent exceptions cus lets be real even Disney musicals tend to count since they tend to axe the villains pretty brutally in the final acts but its okay cus theyre evil I guess?)

Story I saw about the making of this film: Tim Burton, her bf at the time and baby daddy, hated musicals. Helena liked musicals and even got her son into them. Controversially but hopefully jokingly, she said that Tim Burton thought their son was going to end up gay because of her showing him Judy Garland and what not. So I wonder to this day if she convinced Tim to do this musical movie. Also, there's a scene of her struggling to sing cuz there's no space for air between her lines. She could sing, but was not a well off professional either. Love her though!

The 1982 pro-shot in my opinion is the best version of the musical you can find to watch because obviously Sweeney Todd was originally a stage show by theater legend Stephen Sondheim, movies often don't live up to the original source material, and it's got actual musical theater performers singing. I adore the actors here but Tim Burton kind of changed the tone of the musical to fit his signature gloomy atmosphere. I know the story is bleak but in the original stage show, the comedy is highlighted despite the dark themes and that's what a lot of fans love about the musical, because it has the audacity to be vibrant and fun when it's literally about "popping people into pies." Really hope you guys or at least some people who stumble into this comment check out the 1982 version, I strongly recommend it if you're into getting other character interpretations other than the movie version (not that it's necessarily wrong but again - not my personal favorite), it's a recording of the stage show with Angela Lansbury (voice actor for Mrs. Potts from Disney's Beauty and the beast, for those who aren't familiar) as Mrs. Lovett. There were also songs cut from the original soundtrack, as musical movies often do, so yeah, give it a go!

It still blows my mind a little that folks in the US haven't had a meat pie. They're so ubiquitous where I live, they're like, a typical snack you can pick up in any little corner store. (Or they used to be, they're much more expensive now than they were, which is sad.) Point is, they're also easy as, well, pie, to make, you basically make a beef stew, using either cubed meat or minced meat (minced is easier/cheaper but obviously the texture is different) with a thick rich gravy, then put it in savory pie cases. (Important step: cool the filling down completely before putting it in the pies or the pastry will go soggy and fall apart during cooking) You put the cold filling into shortcrust pastry shells (you can use oversized muffin pans to make mini pies, or make larger pies in a pie tin) and then top each one with flaky puff pastry (flaky is too soft to use for the shell). Seal the lids, poke a few holes in each one so steam can escape, brush with egg-wash, and bake until the pastry is cooked and the filling is hot. Boom, meat pies. (That^ sort of pie is more the sort you find typically in NZ and Australia, but it's not the same sort as you see them eating here, those look like more traditional British pies, which are made with a hot water pastry crust, and cooked all at once with raw filling. The pastry is much denser and can withstand the longer cooking time necessary for the meat to be ready. They're in the same family as traditional Cornish pastries and are often eaten cold, since they travel well for things like a picnic lunch. Obviously they're eating them hot here though.) Here endeth a completely unasked for ramble about pies. Poor Americans, don't know what they're missing 😆 And now I'm going to go and eat a pie for lunch because I have one in the freezer. (contains 0% priest)

Up there as one of the best film adaptations of a musical in my eyes. It knows exactly how to translate the story from stage to screen. Trimming down or removing songs, giving subtle performances in places that the camera can focus on. The only other film musical I love that comes close is Matilda the Musical. That's one that so many seem to forget about. (Partly because many thought it was a remake of the American film, which it wasn't)

I saw this on Broadway in the early 1980's. The original Sweeney Todd (Len Cariou) and Mrs. Lovett (Angela Lansbury) has already left, but the performers who stepped into the roles (George Hearn & Dorothy Loudon) were excellent. The stage setting was an ironworks, so you had this huge skeletal building with a factory whistle. A very, very, VERY loud factory whistle. The thing was that you never knew when it would go off, which naturally made the audience jump in their chairs. When I saw the show, my seat was in the first row on the second-floor balcony. The first time the whistle went off, I nearly went over the rail. 😱😆

I love this movie and I don't care if it is a musical. omg, I am just realizing the young kid wanting to free the girl is in Stranger Things. Not saying who because I don't think they reacted to it on the channel yet. Depp actually shaved Rickman's face and he didn't train or anything. He was actually terrified during the scene and filming this movie put him offer getting a straight shave for quite a while. The dude plays the henchman character in so many movies. Peter Pettigrew dude plays that type of side character in the The Princess and the Frog, Enchanted and sorta in The Last Samurai, but not a jerk. If you want really early Depp and Leo D, check out What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Speaking of eating people, Society of the Snow is based on a real event of survival. Two reason he didn't kill that one guy, yes people were with him, but it was a wife and a daughter, so it mirrors what he had.

Something to note about most not all actors that have gained any form of Fame, they were all Drama Nerds. They all had to become multifaceted actors and talents. That's why most of the famous ones know how to do singing, dancing and acting. To become famous on the stage, you must be a triple threat, and that's where the term comes from the triple threat. To be a powerhouse on the Silver screen, you can do one thing really really well and gain renown for it but you will become typecast and eventually it becomes tiresome, when you saw an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie you knew what you were going to get. Not much in the way of humor, although a little, never any singing, and no dancing. But probably a nuke and maybe a gun or five. But now you take powerhouses like Gerald Butler, you don't know what you're going to get. The difference between Les Miserables and Gladiator or how to train your Dragon. There are actors that we will never forget because of their versatility. Here's something. Just food for thought, if Carl Urban pulls off Johnny Cage in the next mortal Kombat movie, I will be convinced that he could win best actor in anything. So far he is the most versatile actor I have ever seen. If I find out that he knows how to sing and dance then everybody else is playing for second place. Cheers gov'na -Alpharious-

If you fellows are in the mood for more musicals, I highly recommend the Starkid productions, they’re here on KZbin for free, and at the top of the list is their Aladdin parody, Twisted.

On the note of "This sounds like a Disney movie", I still hold that "Nothin's Gonna Harm You" has the same initial chord progression as "Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?" Also, Carter was *pissed* when she realized what "Grade School" actually meant.

I hope everyone is as lucky to have friends like you guys to watch movies with. I'm convinced it doesn't matter what movie it is - I'll have a great time watching it. Thank you for the entertaining content.
